The Omniverse Fan Fic Interview Part 1
Michael Sacal

Special note: Most of the writers interviewed here are no longer involved with Omniverse. Some of the ones who submitted replies to the original version of the interview have been removed since they never submitted any stories.

Hi all:

I'm Michael Sacal and I'm Editor in Chief of The Omniverse Fan Fic Site.

I've gathered all my fellow writes for a little Q&A session, to let you, our readers, know what we're about and what you can expect from our web site.

The format of this Q&A will start with a question and answers by as many of the writers that were available at this time.

There are 10 questions total, and since there are 10 answers to each question, this interview will be presented in three parts. Part 1 will cover four questions while the other two will cover three each.

(What is The Omniverse Fan Fic Site: The Omniverse Fan Fic Site revolves around the concept of Merging the DC, Marvel, Wildstorm, Image and Extreme/Awesome Universes into one single, cohesive reality, as well as featuring the Scifiverse Fan Fic imprint, which features a merged Star Trek and Babylon 5 fan fics, with more sci fi merged stories to come later on, and the Omegaverse Imprint, which specializes in more animated style fan fic, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers. The cut off point for the site is January 2001. All events happening before December 31st 2000 in the comics is part of continuity and any happening after are not. When it comes to the Scifiverse, those series start from scratch.)

Part 1: Who Are We, What Have We Done and Why We're Here...

Question 1: Who are you and what do you write?

I'm Michael Sacal (MS), and besides being Editor in Chief and Webmaster, I write Superman, JLA (Justice League Avengers) for the Omniverse and Babylon: The Next Generation for the   Scifiverse Imprint.

Jason Helf (JH), Toronto, Canada and I write Nightcrawler and Demons.

Kris Morris and I'm the World’s Finest Tales of Suspense writer.

I am Matthew Pierce (MP).  I am from Niagara Falls, NY and I am currently in sunny Japan! I write Team7.

Well, my name is Matthew E. Rowe (MR), and I'm the Editor in Chief of The Omegaverse Imprint.

Gregory Hernandez (GH), Greater Brooklyn, NY – World’s Finest Tales of Suspense (Spider Man Team Ups), FF backups and World’s Greatest Heroes miniseries.  Future writer of Heroes For Hire and the Fantastic Four regular series.

My name is Dawn Byrnes (DB) and I'm writing two canon titles - StormWatch and taking over WildCATs later on - and two original series with canon characters - Traveler and The Catchers.

I'm known as Rodimus, or Rodimus_2316 (R2) in places with other Rodimus handles.  I'm one of the head editors of DC 2099, and wish to co-write Batman 2099 (my creation) with someone.

Question 2: What fan fic work are you better know for?

MS: I've only done two fan fic series, Crime Syndicate of Amerika for DC Legends and Timewalker for the Valiant 1 Fanfic Group and later for the Valiant Fanfic Association .I believe I'm better known for my work on Timewalker.

JH: This would be my first attempt at fanfics other people are actually gonna read.

KM: This is my first attempt at fan fiction.

MP: I don't think I am known for anything fic related.  You can find my Iron Man series at Marvel-X, and some various works at Marvel and DC Future Shock, some more work at Marvel and DC Year 2 and even more if you visited DCX before its demise.

MR: Well, I am new to fan fiction, so i guess this would be my first known fan fiction work.

DS: I think I'm better known for aborted attempts at things so far, frankly. Though I still get e-mails on that one issue of Generation X...

GH: None.

DB: Not comic book fan fiction actually, but work based on Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series. I only got started on comic fan-fiction after coming here.

R2: My first was Transformers 2099, followed by various fanfic projects from a fanfic group I used to have.

Question 3: How long have you been working on fan fic?

MS: I think around a little over 18 months. I believe I started working on Timewalker in the fall of 99.

JH: Well, not counting all the stuff I wrote for myself, a little over a month.

KM: About a month or so ago.

MP: My first fanfic was a Captain Mar-vell piece in 1987.  My first web-related work was in Summer 1999.

MR: Well, this is my first fan fic series, so I guess I could say since the time Mike and myself started up the idea for the Omniverse in early 2001.

DS: "Working"? I'm sorry, this is how I relax. I'm a freelance writer. Fanfic wise, I've been relaxing for 10 years. My first fic was written at ten, and it was a He-Man fic

GH: Like most writers, I've written stories featuring other characters who've inspired me. I'm a big Moorcock fan and have written some things featuring his Eternal Champion. One of these can be found on the MM site, Multiverse.org

DB: About six months seriously, but been writing stuff down for years.

R2: I've been doing fanfic for about six years.

Question 4: What attracted you to work at Omniverse?

MS: The chance to create my own fan fic site was just too good to pass. After a little over a year of working on Timewalker I thought I was ready to have my own site. The idea first came to me while at the CBR chat room, talking with Matthew Rowe, who is head of our Omegaverse Imprint , and while chatting on ICQ with Barry Reese. I originally wanted a DC site to host the half of a JLA/Avengers crossover Trevor Lee and I have been working on for around a year now. Barry suggested the idea of coming up with a new kind of web site, not just another DC site. I mentioned that I wanted to do a site in which all the characters from all comic book universes existed, and that's how Omniverse came to be.

JH: Well, I had planned on starting a similar site with David Grouix, who's also a writer here, and we were still in planning stages when he joined up here, so, since we somehow always end up being a team, I followed suit.

KM: Mike and Trevor convinced me to write a Spiderman Team Up series.

MP: Everyone else dismissed the idea of involving Wildstorm in a DC related universe even though DC owned it.  There was not enough fandom interested in creating a new fanfic group based on Image/Wildsorm and the 'other' merged site declined to include non Marvel/DC properties.  Omniverse advertised itself on HEROES and then I saw the ruthless and menacing Barry Reese was already here.  I am only here to ensure that everyone else survives his wrath.

MR: Well, I thought it would be fun to do fan fiction, and Mike and myself just started talking in a chat and the omniverse idea started to form.

DS: Frankly, the fact that Barry Reese left. I'd of loved Barry to write these titles. He chose not to, for many valid reasons. So I figured I'd help out.

GH: I started as a reader.  I was completely enthralled with Michael Sacal's vision for the site, that of having all the major comic universes merged into one.  I then offered Mike my help if he ever needed it, for any aspect of the site:  art, HTML coding, or help in writing anything.  It was my pleasure to get involved.

DB: The chance to right a few wrongs done to SW when the series ended, and to combine a whole lot of original material I had created with canon to produce a believable story that draws from many things.

R2: I think it has a cool setup, one that needs to be done, and I really want to get DC 2099 working in it also.
