Course Description

 

Course Catalog Description: Lecture and seminar course focusing on the development of architecture in the Middle East in the twentieth century. Research and visual illustrations of the works of prominent architects.

Prerequisites: Completion of 45 credits

Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce the students to the development and contemporary status of architecture in the Middle East.

Course activities: Lectures, Readings and Discussion of readings

Exams: Mid and Final, Assignments.

Grading: Assignments 40% - Mid-term Exam 20% - Final Exam 40%

Assignments: Researching Architecture in the Middle East

 

Assignment 1

Title: The Development of Architecture in the Middle East Regions

Level of Effort: Group work (12 students - 4 groups - 3 students in each group)

Subject: Each group is required to cover one of the following regions:

1. North: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, Jordan

2. West: North Africa

3. East: Iran and Iraq

4. South: Gulf Countries and Yemen

Grade: 15 % of over all course grade.

Due date:          Weeks 6 and 7

Requirements:

1) ˝ hour PowerPoint presentation.

2) 100x70 cm poster

 

Groups:

1- East: Rua + Dalal + Esraa

2- North: Haya+Ameena+Maryam

3- South: Nawal+Fatima+Rashed

4- West: Adel+Mhmd+Hamad

 

Assignment 2

Title: Contemporary Architecture in a Middle Eastern City

Level of Effort: Individual work

Subject: Each student covers architecture in one selected city from group work region research. Students are required to read and use related chapters in text books:

1) Planning Middle Eastern Cities: Algiers, Baghdad, Sana’a, Tunis, Cairo, and Dubai

2) The Evolving Arab City: Amman, Beirut, Rabat, Riyadh, Kuwait, Manama, Doha, and Abu Dhabi

Grade: 25 % of over all course grade.

Due date:          Weeks 9 to 13

Requirements:

1) ˝ hour PowerPoint presentation.

2) 100x70 cm poster

3) 2-pages chapter summary
