"Great scientific advances are often times
sudden accomplished facts before most of us are dimly aware of them.
Breath-takingly unexpected, for example, was the searing flash that announced
the atomic age. Equally unexpected was the next gigantic stride, when man
moved out of his very orbit to a point more than 20 MILLION MILES TO
EARTH."
- From the opening of the film.
In Gerra, a fishing village in Sicily, Pepe (a young Sicilian boy) is fishing with Berico and Mondello, to experienced men of the sea. A whirring noise is heard overhead as suddenly the gigantic airship XY21, a single staged astro-propelled rocket, crashes into the Mediterranean Sea. Berico and Mondello row their boat to the airship and discover a hole in it's side. They enter the ship to find Colonel Clader, alive, but barely conscious and Dr. Charmin who is just barely alive.
Word reaches the Pentagon and General McIntosh, who, along with Doctor Yule, heads towards the fishing village in hopes of finding survivors among the 17 men.
In Gerra, the fishing village is steeped in excitement as the Commissario tries to gather information and get help for the survivors. Since the local doctor is unavailable they decide to contact Doctor Leonardo, a zoologist, for assistance. Fortunately Doctor Leonardo's grand-daughter, who is staying with them is a trained nurse, just about to become a certified Doctor. Little Pepe, meanwhile, has discovered a cylinder from the airship marked U.S.A.F. PROJECT 5, and opens it to find a solid gelatinous object and decides that he can sell this to Doctor leonardo for money to buy a cowboy hat and toy guns
In the Commune Di Gerra, Colonel Clader revives and questions Dr. Charmin, who is badly scarred. Charmin gives Calder his notes before he final dies.
The gelatinous object, now in the possession of Doctor Leonardo, begins to move as a tiny creature emerges from within. The creature is reptilian looking, but stands on his hind legs with a human-like torso. His grand-daughter, Marissa, who was frightened by the new creature, and the doctor put the creature in a huge cage until morning when they plan on taking him to the Zoologico in Rome. By morning the creature has grown from 3 inches to 3 feet.
General McIntosh and Doctor Yule arrive in Gerra, where they meet with Colonel Calder. Together they learn about the specimens discovery from Pepe and try to find Doctor Leonardo before he reaches Rome. By now, the creature has grown to almost six-foot and has escaped from the Doctor and Marissa. With the help of the local police and the Commissario a search party is formed to capture the beast alive to try and study it.
The Creature, who has made it's way into a barn, is confronted by a dog and in defense, kills the animal only to have the military, local police and the animal's owner arrive. In a confrontation, the creature is attacked by the dog's owner and stabbed with a pitchfork. Now angered, the creature turns and attacks the man, as the police and Colonel Calder shoot at it with their guns, but to no avail.
Escaping once again, it is decided to trap the creature using sulphur, the creature's food source. They then intend to drop a metal net over it and then jolt it with electricity since, while on Venus, they discovered that electricity has a somewhat paralyzing effect on the creatures. The beast is caught and taken to the Guarding Zoologico in Rome where it is studied while kept sedated under a continuous flow of 1800 volts of electrical current. A press conference is held where details of the Venusian flight and the creature are revealed to them. While showing them the beast an accident occurs and the beast is revived. Breaking out to the zoo, the creature confronts an elephant in a bitter battle before fleeing into the streets of Rome
With the military on it's trail, the creature finally makes it's way to the Colosseum, where under a heavy barrage of military fire, the creature is finally stopped for good. As the creature, now dead, is covered with fragments of the Colosseum, Doctor Yule looks on and questions "Why is it always so costly for man to move from the present, into the future."
