Chapters 3-4
Chapter three
Umbra's stomach growled. Pangs of hunger shot through her body. She knew she
needed to get nourishment into her famished body soon. Out of sheer anger,
she charged and rammed her horns into a tree to release her built up rage.
There hadn't been a sniff of another animal in days. Umbra knew she must
leave this land soon because game was not good here. She could easily starve.
"Could my dream have been a sign?" She found herself wondering aloud.
Despite the conditions Umbra kept on going, all the way hoping to run into
something to eat. She remembered that when she left her homeland that she had
been cocky and confident she alone could find the caribou. What a lesson this
trip had taught her! Would she ever be the same care free, hyper, wolf she
once was? She kept moving on through the forest. It was about midday now.
Suddenly, movement shot though the leaf litter. Instinctively Umbra
pounced and snapped up the mouse in her powerful jaws. Then another. And
another. Soon she was snapping mice up in her mouth left and right! She had
unknowingly come upon a clan of mice living under ground. She was feeling
wonderful now. The taste of warm blood and flesh was great. This was heaven
after going so long without food. After finishing off the mice, for the first
time in days, Umbra's stomach was full. She was now, for the moment happy.
Lying down in a hollow under a full moon and a blanket of stars, Umbra slept
a blissful sleep. Again that night, she dreamt. She was running through the
forest again. Then she reached the clearing and tore through it silently.
Then the mighty cliff came. She looked over the edge and saw them and the
beautiful down once again. This Time if t was even more vivid. There were
caribou, flaffy, mareep, deer, stantler, big hares; everything that a wolf
would find to eat was existing for miles out in the valley not over crowded
but not sparse ether. But once again she awoke; disappointed to find that it
was only a dream.
chapter four
Umbra was resting by the edge of a pond that had a waterfall feeding into it
when she saw it again. She put herself in the position like she was ready to
pounce but instead sprung into the crystal clear water. Even though she is
part fire, she was a wolf and wolves love the water. Besides, it didn't hurt
her at all. Umbra swam around for about twenty minuets and then leapt out
onto the bank. She shook the water out of her coat but as she looked across
the bank in the pale moonlight, she saw red glowing eyes, and the glow of
golden rings. Umbra bristled and snarled and raised her hackles high. It
hissed back.
"What are you?" Umbra snarled fiercely.
"Not what. Who." Came a Mysterious hissing reply. It gracefully leapt
from the shadows, its sleek body and silky black fur glowing with the light
of the golden rings on its body. It hissed again.
"You!" Umbra hissed. "You are the fiend that tried to kill me before!"
She leapt at her attacker but was thrown back sideways in mid air from some
odd counter attack.
"Hidden power," said the creature. "I can kill something twice my size
with it."
"Who are you?" "What is it that you want with me?" Umbra asked losing her
patience with this mind game.
"He he he…" he snickered. "I have come for I know the way to the
caribou," he said "and the down."
"The down?" Umbra thought. "How could he know about the down?"
"How could I know of the down you ask?" he hissed. "It is simple. I have
been sending you images of your destination in the form of dreams. Yes it is
a real place. I have just been sending you pictures in your mind and making
you dream of them. Yes I can read your thoughts and yes I've been following
you."
Umbra was awe struck. This creature had known her fears the whole time. He
probably even fed off of fear.
"So why help me?" she inquired.
"You will battle me. If I win you are to go and never return. And if you
win, I will direct you to the caribou, and tell you which way to go but
nothing more." Umbra pondered. How could she know for sure if she could trust
this umbreon? She hadn't even gotten his name!
"How do I know I could trust you?" she asked but he was already getting
ready for battle. "Horrid little devil." Umbra muttered under her breath.
"Prepare for battle!" The little creature shouted and laughed a cold
laugh to the moon. "For the battle of your life is about to begin!" Umbra got
into position. She was nervous but she would tear this creature to ribbons
with her horns and claws and fangs.
