Chapter 19
Chapter 19 Lost Identity
"13, 14, 15," Karl said counting out his money, he handed it to the captain of the ferry.
"Thanks," he said taking the money; he turned to Tonya who just stood there with her arms folded.
"Fine," Karl said paying the captain for her fare.
"Girlfriends are a drain on the wallet," the captain said with a smile.
"ME AND HIM!" Tonya said outraged, "I wouldn't go out with someone that stupid."
"Don't worry about her," Karl said grabbing her arm and pulling her off the ship.
"Can you believe the nerve of some people?" Tonya said still angry, "how can they think someone as smart and beautiful as me would be going out with YOU!"
Karl was silent as he took out his Pokédex and activated the GPS feature, <Current location> the mechanical voiced chirped, <High Chi Island, home to Chow the Fighting Pokémon gym leader> Karl closed the dex.
"I mean come on, how come we don't get mistaken for brothers and sisters?" Tonya asked, "We don't even look like a couple."
"Do you want us to?" Karl asked.
Tonya blushed, the smashed Karl upside the head with a book, "OF COURSE NOT!"
Karl yelled out in pain, "Okay okay," he rubbed his head.
Off in the bushes close to Karl and Tonya a couple of red eyes staring at them.
"Well here is the Pokémon Center," Karl said pointing to the center.
"I know what a Pokémon Center looks like," Tonya said shaking her head.
"Well…I…never mind," Karl said pushing on the door, it didn't budge, "that's weird the center is usually always open."
"Maybe Nurse Joy had to leave cause of an emergency," Tonya said.
"Maybe, and there seems to be no one in town," Karl said, he quickly turned around as a bush right out of the corner of his eye shook, "Who's there!" Karl yelled taking a stance.
"MACHOKE!" the Pokémon said jumping out of the bushes and making a beeline for Karl.
"Watch out!" Tonya yelled jumping into Karl and knocking him out of the way.
"What-" Karl said as he hit the ground, he rolled and stood back up, "Tonya this thing means-" he stopped to see Tonya on the ground unconscious, "You're going to pay for that!" Karl said reaching for a Pokéball; he threw it on the ground.
"Charmeleon!" the Pokémon said appearing out of its ball.
"Charmeleon that Pokémon attacked us take it out!" Karl yelled.
"Char!" the Pokémon said giving Karl the thumbs up, it then ran towards Machoke and started grappling with the Pokémon. At first Charmeleon was pushing the muscle Pokémon back, but Machoke dug its feet into the ground and picked Charmeleon up, it then tossed the Pokémon over its head, Charmeleon hit the ground in a big thump.
"Charmeleon quick get up!" Karl yelled.
"Char," the Pokémon said slowly getting up, but Machoke didn't give Charmeleon a chance, it jumped on of the Pokémon driving its elbow into the Pokémon's back, it then used Submission, squeezing the life out of Charmeleon.
"CHAR!" the Pokémon yelled in its name in pain.
Karl reached for another Pokéball, but didn't get a chance to use it cause a quick shadow flew passed him and hit the Machoke knocking it off Charmeleon, and as quickly as the shadow appeared it disappeared.
Karl stood there dumb founded; the Machoke got up and ran away.
"Char," Charmeleon said slowly standing up.
"You okay Charmeleon?" Karl asked turning on his translator.
{Yeah, but what was that shadow?} He asked.
"I don't know but we better get Ton-" Karl looked at the empty space where Tonya had been.
{Wasn't Tonya right there?} Charmeleon asked.
"Yeah, but how…"
{Maybe she got up and left?} Charmeleon said then yelled out in pain.
"Doesn't add up," Karl said taking out Charmeleon's Pokéball, "you should get back in you're ball," he recalled Charmeleon; he then took out another Pokéball and threw it.
{Yes} Butterfree said appearing out of its ball.
"Go and see if you find Tonya!" Karl ordered.
{Right} the Pokémon said taking off in one direction.
"Please be okay," Karl said to himself.
Tonya slowly opened her eyes; she had a major headache and didn't know why.
"You awake?" a voice said.
"Yeah," Tonya said slowly standing up, the person was a well-built man who wasn't wearing a shirt. He looked to be about 28.
"Where am I?" she asked.
"At the Fighting Spirit gym," the man said.
"How did I get here?" Tonya asked.
"I carried you here, after a trainer attacked you," the man said.
"Oh!" Tonya said standing on the bed, she looked into the man's eyes, she had to look up cause the guy was a good 6'8, "my hero!" she jumped up and gave him a big hug.
"Thanks," the man said surprised, "oh my name is Chow, what is yours?
"My name…" Tonya let go of the gym leader and thought for a long time, "I don't remember."
"I would like to report a missing person," Karl said running into the Police office, Butterfree was right behind him.
"Okay," the officer said not even looking at Karl, "and how long has this person been missing?
"About an hour," Karl said, "she wa-"
"All missing person's report must be filed 48 hours after the missing person went missing, NEXT!" he said.
"But-"
"NEXT!"
A small girl pushed Karl out of the way, "excuse I want to report a missing Pokémon," she said.
"Okay," the officer said looking at the little girl, "and how long has your Pokémon been missing?"
"About an hour," the girl said.
"Here," the officer handed her a form, "fill this out and give it to me and I will get one of my best Jenny's on the job."
Karl was shocked; "bu-" Butterfree shook its head.
"Okay then," Tonya said coming out of the bathroom, her hair was a very dark red; she was also wearing a pink Gi outfit
"There," Chow said with a smile.
"I like it," she said admiring her hair in a mirror.
"Now all you need is a name for yourself," Chow said, "how about Ariel?"
Tonya thought for a second, "yeah Ariel sounds cool," Tonya said shadow boxing in the air.
"Now its time for your first lesson in Karate," Chow said getting up and walking into a room, Ariel followed. "Lesson number one," he said sitting down on the floor with his legs folded, "we eat!" he pulled off a white cloth surrounding the table, and tons of food was under it, there was everything from Apple salad to Zebra cakes, "Dig in," he said taking a plate and placing it on the table next to Ariel.
"Uhh…" Tonya eyed the food, "Thanks!" She yelled as she started gobbling down the food.
"I don't get it," Karl said sitting in the back of the Pokémon Center, "who could have taken her?"
{Beats me} Butterfree said, {you said a Machoke attacked you?}
"Yeah, but it couldn't have been the Pokémon, not unless there was more than one," Karl said, "but Charmeleon would have said something about it."
"Excuse me Karl Rennie?" Nurse Joy said walking up to Karl.
"Yes," Karl said standing up.
"I couldn't help but over hear your conversation and the gym leader Chow specializes in fighting Pokémon, maybe you could question him?" Nurse Joy suggested.
"Right," Karl said running out of the Pokémon Center, he walked back in, "is Charmeleon healed yet?"
"Yes he is," Nurse Joy said giving him the Pokéball.
"Thanks," Karl said leaving the Center and heading towards the gym leader.
"Now all you have to do to get in touch with your inner Chi," Chow said walking into the back room of the gym, "is hanging upside down by your legs for a while."
"You sure I should do this after eating all that food," Ariel said hanging upside down.
"Yeah, it works the stomach!" he patted her on the stomach, "have fun."
"Hello, is anyone here!" Karl yelled from another room.
"Another challenger, I will be back to get you down from there once I finish off this trainer," Chow said leaving.
"Wait! I have to use the bathroom!" Ariel yelled but it was too late.
"Who are you son?" Chow said appearing from the back and looking at Karl.
"I'm Karl Rennie, Nurse Joy said I could ask you about-"
"Challenging me fine!" Chow interrupted.
"No that's not-"
"Go Hitmonlee!" Chow said throwing a Pokéball.
"Hit-Mon-Lee!" the Pokémon yelled kicking the air.
"Fine then!" Karl said, "Go Sandshrew!" the Pokéball hit the ground and the sand mouse appeared.
"Attack Hitmonlee!" Chow yelled, "Mega Kick!"
"Sandshrew dig fast!" Karl yelled, the Pokémon obeyed and dug a hole underground, {this isn't the way I wanted to start this gym leader match, this guy is a little too impatient}
"Hitmonlee, Meditate!" Chow yelled.
Hitmonlee closed its eyes and sat on the floor with its leg crossed.
"Now's your chance Sandshrew attack!" Karl yelled.
Sandshrew exploded out of the ground right under Hitmonlee, but instead of hitting the Pokémon, Hitmonlee had jumped a second before.
"Finish it with Mega Kick!" Chow yelled, Hitmonlee hit Sandshrew straight back down into the ground, a cloud of smoke appeared and when it cleared, Sandshrew was unconscious.
"Sandshrew return!" Karl said recalling the Pokémon.
"One down two to go," Chow said smiling.
"I didn't come here for a badge!" Karl yelled.
"You're just saying that cause you are losing," Chow said.
"Fine I guess we will talk after I win the badge," Karl said, "Go Scizor!"
"Scizor!" the Pokémon said appearing out of its Pokéball.
"Okay Scizor Metal Claw!" Karl yelled.
The metal bug didn't move, "Zor!' the Pokémon said shaking its head.
"Hey! I risked my neck to repair your armor you owe me one!" Karl yelled.
"Sciz," the Pokémon said agreeing.
"Pathetic, can't even get his Pokémon to listen to him," Chow said, "Hitmonlee Mega Kick!"
"Scizor use-" before Karl could yell out a command Scizor sprang into action grabbing Hitmonlee's leg and throwing the Pokémon above its head. It then used Pursuit to hit the Pokémon while it was in mid-air.
"Gahh! Hitmonlee get up!" Chow yelled, "Hit!" the Pokémon said slowing getting up.
"Attack him!" Chow yelled.
The Pokémon ran at Scizor and starting kicking the Pokémon as fast as it could, but Scizor dodged every blow, it then grabbed both of Hitmonlee's legs and spin the Pokémon around, it released the Pokémon into the air and while it was floating towards the ceiling the Pokémon flew up there and hit Hitmonlee with a Metal Claw knocking it back to earth, the Pokémon hit the ground in a loud thud.
"Gahh! Hitmonlee return!" Chow said calling back his Pokémon.
Karl stood there with his mouth wide open; Scizor landed next to him and closed his mouth.
"Scizor," the Pokémon said.
"Next Pokémon!" Chow said throwing another Pokéball.
"Hitmonchan!" the Pokémon said smiling.
"Okay do you're stuff Scizor!" Karl yelled pointing at Hitmonchan, but nothing happened, "Scizor?" Karl said turning around to see the Pokémon shaking its hands.
"Scizor!" the Pokémon yelled.
"What?" Karl said turning on his translator.
{We're even} the Pokémon calmly said, {Now I would like to be returned to my Pokéball.}
"Fine!" Karl said he was pretty angry; he took out Scizor's Pokéball and called the Pokémon back.
Chow started laughing.
"What are you laughing at?!" Karl yelled.
"The way you train you're Pokémon!" he said laughing harder.
"That's it!" Karl said taking out his last Pokéball, "got to make this one count," his whispered as he threw the Pokéball.
"Charmeleon!" the Pokémon yelled.
"Easy win," Chow said to himself, "did you make a plea with this Pokémon to fight for you?" Chow said with a smile.
"Charmeleon is going to whip that smile off your face!" Karl said, "now Charmeleon attack with Flamethrower!"
"Hitmonchan, dodge it then go for a Mega Punch!" Chow yelled.
The Pokémon sidestepped the attack and with lighting speed ran and Mega Punched Charmeleon, who took the full of the attack, the fire Pokémon retaliated with a Slash attack to Hitmonchan.
"Chan," the Pokémon said staggering backwards.
"Meleon," the Pokémon said staggering backwards.
"Hitmonchan! Thunder Punch!"
"Charmeleon do a Tail Whip!" Karl yelled.
Hitmonchan ran and Thunder Punched Charmeleon shooting electricity throughout the fire Pokémon's body, but the Pokémon found the strength to spin around and smack Hitmonchan with its tail.
{Matching this Pokémon power attack to power attack isn't going to work} Karl thought.
"Hitmonchan this is another strong one attack with a Dizzy Punch!" Chow yelled.
"Charmeleon attacking head on isn't going to work use Flamethrower!" Karl yelled.
Charmeleon release a Flamethrower that Hitmonchan punched through and hit Charmeleon with a flurry of Dizzy Punches. Charmeleon slashed wildly trying to force the Pokémon to back off, it worked.
"Charmeleon you okay?" Karl said concerned for his Pokémon.
"Char," the Pokémon said breathing extremely hard.
"Just hang in there," Karl said looking at the Hitmonchan, it didn't look that exhausted, Chow had trained it well.
"Hitmonchan finish it off with Mega Punch!" Chow yelled.
"Wait for it," Karl said.
Charmeleon started to glow like he was evolving.
"What the-?" Chow said.
"Hit?" the Pokémon said stopping which was a big mistake as Charmeleon opened his mouth and released a devastating FireBeam that hit the punching Pokémon and sent it flying, it hit the ground with a loud thud and didn't get up.
"Gahh!" Chow said taking out his Pokéball and recalling his Pokémon.
"Good job Charmeleon!" Karl said.
"Char," the Pokémon said breathily heavily.
"It can't have much of a fight left," Chow said taking out his last Pokéball, he was about to throw it when the sound of a toilet flushing in the background went off, Ariel walked out and yawned.
"I was trying to tell you I needed to use the bathroom," Ariel said.
"T-T-Tonya?" Karl said surprised.
"Who?" Ariel said.
"Char?" the Pokémon said.
"It's really you!" Karl said running over to her, "but your hair is different."
"I don't know who you are but you are kind of cute," Ariel said.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Karl said, "I thought you were Tonya, she was a friend traveling with me who turned up missing earlier today, she looks just like you only she has black hair."
"My hair was black, until Chow made me dye it," Ariel said.
"Chow!" Karl said turning around and facing him.
"I beat you were the guy who attacked that Machoke in front of the center!" Karl yelled pointing at him.
"What?!" Chow said surprised.
"Then you took Tonya and brain-washed her!" Karl yelled accusingly.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," Chow said.
"Yeah right! That may work in court but I am smarter than that!" Karl said.
Ariel stood there completely scared at the conversation going on, if what Karl was saying was true then she was really this Tonya person he was talking about. Then on the other hand Chow had treated her nice, and knew about her amnesia. She looked back at Karl and Chow who were still yelling at each other.
"STOP!" Ariel yelled.
"You-" both Karl and Chow stopped and looked at Ariel who had a tear in her eye.
"You…both…get away from me!" she yelled and took off running out the door.
"Wait Tonya!"
"Wait Ariel!" They both took off after Ariel but when they reached outside she was nowhere in sight.
"Where did she go?" Karl said turning around and grabbing Chow by the shirt; Chow quickly flipped Karl over his shoulders. Karl hit the ground with a loud thud.
"I'm sorry Karl," Chow said sitting next to him, after a quick search around the gym they didn't find a trace of Tonya.
"Its okay," Karl said putting the ice on his shoulder.
"Here, this is all of Ariel-I mean Tonya's stuff I found," he handed Karl her cloths and Pokéballs, "I didn't want her to use her Pokémon cause of her memory lost."
"Thanks," Karl said taking the items and placing them on the floor, "what I don't get is how you found Tonya?"
"Well, I was walking back to the gym after my usual morning run, when I saw this girl walking around in a daze. She collapsed on my arms, I brought her back to the gym where I found out she had no memory."
"Why didn't you go to the police?" Karl asked.
"Well…I…I have a lot of unpaid parking tickets," Chow said.
"Geez!" Karl said shaking his head.
"Well if this will make you feel any better," Chow took a badge out of his pocket and handed it to Karl.
Normally Karl would have been excited to win a new badge but his mind was still on Tonya, "thanks…" Karl said sadly.
"You okay?" a feminine voice said as Ariel opened her eyes.
"Yeah, but how did I get here and who are you?" Ariel said backing away from the girl.
"I am your protector, you hired me to protect you from Karl, the trainer with a Charmeleon," the familiar feminine voice said.
"Then how come you weren't there when he and that gym leader attacked me," Ariel said.
"Cause, Karl ambushed us, don't you remember?"
"No," Ariel said.
"Tonya, you must have amnesia," she said.
"How can I trust you," Tonya said smugly.
"Cause I was the one who saved you from them when they tried to attack you again, they knocked you out," she said.
"What is your name?" Tonya asked.
"Protina," she said…
