A SITE DEDICATED TO THE 1971 PLYMOUTH ROAD RUNNER

A COUPLE PICS OF MY 1971 ROAD RUNNER...

The 1971 model year brought Chrysler's attempt at making the B-body more aerodynamic
with their self titled "fuselage" body styling. Gone was the square lined styling replaced with
a more rounded, stream-lined body contour. The body had pronounced wheelwell bulges, which gave the
Road Runner and GTX a particularly muscular look. A new performance hood had outward-facing simulated vents
and louvers which announced engine displacement. As with earlier models, the standard engine was the 383 V8
4 bbl. Optional engines were the 440 4bbl, 440+6 and the 426 HEMI. The 340 V8 was offered later in the year.
The Road Runner was offered only as a hardtop in 1971. Base model list price was $3,147. GTX list price started at $3,733.
Sales for the Road Runner and GTX dropped to a new low in 1971. Only 14,484 Road Runners were sold that year. A far
cry from the soaring sales of 1969 which approached 85,000. The GTX fared even worse with a mere 3,212 units sold which
was ultimately the end for the GTX model. Despite the poor sales, Plymouth's B-body performed brilliantly on the Grand
National stock car circuit piloting Richard Petty to his then third Championship, and final under the Plymouth sponsorship.
