ELEGY
CLASSIFICATION: REPAINT "Prepare, Autobots, to die in darkness!" Preamble: Elegy here is yet another one of those animation mistakes from "Five Faces of Darkness," in this case, a duplicate Cyclonus that was colored like Dirge. Rather than simply dismiss him as a blooper, though, I've chosen to validate by naming him and christening him a new character. (I picture him as one of the Elite Sweeps, specialized warriors under Cyclonus' command who have distinguished themselves in battle, and are rewarded with unique color schemes of their own.) Unlike a number of background characters who only appear in a single scene, Elegy shows up at least a couple of times. He's plainly visible in robot mode as the spaceborne Decepticons begin their assault on Cybertron, but you can also spot him a second time, in jet mode, engaging the Autobot troops on the planet. Construction: Strictly speaking, this sculpt is the Japanese version of Cyclonus, which has slightly pointier wings and helmet prongs (they were rounded off on the Heroes of Cybertron sculpt, following the very logical reasoning that all that rubbery, flexible polyvinyl chloride might really do some damage). Rather than simply follow Heroes of Cybertron Dirge's paint scheme, which is badly inaccurate, I devised a color model for Elegy based on his brief appearance in the episode. Comments: There are actually a lot of generic Decepticons who share Cyclonus' design, most of which appear in "Five Faces of Darkness" part 5. There are plenty of them whose colors are identical to those of Cyclonus, but there are also troopers colored like Motormaster, Breakdown, Swindle, Wildrider... it would take a long time to get to them all. (Clearly, Elegy is one of the most important among them, though, given that he fights by Cyclonus' side. He never got a Hasbro toy, but I suspect that if he did, it would have looked something like this. And yes, I am well aware that all this wild speculation about generic background characters is pretty ridiculous. You enjoy Transformers in your way; I'll enjoy it in mine.)
"It is better to die in battle than to rust in peace."
Lieutenant commander of the armada led
by CYCLONUS...most experienced and trustworthy of the Decepticon elite guard.
Pensive, brutal...follows orders, but longs for more power. Can
establish a remote link with the Sweeps to monitor them and better coordinate
Decepticon assaults. Armed with anti-energon grenade launcher that
disrupts flow of Autobot power supply.

You might say that Elegy feels a lot of emptiness inside.
