January 28th, 2003
Started Richard Simmons on the 27th
Joined Fitness Club called "Houston Wellness Center" on the 26th
Had 2nd workout today.
My sister died today... she was 58.
I am grieving, and sad, but I am not going to allow my grief to include smoking or overeating or not exercising.
Weight already down to 402
Thighs killing me!
Left knee hurts real bad...
Feeling a lot better about myself.
29th day without a cigarette, cough gone!
|
|
Jan 30th, 2003
A little less pain today, but knee is still bad... good workout except I nearly blacked out... I gotta eat a little more. Typical of me to over-do the diet stuff. My flexibility is getting better fast!
|
Jan 30th (cont:)
Still struggled last night starting around 7pm... I seem to get real hungry from 7pm until 11pm (or when I go to sleep) Wish I could get rid of that late night hunger crap...
|
Feb 1, 2003
Good workout yesterday, was showed new stretches. Didn't do well with food. Wife was going to mall and said she'd bring back chinese food, ate the whole thing and 2 pieces of cake between 5pm and midnight. Felt bad... Back on the wagon today. I should be strong enough to tell her "no thanks" but I guess not yet.
Shuttle Columbia Lost today with all hands... very, very sad...

Feb 3rd, 2003
Weighed in at 397, even after doing a lousy job of following my diet this weekend. Gotta find a way to NOT eat from 5pm til midnight! Good workout... Other step-daughter moved back in with us ... from her "real" dads... More stress!
Real glad she's home though....
|
 |
Feb 14th, 2003
Stll not doing the eating part right, but doing great on the workouts. Noticing a lot more flexability and pain in joints nearly gone. Except the damn knee, it's still hurting a lot. Took yesterday off from workout to see if that helps. Feet are about 1/2 the size they use to be... shoes fit sorta OK now Wrote & emailed Richard Simmons for help i.e. access to help web site, no response.
|
Feb 14th, 2003 (cont)
Weighed on the 12th of Feb at 396... Today at 394.5. If I have to both starve AND workout every day to lose this weight it's really gonna be a struggle. I didn't eat all yesterday (Thursday) until 8pm, because I ate at a buffet Wed night. Gotta get the eating figured out...
My BP was 154/78!! and no pills in a week! Cough and spitting up crud totally gone now.
No more Richard Simmons, just trying to eat right food and correct proportions.
|
Feb 22nd, 2003
Knee pain persists, went to my doctor, he made me an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on 28th of Feb.
Weighed in at 392.5, BP perfect! (158/78)

 |
Feb 27th, 2003
For reasons I can't post publicly, I had to revert as much as I could to my earlier lousy health, so I haven't been dieting or working out. Feet and ankles are swollen again, back is sore, knee is killing me. I hope the bastards are happy this time...
I start back on my program today... I am both dreading and looking forward to my workout. I hope I have not lost all the ground I gained...
|
Feb 27th (cont)
I'm back from working out and yahooo!!
Weighed in at 392.5, and was able to do my EXACT workout! 7 days no dieting OR workout and didn't gain any weight! I was REALLY sweating it... figgered I'd have to start all over.
Guess it shows that if you lose the weight correctly, it wont pop back on first time you "screw up".
THIS, is great to know!
|
March 3rd, 2003
Weighed in at 393.5 Don't know how it's possible to gain a pound, but Oh well... just hope it goes away when I weight in next... Added an exercise to my workout.. a Leg Press... I do 2 sets, 20 reps, at 190 lbs. Hope it helps my knee...
Still eating at night... not good....
|
March 13th 2003
Weighed in at 390... was glad to see the weight I "gained" came off plus some more...
Workout's going well. Knee still really bad, but nothing I can do about it. Wearing sneakers now... feet have really shrunk! Added chest machine (press) .. Doing better at not eating after dinner... and when I do it's only fruit.
|
March 17th, 2003
Lost 2 more pounds! Cool!
Weighed in at 388. Added 20 pounds to leg press, 10 to chest machine.
|
March 19th 2003
America has gone to war with Iraq...
May God protect our troops....
|
March 31st, 2003
Gained about 4 pounds, then lost it again. Still at 388. Weight fluctuating quite a bit, but generally downward. Frustrating a little, but oh well. Maybe I'll just count calories or fat grams... *sigh*...
|
April 1st, 2003
Trying to figure out why knee won't get better. Going with the theory that there's an imbalance due to some muscles getting stronger, but not being stretched properly. Quads and calf muscles are Waaaay too tight!
|
April 3rd, 2003
Weighed in at 386... so I've lost 25 pounds! I'm going to go get a shot in my knee tomorrow. The theory is; Because there's so much pain when I extend my leg, I have been walking wrong by landing flat footed, and straining the knee, calf muscle, and quad muscles... Guess we'll see....
First day without creamer in my coffee... no sweat...
Still searching for the "best" diet plan ... MINE, not anyone elses. I can write my own if I put my mind to it... and I am :)
|
|
April 8th, 2003
Weighed in at 381...
30 pounds!!
|
|
April 15th, 2003
Weighed in at 377. Shot in knee helped a lot... still painful but at least I can walk semi-normally, and this seems to be taking the strain off other parts of the leg. I'm on my 3rd pair of shoes... as the other shoes went from "couldn't wear" to "wear" to "too loose" Who'd a thought a foot could have so much to lose??
|
April 15th, 2003 (cont:)
Up to 11 minutes on the lifecycle... can't believe how much more difficult it is compared to the
Nu-Step... which makes me more determined to keep increasing my time on it! Food - Doing well ... finding and eliminating the fat foods, and replacing with healthy, and doing better at not eating at night.
Back is sore, but not bad at all...
|
April 18th, 2003
Changed workout to a much more aerobic workout, and have dropped Nu-Step machine and am now on Lifecycle, and have added a bunch of weight machines. New workout differs from old workout by getting my heart rate up, and keeping it up throughout most of the 1 hour 15 minutes it takes to complete the workout.
First day - huffing and puffing pretty good, soaked with sweat... gotta be good eh? :)
|
April 18th, 2003 (cont)

April 22nd, 2003
Weighed in at 374, after having gone back up to 379 after pigging out on Easter Sunday. Got another shot in my left knee on 4/21/03. Have increased workout by quite a bit after the soreness went away.
|
April 25th, 2003
Weighed in.... 370.5! That's 40 pounds babeee!
Feelin pretty danged good about this too....
|
April 28th, 2003
Today was my 3 month evaluation at the Wellness Center. The tale of the tape:
BP down
Pulse down from 78 to 60
Weight down from 411 to 370
Body Fat down from 42.9% to 35.8%
Bicep up from 17 1/4" to 18 3/8"
Flexed bicep up from 18 3/8" to 20 1/2"
Waist down from 62" to 55"
Calf down from 22" to 21 1/4"
Flexibility increased substantially.
Based on this evaluation, more machines were added - Abdominal twist, Crunch, and lower back machine. Someone broke the dang scale at my doctors office... hope they fix it!
|
May 4th, 2003
Pigged out last night... I don't really know what happened, but I felt like I simply couldn't get enough food in me... I even drove to the store at 10pm and bought ice cream. Now I feel bad... really bad, and not just mentally either.
I'm not going to dwell on this... that's what all the "advice" web sites and books say. Just forget it, and go on. What I AM going to do, and I've already started this morning, is to make the drastic changes to my eating habits that I've been thinking about for awhile. Maybe this is just what works for me... I failed every time I tried to "cut back" on smoking, but quitting outright worked. Same with exercise... walking a little, or using the treadmill, didn't work, but joining the Wellness Center and going EVERY day is working great. So, I guess I'm an "all or nothing" guy and I'll just accept that and work with it. Here's my NEW eating habits.
|
May 9th, 2003
Worked out with wife, daughter, sister-in-law and her fiance... seems like everyone is joining the Wellness Center!
Accepted a job as Maintenance guy at a local retirement complex. I'm hoping this will further my weight loss efforts by getting me out of the house, and keep me moving all day. I hope I can do the job... part of me thinks I may be taking this step too early. Guess I'll find out....
|
May 9th, 2003(cont:)
As is usual with me, I got carried away with the exercising and added all those machines when I really shouldn't have. So, I've decided to be smart (for once!) and remove the Abdominal twist, Crunch, and lower back machine and just get a great workout without killing myself. I feel like my workout right now is just about perfect... I'm very tired when it's done, but I can still function. I'm also working out at night, and I like that better. Still no scale to weigh in... wish I knew how I was doing...
|
May 31st 2003
Been awhile since I updated this... been busy, busy, busy... very hectic....
Finally got to weigh in on the 28th... down to 364. Frankly, I'm amazed since I haven't been rigidly sticking to my diet. I guess my new job keeps me going so much I can't help but lose weight. I'm barely able to do this job... so much walking involved, and that's what kills my knees and feet, so I hurt quite a bit. Funny how working out at the wellness center doesn't hurt, and even helps the knees feel better.
|
May 31st 2003 (cont:)
Seems like I'm being tested... knees, feet, an absessed tooth (and no dental insurance), the "trots", a sore throat and fever that lasted a week, and a shattered toenail that had to be cut out by the doctor... sheesh! I know God will never put on me more than I can handle, but I am praying to let him know I'm fully loaded! Still having trouble sleeping, and it must be psychological since I slept great last night... no work today eh...
OK, positive notes... Sore throat, fever, trots, and absessed tooth are gone, toe is recovering nicely, and knee feels comparitively well since I finally got some more Bextra and had a GREAT workout yesterday... OK, ONWARD!!
|
June 11th, 2003
Weighed in at 360.5, so that's officially -
50 pounds lost
in 134 days which is 19 weeks, so that's 2.6 pounds a week.
Knee still bothers me, but not killing me like it used to. Feet hurt, and I'm pretty sure it's because my feet are SO much smaller that my shoes no longer provide support. Feeling better all the time, and workouts are going well. Was stuck at 363 for awhile, but I started losing weight again when I switched from eating 300 calories every 3-4 hours, to eating 3 meals and 2 small snacks a day... I'm not as hungry either... Guess that "Eat 5 small meals a day" theory don't work for me...
|
|
July 1st, 2003
Weighed in Monday the 30th of June at 356.5. Have decided to try weight watchers, as it sounds easier than counting calories. I didn't like the "look" of the meeting I checked out, so I just ordered some books from Ebay, and will do it myself. Right foot hurting pretty bad... I think it's my shoes. My knee has some good days and bad days....
|
July 1st, 2003 (cont:)
Decided to work out right after work... just go home, leave the van running, change clothes, and go straight to the wellness center. Seems if I try and go after dinner, I rarely go at all, and I tried working out early in the morning... Yeeech! Forget it. Right after work seems to work just fine.
|
July 8th, 2003
Got the weight wathers books on Sat., and studied them all weekend. Yesterday was day one. I had 21 "points" at the end of the day, and was never hungry at all... not even close actually. I'm "allowed" between 32 - 37 points. It was nice not being hungry... we'll see at the end of the week whether I lose any more weight or not. Decided to take my old gout medicine (Endomethacin, I think) to see if it helped my foot. It did... feels a lot better. The Wellness Center is going to be hiring.... hmmmm.... :)
|
July 10th, 2003
Finally!!
I have been waiting for the day when I could weigh in on the standard scale at the Wellness Center, and today was it!! 352 pounds! Sure felt good... whew... really been looking forward to this day, and I feel like I've accomplished a goal I set for myself.
Onward!!
Next goal? Hmm... gotta think about this... I'm tempted to set a goal of 100 pounds lost, but that might be too far away to be a real goal... Naaaa...
100 pounds... Next goal!
|
July 20th, 2003
Weighed in Friday and Saturday at 345... had to weigh in a couple of days to make sure I hadn't just lost a bunch of water weight... seems like losing 7 pounds in 8 days is waaay too fast eh? Been working real hard, and doing lots of yardwork and cleaning and stuff, so maybe that's why. I've also been turning my nose up at food... hope that's a new trend! Lunch yesterday was a chicken leg/thigh and boiled potatoes, and I only ate about 1/2 the chicken and about 1/3 the boiled taters... Me?... Leave food on the plate??? Who'd a thunk that! :)
|
July 20th, 2003 (cont:)
Talked to the guys at the Wellness Center again... They wanted to hire me! They could only offer 30 hours a week, and no benefits, so I had to turn them down. On Saturday, they offered me part time work that'll not interfere with my full time job, so I accepted. I start Tuesday the 22nd. 1 1/2 hours in the AM Mon-Fri, 3 hours at night on Wednesday, and 1-2 Saturdays a month.... so... that's 58 hours a month.
Who'd a thunk it... going from nearly unable to walk to the mailbox and back to working 2 jobs!
Needless to say, I LIKE IT!!
(Hope I'm not overdoing it... I'm a little nervous about that)
|
July 28th, 2003
Today was my 6 month progress evaluation at the Wellness center. Here's the score:
Weight - 342.5
BP - 134/78
Pulse - 66
Body Fat - 32.6%
Bicep - 171/2"
Waist - 53 1/8"
Calf - 20"
Flexibility - 19 1/2
So, after 6 months I have:
Lost 68.5 pounds and lost 10.3% body fat and lost 8 7/8" off my waist. My workout clothes (sweats) have gone from a size 5X shorts to a 1X and T-shirt from 5X to 3X
My flexibility really seems to be improving a lot now. I knew that flexibility takes a long time to improve, but I can now put all 5 fingers on the floor with my feet shoulder-width apart.
|
Aug 19th 2003
A 14 year old girl driving her mother to get more oxygen in her O2 tank ran a red light and totalled my truck. I never wear a seat belt, but God was with me and I put the seat belt on before I left the parking lot, and 3 minutes later I got hit. Thank you Lord! Smashed out the drivers side door with my head, and bent the door several inches outward with my body. My knee is sore, and I had some problems with my vision in my left eye but all seems OK now...
|
Sep 5th, 2003
Have had some sort of virus for 3 days now, but have stuck to my eating plan... I missed 2 days of workouts, but went today even though I still don't feel well. Weighed in at 331, so I've now lost 80 pounds. I've made it all week without eating after dinner... sure works for weight loss, but man it's so hard to do! I'm hoping I can keep it up until my body figgers out it aint getting any more food after dinner.
|
Sep 5th (cont:)
Wanna talk about my workout, since a lot has changed and I haven't been updating that part of this web page...
I now do 30 minutes of Interval Training on the bike, level 2, then level 4. 2 weeks ago I added 15 minutes on the treadmill, and so far my knee seems to be holding out ok, although still painful. I still do biceps, triceps, pecs, and shoulders on the weight machines, and have started taking the Abs and Flexibility Classes on Monday and Thursday.
|
Oct 9th, 2003
Well, lost my job after being treated like a dog by the HBIC... working more hours at the Wellness Center now, thank God for them... My eating has gone all wrong... guess I've lost my motivation after hurting my lower back and getting fired the next day... Weighed in at 335, so haven't gained back too much, and I have kept my workouts going well... Starting a weight class put on by the Wellness Center on Monday, and hopefully this will light my fuse again... Looking for a new job....
|
Jan 18th, 2004
Been a long while... I lost all my motivation and am back up to 360.... I feel like crap again, and my knee is really hurting. Haven't been to the gym in forever... they even took my picture down... that kinda hurt... New job at Geico started Oct 27th, and all the stress that goes along with that. I gotta start again... but just can't deal with a diet and and a new job and a lot of other things that are stressing me right now...
New job is sitting on my fat butt all day, so this isn't helping either...
My boss is a 28 year old black female with an attitude, my neighbor is a psycho and I have had to call the police several times and animal control on his 5 dogs barking at all hours, my wife treats me like an unwanted house guest, I just got over the flu I had for 12 days, and as the weight goes back on I hurt more and more. Pretty much sums it up...
So, worrying about what I eat and getting to the gym has taken a back seat... I guess I should just start from scratch again, and just start going to the gym again... then worry about the food part later...
A loving supportive women/homelife would sure help, but the reality is that I am on my own, and need to deal with this myself....
I should focus on what I have, not what I don't have... I have a good job and I have a gym membership... Build from that I guess....
|
Jan 22nd 2004
Went to the gym today to get started back on the right road... the guy who owns the gym said that I said something about him to the other owner and he was mad... so I no longer have a gym membership... I'll probably go to work tomorrow and be told I don't have job. Came home and ate 4 slices of pizza and 10 bbq wings followed by a bag of Reeces mini cups... I sure feel great now... FTS...
|
Jan 28th
Talked to the co-owner of the wellness center...and I am welcome back and I get to even work for them 1/2 a Saturday a month! There's a bright light at the end of the tunnel and it aint a train! Last 4 days I have been improving my eating, and am now taking my food to work instead of eating at the cafeteria, and I am trying to adjust again to the decreased food amount... I am looking forward to going back to the gym starting tomorrow.....
