STARCRAFT

PROJECT #232
CLASSIFICATION:
REPAINT
BASE FIGURE: HEROES OF CYBERTRON STARSCREAM (OTFCC REPAINT)
MATERIALS USED: ACRYLIC PAINTS, HOBBY KNIFE
FIRST APPEARANCE: "MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE" PART 3

"Decepticons, it is time to return to Cybertron and conquer the Autobots forever!"

Preamble: Starcraft's a generic character I never even noticed until I finally got around to picking up the first season of Transformers on DVD.  You can't really see him if you watch the episode on your TV set; I didn't spot him until I was watching the episode through the DVD-ROM on my computer.  In any event, he's got one of the more distinctive paint schemes of the background Decepticon characters (not just a color-swap based on Thundercracker), but what's really unique about him is that he doesn't have any air intakes on his shoulders, and he's missing his back-mounted jet wings, both of which are very atypical.  (It's quite possible that he's still got these components and just doesn't use them in robot mode.  We've seen in "Megatron's Master Plan" that Starscream can retract his wings and air intakes when he dons his Optimus Prime costume, so it stands to reason the others can do this, too.)  Needless to say, his bizarre design captured my attention, and I quickly set about painting a figurine into his likeness.

Construction: Using a sharp X-Acto knife, I managed to chop off the air intakes and wings pretty cleanly.  On this figure, the wings are actually attached to two components on his back, but without seeing any reason for them to be removable, I glued those parts in place.  (Unfortunately, the lack of wings really strongly emphasizes just how oversized his weapons are, which is unfortunate since they were actually drawn pretty small in his screen appearance.  Oh, well.)  It looks to me like the animators used Reflector's particular shade of purple when coloring this character, so I tried to match that color for Starcraft.

Comments: The name, incidentally, is sort of a double meaning.  I decided that this was the guy who oversaw the assembly of the Decepticons' second space cruiser on Earth (in other words, spacecrafts are his craft).  It also occured to me that if he doesn't actually have air intakes or wings at all, then his vehicle mode must be pretty damn bizarre.  I rationalized this by saying that he actually turns into a modified jet that's better suited to functioning in space.  I envision it as having a similar function as the alternate spacefaring form that Cyclonus can adopt, as detailed in his TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE profile (which, in turn, is a reference to the fact that the wings on the Hasbro toy are detachable).

STARCRAFT
FUNCTION: FLIGHT ENGINEER

"Flight transcends all things, even war."

STARCRAFT has his head in the clouds...introspective, intelligent, but incapable of remaining on task for any length of time without supervision.  Designed and supervised construction of Decepticon space cruiser.  Modified jet mode capable of high speeds, but lacks maneuverability in Earth atmosphere.  Carries payload of explosive electro bombs.  Arm-mounted energo-guns emit charged packets of concentrated energy.  Prone to daydreaming.

I think Starcraft is also the name of a TSR role-playing game.
Shh, don't tell.
