Chapter 16
Dark Reflection: Chapter 16: Shattered Mirror Part 2
A young man burst into the single remaining building in Garnet Town, where the injured had been moved after the explosions. Nurse Joy immediately recognized him as Nathan, an eleven-year old pokémon trainer from Amethyst Town that had joined the Dragons just before they had all been captured by Giovanni and then rescued by Destiny. "Nurse Joy, you've got to come see this!"
Following the boy out of the makeshift hospital, Nurse Joy found that huge dark clouds were rolling in the distance, surging with dark lightning. In all her years of being a pokémon nurse, she had never seen anything like that. "I wonder what it could possibly be?"
Nathan shook his head, "I don't know, but that just started a couple minutes ago. It seems like it's getting farther away. I think it's going north."
"It must be some new weapon created by Giovanni," Joy said, watching the fading clouds. Squinting into the distance, she noticed something else, this time coming towards them. "Do you see that little light coming this way?"
"No, I don't see any-- Wait a second... Yeah, I do!" Nathan pointed at the quickly approaching lights. Soon they came close enough that the two watchers could make out details. "Hey, that's Destiny!" Nathan exclaimed, suddenly recognizing one of the multiple people and pokémon flying toward them at high speed. "And that looks like Sani beside her!" The trainer suddenly gasped, "Mewtwo's there too!"
"Destiny said that he was really on our side," Joy reminded him. "To tell the truth, I didn't believe her until now."
By the time she had finished saying that, Destiny and the others with her were landing in front of them. "Nurse Joy, this place is a mess!" Destiny observed, looking around. "What happened?"
"We were sabotaged by Connolly." Joy explained. "He hid explosives in all the buildings, then detonated them before he left. We lost most of our forces when that happened. You'll be happy to hear that Greg's still around, but Major Marlow didn't survive, and it doesn't look like Officer Jenny is going to make it either."
"She'll be fine," Destiny assured her. "Won't she, Celebi?" At that, Destiny turned to a small pokémon at her side.
The little fairy nodded, "Of course she will, as will the rest of your wounded. Please, show me where they are."
Soon, a small army of Resistance fighters was being carried through the air by Sani's psychic powers. "I still don't understand, though," Greg called to Destiny, who was flying beside him. "Without our pokémon, how can we possibly hope to defeat the Rockets?"
"I have a feeling that the Rockets are going to be a bit preoccupied, actually. Besides, Zeth and I have pokémon, and then there's also Sani, Mewtwo, and Celebi."
From the front of the flying group, Officer Jenny, now totally healed, called back, "Look at the city!" Glancing down at Jade City far below, Destiny realized what had captured Jenny's attention. The former Rocket base now had an entirely new appearance, a menacing fortress with pointed black towers. Spikes jutted out of the tops of the four walls that now surrounded the base.
"Looks like Belkor's done some remodeling," Destiny called back. "He only had an hour or so to do that too!"
"He has tremendous power," Celebi reminded her.
"No kidding!" Zeth exclaimed, staring at the black fortress as they got closer to it. "I have a feeling that we're in for the fight of our lives!"
As they passed over the walls and landed in a dark courtyard, Celebi floated in front of all that had come. "Everyone, pay attention. No matter what, leave Belkor to me. It would be suicide for any of you to attempt to fight him. He is far too strong. It is almost certain that he already has people under his control. If so, you must defeat them."
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Greg asked. "Let's go!"
The group rushed up to the fortress doors and pulled them open. Charging into a shadowy hall, they were surprised to find only a single Rocket guard. Before the Rocket could grab a pokéball from his belt, Sani immobilized him with a Thunder Wave attack.
"I should have you teach that to my Jolteon," Zeth told the Mew as they hurried to the other end of the room. There were three doors at the far end of the hall, leading left, right, and straight down the center of the fortress.
Celebi pointed at the middle door. "That would be the most direct route to Belkor, but the other two doors loop around the sides of the fortress and meet up in Belkor's chamber. We should split into three groups and have each group take a different path."
"Are you sure that the other two passageways will meet up with the middle one again?" Destiny asked the fairy.
"Yes, I am." The Celebi smiled. "It seems Belkor likes this fortress. It's just about an exact replica of the one he had before I defeated him the first time."
"I guess he's not that creative."
The Celebi pulled open the middle door, which led to a long narrow hall, lined with terrifying black sculptures depicting different pokémon in savage poses. "Hmm... Well, maybe he is. Those statues are new."
Destiny shrugged, "I wouldn't call that creativity, just barbaric insanity." Turning, she addressed the Dragons, "All right. Everyone get into three groups. Zeth, Greg, you lead one group down the left hall. Sani, Jenny, you take the right. Celebi and I will go down the middle."
"I'll go with Zeth," Mewtwo decided. "Perhaps I can help him out as he helped me."
Once the Dragons had split up, Destiny led her group through the door. Once through, however, the door slammed shut and seemed to fuse into the wall. A Dragon tried to open it, but had no success. "I guess Belkor doesn't want us to leave," Destiny observed. "Come on, we might as well keep going."
The other groups had the same thing happen to them. As Zeth and Greg worked their way through the fortress, they found that the doors all sealed behind them. "You know, I feel like we're walking into a trap," Zeth said to Greg, as they entered a large arena-like room.
That was when the first wave of Rockets attacked. Five guards ran in, all throwing down pokéballs. Mewtwo teleported in front of Zeth, who grabbed his own pokéballs. While he did that, Mewtwo covered him with a Shadow Ball attack that bowled over the nearest pokémon, an Electabuzz. A moment later, all six of Zeth's pokémon joined the fray, quickly overpowering the Rockets' outnumbered pokémon.
Then three more Rockets somehow came from behind. One of them released an Alakazam that started to wreak havoc among Zeth's pokémon. The Dragons managed to subdue the other two Rockets and their pokémon in the meantime. As Zeth's Beedrill fell to the rampaging Alakazam, Mewtwo darted across the room and slammed into the other psychic. The Alakazam spun around, blasting Mewtwo with a Psychic attack that sent Mewtwo tumbling. The clone jumped back to his feet and attacked again, this time using his own psychic power.
The Alakazam fell on its rear, as if it had been punched in the gut by an invisible fist. It seemed like it had been hit hard, but a moment later, it shot a powerful Psybeam at Mewtwo. The clone tried to counter it, but the beam smashed right through his defensive bubble and threw him backwards into the wall. The Alakazam would have finished Mewtwo off right there, but Zeth's Shellder stopped it with an Ice Beam. Covered with frost, the psychic pokémon fell unconscious.
Propping himself up on one arm, Mewtwo glanced around, and found that the remainder of the Rockets had already been defeated. Zeth walked over to him and offered him a hand to help him up. "Are you okay?"
Mewtwo shook his head, "I don't know. Yesterday, I could have flung that Alakazam right out of Jade City; but with my powers reduced now, I was almost defeated."
"Hey, welcome to the real world."
Mewtwo looked up at Zeth for a moment, then smiled and took Zeth's hand, "You're right..." Zeth helped the clone to his feet, and Mewtwo paused for a moment. "I've never been normal before. I suppose that it will take some getting used to."
"That's life for you," Zeth replied. "All you can do is make the best of things and hope that it will be enough."
Sani's team was also attacked by the Rockets, but with the Mew's strength, all the enemies were quickly overcome. Not bothering to tie up the unconscious Rockets, the group continued on.
Jenny pointed at something farther down the corridor. "Sani, look there."
The Mew spotted the single Rocket that Jenny was referring to. "I see him." She flew towards him, intending to defeat him and any pokémon he might have, but the moment the Rocket saw her, he screamed in terror and ran. Not wanting him to warn his comrades that they were coming, Sani teleported in front of him, blocking his way. Still screaming, he swing wildly at her, forcing her to quickly grab his arms in a psychic grip.
"No!" he shouted. "Don't do it to me! I'll do anything you want, but don't do it!"
"What are you talking about?" Sani asked, as the prisoner tried to pull free of the grip that held his arms. He didn't respond, just straining harder, so she immobilized the rest of his body. "What do you mean?" she asked again, getting a little irritated at the uncooperative Rocket.
"Please, don't hurt me," he begged her.
"I'm not going to hurt you," she told him, as the Dragons caught up with them. "Not as long as you cooperate." Officer Jenny slipped a pair of handcuffs on the Rocket, then Sani released him. "Now tell me, what's down this hall?"
The Rocket shook his head, staring at her for a moment, "You don't know?"
Sani shot the Rocket a look that suggested she was reevaluating his intelligence. "Of course I don't know. I'm psychic, not omniscient!"
Their prisoner glanced nervously from Sani to the Dragons around him, "Well, uh, there used to only be the pokéball storeroom down that way, but everything's changed now, so I don't know what else is down there. Please, that's all I know. Don't make me like the others!"
Sani glared at the Rocket, "Will you tell me what you're talking about, or do you expect me to read your mind? What others? What's been done to them?"
The Rocket was confused, "You didn't see them? The other Rockets, they're all controlled now. That black monster that looks kinda like you, he's controlling them all. No one's who they used to be!"
"Mind controlled slaves," Jenny realized. "I should have realized it earlier. None of the Rockets that attacked us said anything. No taunts, no orders to their pokémon. They just attacked us like robots or something."
"No wonder this guy's so afraid of me," Sani replied. "Well, under any normal circumstances, I'd have this guy tell us where that pokéball stash was so we can get some of your pokémon back, but for all I know, Belkor has all the pokémon under his control."
"We'll just have to leave them behind for now," Jenny agreed, "Let's hope that we'll still be around to reclaim them once this is all over."
Strangely, Destiny's team of Dragons met with no Rocket resistance at all, although their progress was slowed down in other ways. Every door they came to refused to open for them, so Celebi spent a lot of time blasting them open. Finally, they came to a gloomy candlelit hall, with a huge black metal door at the end. The door had patterns of Mews etched into it, and all the lines glowed with an eerie orange light, as if they were on fire.
Destiny nearly yelped as something landed on her shoulder, then calmed down as she realized that it was Snow. {This place is spooky!} the Pidgey observed.
"Yeah, it is. Where have you been, anyway? I almost forgot you were still around."
{I've been laying low,} Snow told her. {I haven't really been able to do anything to help, so I figured that I'd just stay out of the way.}
"Well, don't feel too bad about that," Destiny told the bird, as she walked up to the huge black door. "You've already helped out a lot. It's just someone else's turn right now." Destiny reached up to the door's handle, just to see if this one would open without Celebi having to knock it down. It did, but not because of her. Before her hand even touched the handle, the door started to open. Destiny jumped back, expecting a trap. However, only one person came through the door.
It was Giovanni. The former Rocket boss now had a blank expression on his face as he walked toward Destiny and the Dragons. He spoke to them, sounding like he was in a trance. "My master does not wish to see you at this time. Go away."
Celebi fluttered up to him, "No, we will not be turned away, Belkor. You will have to face us."
Giovanni was quiet for a moment, then he nodded, "Celebi... This changes things. My master will see you immediately. Come with me." Turning slowly, Giovanni walked back through the door.
Celebi quickly followed him. Waving to the Dragons, Destiny ran after them, "Come on, all of you, let's go see what happens."
They entered a large throne room, as dark and gloomy as most of the other rooms they had seen. "I'm getting tired of this hideous decor," Destiny finally stated.
"But I am not!" Destiny looked up at the throne, which was unoccupied, glancing around, she found Belkor floating by a window. In fact, that was the only window she had seen in the fortress so far. As the Mew turned and the window closed up into a solid wall, she realized why that was. "So, Celebi," Belkor said, floating over to the fairy, "I see that I am not the only one to who has been released. Do you really think that you can possibly beat me again? That first victory was a fluke, and you know it!"
"It doesn't have to be this way," the Celebi replied. "You can still turn from your wicked ways."
Belkor glared at his opponent. "It's always the same with you, isn't it? You're still the same as you were, always trying to fix everything. Well, you can't change everything, Celebi, and I definitely don't want to hear any of your redemption speeches! I have no desire to repent of my ways. I like being the most powerful being on the planet, and I like having others under my control!"
Destiny stepped forward, "Well we don't like to be controlled, Belkor. We have our own lives to lead, and we'd rather live those out then some life of slavery under someone like you!"
"That's right!" From another doorway, Sani and her team had just come in. At the other end of the room, Zeth and his group were also entering. "We'll do everything in our power to resist you," Sani added, "even if we don't have any possible chance to defeat you."
"How very foolish of you," Belkor hovered around, looking at everyone that had come to face him. "You can't resist me. I can make you my puppet, just as I have done with that weak-minded imbecile over there." At that, the Mew pointed to Giovanni, who smiled blankly and nodded.
"Let him go, Belkor," Celebi told the Mew. "He is not yours to control any more."
The black Mew shrugged, "As you wish." Giovanni fell to the ground like a marionette with its strings cut. Belkor waved one hand at him. "Is there anything else you would like me to do for you before I destroy you?"
"I wish it didn't have to come to this, Belkor." Raising one hand, Celebi unleashed a bright white attack that flung the black Mew back into the wall. He jumped back up, and fired off a flurry of glistening black needles at the fairy pokémon.
The rest of the people in the room backed up as the two pokémon battled, a fight unlike any they had ever seen before. Both Belkor and Celebi were using attacks that none of them had ever seen before and none of them would care to experience. A black lightning attack from Belkor missed Celebi and blew a hole in the wall near Zeth's group, who were pummeled by flying debris. A moment later, a brilliant rainbow-colored beam from Celebi smashed into the floor and exploded, almost burning Destiny before Sani blocked the fiery blast.
As the amazing battle continued, it soon became clear that Celebi was having trouble dealing with Belkor. The black Mew was incredibly strong, and it seemed that he was not tiring as quickly as Celebi was. Finally, Belkor smashed Celebi to the ground, then zapped him with his black lightning. "You're no match for me anymore, Celebi!" the Mew taunted. "I have been increasing my power ever since I was released. You are no longer my equal in strength!"
Celebi shot back into the air, "Perhaps not, but strength is not always the most important factor."
"It is for me." Creating a huge ball of black energy, Belkor flung it at Celebi. The fairy dodged, but the dark attack followed him and surrounded him. Once he was trapped inside, the sphere pummeled him with red and yellow rays. "Now it's over!"
"Not yet it isn't!" A barrage of Swift stars bounced off of the black Mew's head as Sani shot towards him. "There's no way we're giving up!"
"No, Sani, don't!" Destiny called. "Remember what he did to Mewtwo and Zeth?"
Belkor glared at Sani, "Your friend is right, you should not have attacked me. A psychic has no chance of standing against me." Lashing out at Sani with his dark attacks, he threw her across the room to land beside Celebi.
Instead of giving up, however, she attacked again, using a Hyper Beam attack. The brilliant orange beam actually tossed Belkor back a short distance. He recovered quickly and hovered around her as she recovered from using the attack. "Not bad, actually. Not nearly as strong as I am, but not bad. Perhaps I won't destroy you utterly after all. You could become my apprentice and learn the dark secrets as I have."
"And then what? Become your queen and help you enslave the world?" Jumping back into the air, Sani knocked Belkor away from her with a Mega Punch. "No thanks!"
The black Mew shook his head, "Then you shall die!" Raising a hand, Belkor surrounded himself with a dark haze, just as he had done before draining Mewtwo of his power.
Destiny ran for her friend, knowing that there was no way she could reach her in time. "Sani, look out!" The black energy lanced out from Belkor and surrounded Sani, as the evil Mew prepared to absorb all her psychic energy.
This time something was different, though. Sani began to glow with a bright white light, which cut through the dark clouds surrounding her, dissipating the attack. "What's she doing?" Zeth called to Destiny. "Is she evolving or something?"
Destiny shook her head, "I have no idea!" Blasting out of the light that surrounded her, Sani plowed into Belkor, throwing him across the room with amazing force. The Mew was no longer the light purple shade she had once been, but was now totally white, as Belkor was totally dark. She released a bright flash of white light that washed over everyone in the room. As the light washed over her, Destiny didn't notice any effects from it. She was just about to ask Sani what that was supposed to do when she realized that Belkor seemed to be badly dazed.
Another wave of light followed, seeming harmless to everyone but the black Mew. Belkor yelped as the light hit him. He fought back with his dark lightning, but the attack had absolutely no effect on Sani. "No!" the Mew screamed. "You can't do this to me! This world is mine!"
"Not anymore," Celebi hovered around the Mew. "You are defeated, Belkor. Now it is time for you to go back to where you belong." The fairy waved a hand, and Belkor's black pokéball appeared in his hand. Belkor cringed as Celebi floated toward him with the pokéball. He tried to stop the fairy from coming, but a wave of light from Sani dissolved his dark attacks. "Return to your imprisonment, Belkor," Celebi demanded, pressing the ball against Belkor's chest.
The black Mew screamed again as white light danced over him, drawing him back into the pokéball. "This isn't over, Celebi! I will return!" he managed to shout, before he disappeared into the ball.
"Perhaps someday you will," Celebi told the black ball. "But not today." The fairy floated over to Destiny, and held the ball out for her inspection. "It seems that after all your troubles, you have finally won."
The girl turned to the assembled Dragons, then nodded over to where Giovanni was just beginning to regain consciousness. "Perhaps, but I think we still have some loose ends to tie up."
Walking over to the Rocket leader, Zeth and Greg hauled him up to his feet. Approaching him, Destiny stared him in the eyes. "Giovanni, you have caused much trouble for the inhabitants of Obsidia, as well as Kanto, Johto, and numerous other regions. I have little doubt that you will be locked away for the rest of your life, if the Dragons are even that lenient with you. What do you have to say for yourself?"
"I... I..." Still dazed, Giovanni stumbled over his words. "I seem... to have made a grave mistake."
Destiny almost laughed at the absurdity of that comment, "Yeah, you can say that again. Your selfishness nearly cost the entire planet its freedom."
The Rocket nodded slowly, "And I nearly lost my own life as well. We all would have become the eternal slaves of that wretched Belkor if you had not stopped him." Giovanni stared at the floor, "Yesterday, I would have never thought that I would say this, but I have to thank you."
Stunned, Greg nearly let go of the criminal, "What? After all you've done, you somehow find the need to thank her? You don't seem to realize that you're going to be locked away in the darkest prison that we could ever conceive of! How can you possibly be grateful for that?"
"Belkor controlled all my actions, and forced me to do his bidding. I could not even move a muscle without his consent. No imprisonment could match that torment."
"Well, we'll do our best," Greg assured him. The Dragon dragged Giovanni toward the large doorway that Destiny's team had come through. "Let's go see what we can come up with, shall we?"
As they passed Mewtwo, the Rocket leader suddenly pulled back, "Wait a moment." Greg started to pull him away, but Zeth quickly stopped him. Unable to meet his former servant's eyes, Giovanni instead stared at the clone's feet. "I know I can't make up for anything I did to you, Mewtwo, but now I understand what I must have put you through. For what it's worth, I'm sorry..." Turning away, the Rocket allowed himself to be led away by Greg and Zeth.
Destiny watched the two go, then turned to Sani, who had just hovered over to join her. "I don't know about you, but I'm about ready to go home. By the way, what do you think your parents are going to say when they see your new look?"
Sani looked down at her pure white fur for a moment, then shook her head. "Well, I doubt they'll say much..." The Mew glowed for a moment, returning to her original coloration. "I just finally figured out how to use Transform. Must have been the pressure or something."
"Transform? How did that work like that?"
Sani shrugged, "Well, I figured that Belkor was a dark-type, and darkness is overcome by light, so I just made myself into a light-type Mew."
Destiny shook her head, "I've never heard of a light-type pokémon before."
"Neither have I. I guess it worked, though."
No one noticed Mewtwo quietly slip away from the main group and leave. The clone didn't know why, but he felt compelled to leave the dark fortress. But as he stepped outside into the light, he found both Zeth and Greg unconscious on the ground. Hurrying over to Zeth's side, Mewtwo gave him a gentle shake to try to wake him up. When that didn't work, he shook Zeth harder. "Come on, wake up! Tell me where Giovanni went!"
Blinking, Zeth gazed up at Mewtwo. "That Rocket girl... Domino..." he managed to say. "She ambushed us."
Mewtwo released the teen and glanced around. "Don't worry, I'll find them. It's time for me to settle my score with the Rockets once and for all!"
Domino quickly activated the helicopter controls, piloting the craft away from Jade City. Talking nonstop about what plans they could use next to defeat the Dragons, she checked the scanning systems for any pursuit. She felt proud of herself for saving her boss, and was hoping that perhaps she would get a promotion out of it. Because of that, she was shocked when Giovanni finally managed to get a word in.
"It's over, Domino!" The Rocket shouted at her, cutting her off in mid-sentence. "The Dragons have won, and the Rockets are defeated! As of this moment, I am disbanding the Rockets, and ordering them to cease hostilities!"
Domino stared at him for a moment, her mouth hanging open. "What, are you crazy? You're just giving up?"
Giovanni shook his head, "No, I'm not. I found out just how wrong we were today, and now I'm going to start setting things right." Giovanni smacked the communications button, activating the systems that allowed him to give orders to all his Rockets. "Rocket forces, this is Giovanni. Your orders are to cease hostilities with the Dragons. Repeat, the fighting is over. This will be your last order. As of this moment, the Rockets are officially disbanded." As Giovanni had expected, the communications console lit up with responses from his forces. Ignoring them, Giovanni continued. "You have heard the order, now obey it. Any agents that I find still attacking the Dragons will be dealt with severely. I will tolerate no--" Giovanni jumped back as the board exploded in front of him.
Domino waved a black tulip in his direction. "I don't know what's gotten into you, but I'm not going to let you do this!" The agent quickly set the helicopter on autopilot, then shoved Giovanni toward the door leading to the back of the aircraft. "Get back in the back, now!"
Giovanni shook his head, "Not a chance, Domino. This is the end for the Rockets."
"Not while I'm still around!"
The former Rocket leader sighed, "So be it." Unexpectedly, Giovanni kicked the helicopter's steering controls, smashing them.
Domino blasted him with a bolt from her flower, knocking him down. "You're insane! Without the controls, I won't be able to take us out of autopilot and land us! We'll keep flying in a straight line until we run out of fuel!"
Standing, Giovanni brushed off his suit coat. "Yes, I know. That's not going to happen, though."
"So you do have a plan!" Domino grinned. "Tell me, what is it?"
Giovanni returned her smile. "Well, it goes something like this!" Reaching out, he flicked two switches, dumping all their fuel. Domino gasped as the fuel indicators suddenly dove down towards the empty symbols. Shoving past Giovanni, she ran out of the cockpit. The former Rocket boss followed her, then realized what she was up to and tried to stop her. Domino was too quick for him, though. Grabbing her jetpack, she flung open the helicopter's side door and dove out, slipping into the jetpack as she fell. A moment later, she activated the jets and sped off into the distance. As Giovanni watched, he could hear the helicopter's engines sputtering. The helicopter started to descend slowly as the engines used up the last of the fuel.
"You always did have a tendency to make people run from you." Giovanni spun around to find Mewtwo standing behind him. The helicopter lurched and he almost fell out the side, but Mewtwo pulled him back inside. "You really have changed, haven't you?"
The Rocked nodded, "Yes, I suppose I have." The helicopter lurched again, then started to fall. As he watched the ground rushing up at them, Giovanni shouted to Mewtwo over the wind howling past. "You should get out of here before we crash! There's no need for you to die here!"
Mewtwo glanced out the door. They would hit in a matter of seconds. "You're right, there isn't."
The helicopter smashed into the ground with a huge explosion, but by that time, neither Giovanni nor Mewtwo was still on the aircraft. Instead, the former Rocket found himself standing at a distance away from the smoldering wreckage, beside the clone. "Perhaps it is best if you do not perish yet, either," Mewtwo added, as they watched the aircraft burn.
