The Bucket Shop This resturant/tavern got it's name from serving beer in buckets. Located near the stock yards & packing houses, it once was a very thriving establishment. They were famous for their beefburgers. They were the best around. The Southgate at Alabama & King Hill now has a very, very close replica of the Bucket Shop Beefburger. The interior shot shows how the resturant side looked until the 1990's before it was remodeled by the new owner, Rusty Hurst. I don't have a picture of the tavern side.
It had been re-opened by the new owner and the beefburgers were very close to the original Bucket Shop beefburger
The Bucket Shop was closed for a few years and in 2004, Eric & Linda Ambrozi leased the Bucket Shop from Rusty Hurst. It was re-opened as Daddy O's, a combination biker bar & resturant. Eric passed away in Dec 2004
It was sold again as The Bucket Shop
Boudreaux's Louisiana Seafood and Steaks recently purchased the building as a 2nd site for their company

FIRST WARD TAVERN

2101 St Joseph Avenue
First Ward House, the oldest bar west of the Mississippi River, located on the northeast corner of Grand Avenue and St Joseph Avenue, first opened in 1878. The bridge in the background once spanned Chicago Northwestern tracks. A newer bridge had replaced the old, but now the tracks & bridge are both gone, as well as the hill. Originally, the upstairs was a hotel. For decades, it doubled as a brothel. In the 1950's, bricks from the top 2 floors were used to reconstruct the Pony Express Stables. Over the years, the building became very dilapidated and was in danger of being torn down. In 1998, the new owner totally remodeled the old structure and appears to be doing a prosperous business.

HITCHING POST

This used to be Bill & Jim's Hitching Post, located on North Belt, near the Country Club. It became The Nut House in the early 70's. A really neat night club with dancing & live Rock N' Roll Bands but got closed down for selling to minors. After changing hands several times, it became a day care center for children called Kids Korral. It became Black Velvet then finally became a collectibles store.
