GOETZ BREWERY

The Goetz Brewery was located on Sixth Street between Lincoln and Albemarle streets
Michael Karl Goetz, a native of Germany, started the brewery in 1858. His family continued the prosperous company in St Joseph until 1960, when they sold it to Pearl Brewing of San Antonio
The St. Joseph plant focused on production of Goetz's popular Country Club Malt Liquor. When San Antonio was able to produce the malt liquor, it pretty much ensured the plant would be closing down
Dick DeShon, a local beer enthusiast who married into the Goetz family, said Pearl Brewing had offered the family a deal they couldn't refuse in a time when big-time beer makers were beginning to saturate the market
It has been a large empty field for many years
Many jobs were lost when it closed. It was a great loss for the city
Miss Snowcap promoted Goetz Brewery in television commercials during the 1950's
Photo #10 was taken in 1934

WESTERN DAIRY & ICE CREAM CO

This was also known as Justrite Quality Chekd dairy Photo #1 - As it looked in 1966
Photo #2 - A milk truck I drove in 1967
Photo #3 - As it looks in the year 2000
One of St Joseph's oldest dairies,Western Dairy & Ice Cream once sat on this now empty lot

I worked here as a retail milkman, home delivering dairy products from 1966 until 1976 when we got notice that they were doing away with the home delivery service

The dairy was owned by Augie & George Fenner. Augie made most of the recipes, his chocolate milk & egg nog were unsurpassed. At one time, cottage cheese and butter were also made at the dairy

The dairy was sold to Hiland Dairy in Springfield MO in the early 70's but still processed milk here. The business now belongs to Roberts Dairy in Iowa, however, there is no longer a dairy here, all items are now trucked in. There is no longer a cooler or a plant, just a big parking lot with a trailer for an office.
