"A fresh coat of paint, and it'll be as good as new."--Rattrap, "The Low Road" (BW)
There's really not much to say about these individually; the
pictures speak for themselves. For years, I've had a few tiny plastic
animals lying around --which, upon reflection in 1996 or so, made excellent
mini-Beasts. It never really occurred to me to paint them until recently;
after I made the decision, it was just a matter of finding the characters
I needed to complete my collection of first-season characters. (I didn't
even want to get into the Fuzors and Transmetals. That would require
a lot of sculpting...)
There were a few characters I had to fudge a bit, actually. The T. rex I used for Megatron (actually a Jurassic Park Galoob thingy) was originally mounted on a plastic stand that looked really goofy when next to the others, so I had to carve that off. Airazor (who was one of the crows that came with my Spider and the Scarecrow figure set) had plastic in between her legs (no jokes, people) that had to be likewise removed. As for Rattrap... well, Rattrap is a heavily doctored Roo from a Winnie-the-Pooh figurine set, with the tail from a "Mouse Trap" board game playing piece. Don't even ask me where the other ones came from... I've had some of them for so long I simply don't know. These guys are comparatively tiny--averaging about 2" long.
Painting them was simple enough--if not time-consuming. After
giving them each a primer base coat, I went about trying to match their colors
as closely as possible to their TV show incarnations. (I was just going
to paint them like the toys, but... the toy color schemes are pretty
crappy when it comes right down to it.) So, I popped in my BW first-season
tapes and sat in front of the tube while I painted. I discovered that
in order to get the proper colors, all I had to do (for the most part) was
start with the color of the toy, then add grey. Mainframe apparently
wanted their Beasties' flesh-tones to look more realistic, and mixing them
with grey was the way to achieve that. Out of this lot, I think Tigatron
and Tarantulas turned out the best. For some reason Waspinator is missing
part of his antenna... I could have sworn he had both of them before I painted
him... And perhaps strangest of all, this tiny plastic Cheetor hates
pie.
Here's what I learned from this little endeavour:
And that's it, folks. I have a much larger velociraptor figure that I think I'll turn into Dinobot at some point down the road...
