Henrys Hamburgers

HENRYS HAMBURGERS

This Henrys Hamburgers was located on South 28th St just south of Messanie. It was built in the early 1960's and replaced a small gas station that once stood at the location. It later became the Parkway which had great Broasted Chicken. There were 2 other Henry Drive Ins in St Joseph, one on St Joseph Avenue and another close to the Belt Highway and Mitchell Avenue. Their menu included hamburgers, tenderloins, french fries and many other items that were delicious and very affordable.
After the overhead railroad bridge nearby was removed in the 1990's, a gas station/convenience store was built back on the location.

Pinzino's Music BoxPinzino's Music Box

Pinzino's Music Box / Dante's

Located on the SW corner of 19th & Frederick, Emillo "Jimmy" Pinzino and wife Violet Pinzino operated a popular young adult hangout called the MUSIC BOX. Originally called the LUNCH BOX resturant, owned by Bradley & Stella Christie (also owners of the Snow White), Pinzino purchased it from the Christies in 1945. The MUSIC BOX was later renamed to DANTE's ITALIAN AMERICAN CUSINE. The building was closed on New Year's Eve, 1973 and later sold

Black Angus Room

Black Angus Room

Once located in Hotel Robidoux on the northwest corner of Fifth & Francis, this outstanding supper club featured jumbo sirloin steaks, lobster, and other fine foods. (My very first job began here. In 1959, still a freshman in high school, I worked part-time here as a dishwasher at the rate of 50 cents per hour.)

Wades Indian Grill

Wades Indian Grill

Wade's Indian Grill was located at 17th & Mitchell. Their famous WAHOO! burger & WAHOO! chilli bowl was delicious. They had the best tenderloins and chilli in town. I can remember that their brain sandwich was 25 cents and delicious, but I could not take looking at it and never ordered another one.

It was "rumored" for many that Liggett owned it, asked $150,000 for it and didn't get any takers so he had the building bulldozed down. If anyone knows the true facts, any other photos, or information about Wades, I would love to hear from you.
Wade's had a beautiful western decor inside. If memory serves me right, there was a huge painting of the Battle of Big Horn where Custer met his Waterloo. The building was razed sometime in the 1960's but the huge totem pole remained for years. Not pictured, it was to the left side of the building. Several businesses have occupied the space since and the totem pole is now gone

Jerre Anne Cafeteria Jerre Anne Cafeteria

Jerre Anne Cafeteria

Jerre Anne Cafeteria located at 26th & Mitchell, has served a great homemade dinners and fabulous homemade pasteries now since 1930.

Das Weinerschnitzel

Many people don't remember Das Weinerschnitzel. It resided on the Southwest corner of Belt & Frederick Ave. It was a very short lived hot dog drive-in. The building was made in the shape of a big hot dog. It used to sit where the Bus Stop bench is now. You can still see the driveways on Frederick. It was in a very bad location as it was too close to the Belt & Frederick intersection which made it really hard to exit the lot.

The Thirs-T Drive-in resturant featured car hop service and was located on King Hill Avenue. Their Broasted Chicken was the greatest. Several businesses have tried to survive here but you can see by the photo that it is used for a storage area at this time.

A&W

This is the remains of A&W Root Beer on St Joseph Avenue. Just the remnants of the old A&W Sign. The building is gone.Nothing but trees & shrubs remain plus 2 concrete driveways. There was a smaller A&W just south of Frederick on the Belt. A gas station now sits in that area. Current picture to come.Today, the A&W is located inside East Hills Mall.

Bucket Shop

The Bucket Shop This resturant/tavern got it's name from serving beer in buckets. Located near the stock yards & packing houses, it once was a very thriving establishment. They were famous for their beefburgers. They were the best around. The Southgate at Alabama & King Hill now has a very, very close replica of the Bucket Shop Beefburger. The interior shot shows how the resturant side looked until the 1990's before it was remodeled by the new owner, Rusty Hurst. I don't have a picture of the tavern side.
It had been re-opened by the new owner and the beefburgers were very close to the original Bucket Shop beefburger
The Bucket Shop was closed for a few years and in 2004, Eric & Linda Ambrozi leased the Bucket Shop from Rusty Hurst. It was re-opened as Daddy O's, a combination biker bar & resturant. Eric passed away in Dec 2004, Linda is still running the business.
