After visiting a local museum, four young boys rent a boat and begin a journey that sends them back to the dawn of time. Finding a hidden cave the boys enter and emerge on the other side finding that the further up the river they go, the further back in time they go. Along the way they encounter prehistoric creatures until the reach the very dawn of man. Realizing that they can go no further they return to modern time discovering that itwas all a dream...or was it. Karel Zeman, who produced the original Checz version of this film was impressed by the writings of Jules Verne and based this adventure on some of them. The creatures are mostly brought to the screen through stop-motion animation although some of the are rod puppets similar to those used by Harryhausen and O'brien for THE LOST WORLD. When the film was purchased for US distribution, several cuts were made and American footage was shot using four different boys in similar clothing, unfortunately it's often obvious that the boys are different in the American version. The film rarely makes an appearence on TV any longer but it was a regular back in the 1960's. It was even serialized for use on the popular late afternoon kids shows on independant channels. Much of it is based on scientific knowledge at the time and proved to be an educational tool that was as informative as it was entertaining. The title is worth seeking out but video distribution is difficult to find.
