FLESH GORDON (1972)

Of all the stop-motion films ever produced, FLESH GORDON is the most bawdy and raunchy. During the 1970's the porno film industry was at it's height. Fans of classic sci-fi films decided to get together and produce a film that was basically a retelling of the Flash Gordon serial with the subtilites of sexual innuendo replaced with actual sex.

Flesh, Dale and Flexi Jerkoff head to the Planet Porno in an attempt to stop the nefarious Wang The Merciless from using a sex-ray on the earth. They are helped by Prince Precious and his bi-sexual band of merry men before defeating Wang and saving Earth for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (whatever his or her sexual preference might be).

FLESH GORDON features some of the finest stop-motion special effects of the 1970's.  It was an incredibly low-budget feature and what finally makes it to the screen is amazing. The miniature rocketships and highly detailed and the creatures are beautifully designed and executed for the screen.  Their are several moments when the use of rear-screen projection diminishes the quality but it's never that distracting. Two segments of note include a battle between a metallic winged creature and Flesh. The scene is obviously inspired by the skeleton scene in THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD. The other segment in the is the giant creature who kidnaps Dale and takes her to the Tower of Murder. The creature looks like the illegitimate offspring of Vincent Price and the Cyclops of 7TH VOYAGE and is voiced by Craig T. Nelson who is best known to modern audiences as Coach on the TV sitcom of the same name.  Portions of this segment are inspired by King Kong, including a scene in which the creature tears the top of Dale and the scene where the creature meets his demise on top of a high tower.

The film is highly recommendable for it's stop-motion animation but you should be warned that it IS a porno film. It exists in two formats, an uncut version and an R-Rated version.  The R-rated version cuts the really hard sex but it's still amazing how much actually makes it into the unrated version.  There is complete frontal nudity in both versions.
