Course Catalog Description

Continuing the with site and building design problems that were investigated in ARCH 305, and place emphasis on programmatic and environmental determinants and building in the natural and urban context. Lecture, studio and field trips.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to develop the students’ skills in developing architectural design projects.

Teaching Methodology

  • Teaching Design principles through lectures and assignments.
  • Application using the project-based approach.

Textbook

The Course textbooks are:

1- Elements of Architecture: From Form to Place. by Pierre von Meiss

2- The Green Studio Handbook: Environmental Strategies for Schematic Design. by Alison Kwok and Walter Grondzik.

They are available in the students' book store in Shuwaikh. Go get your copy before they vanish!.

Project 1: Kuwait Plaza at Fentas

Duration:                  9-Weeks

Level of Effort:        Individual

Grade:                        60% of over all course grades

Due date:                  Thursday, 30/04/2009

 

The Project:

The client is "Kuwait Municipality" and the project is "Kuwait Plaza at Fentas".
The client is looking for proposals to develop of part of Fentas administrative and commercial area as an entertainment and commercial Plaza. The Plaza should include entertainment, commercial, restaurants, cafeterias and other attractive activities for people.  It is also required to develop adequate car parking and traffic inside the site.

The Challenge

The client is expecting participants to show "creativity and challenge" in their design proposals. As the client put it: "المطلوب من المشاركين أن يظهروا روح الإبداع والجرأة في التصميم"

The Site

The site is located in Fentas area. The total site area is 85,400 m2. Please refer to the attached map for site location.

 

The Program

Students are required to develop a program for the project based on similar local, regional and international examples.
