FIRST APPEARANCE: "DIVIDE AND CONQUER" (G1)
"Everything is going according to my plan. The
Autobots are without their mighty leader, and four of their number have been
vanquished on Cybertron."
Preamble: Ugh. Yellow looks really
bad on characters who aren't named Bumblebee or Cheetor or Hot Shot. It
looks particularly bad on a Decepticon, since yellow is such a bright,
cheery color that I don't typically associate with diabolical death machines.
(Yeah, I know some of you are already composing this huge mental tally
of all the yellow characters that I haven't mentioned here, and that my argument
has somehow been rendered null and void because I've forgotten to account
for Sinnertwin or the G2 Constructicons. You know what? That's
not the point. Let's move on.)
Anyway, Goldwing here was among the unnamed
Decepticons on Cybertron who attempted to bathe a party of visiting Autobots
in acid rain. Like his partners,
Blue Moon and
Limelight, Goldwing transformed
into a Cybertronic jet mode, but his robot mode remains identical in design
to Starscream and friends, making the PVC sculpt ideal for repaints into
a veritable multitude of generic characters.
(Random trivia: The animators cheated a
bit and photocopied the animation cels so they wouldn't have to draw the
same transformation sequence three times over. That's why the outlines
around the characters are so thick in the scene shown below. The same
photocopy process was used in the original 101 Dalmatians film.)
Construction: Originally, I used
a fluorescent yellow paint for Goldwing, but that ended up being just slightly
too brilliant a look for the character, so I ended up painting over that
with basic, straight-out-of-the-bottle yellow.
Comments: Somehow, I think it's ultimately
immaterial how effective this guy is at spraying acid rain all over his foes.
One direct look at his paint scheme should be enough to send most enemies
running. Well, unless they've been sufficiently acclimated to looking
at Bumblebee, I suppose.
GOLDWING
FUNCTION: TROOP SUPPORT
"Leave the thinking to others and you will
never go wrong."
GOLDWING is cowardly, insecure, nervous,
and indecisive. He best functions in a group because he's incapable
of making decisions on his own. In robot and jet mode, sprays scalding
hot acid showers in a wide-yield burst...armor is highly heat-resistant.
Possesses immense strength. Effective warrior with backup, but
useless when isolated. Lack of courage easily exploited.
