About the Mangler....
Hi
I'm Marc Phillips, and I started Custom WoodCrafts after 20+ years of working with wood as a part time income producer and hobby.
My wife saw me steambending some Oak strips into Basket Handles one day and commented "Looks like you're mangling the wood!"... and I've been The WoodMangler ever since!
I've been in the US Army (1972 - 1975) and the US Coast Guard (1979 - 1993) and numerous jobs... but always the woodworking was there. Commercial fisherman, cross country Truck Driver, Sales Manager, Construction, Plant Manager, Yacht sales, Captain of Towing/salvage vessels, yachts, and Casino boats, Instructor for a major USCG Captains Licensing School, Operations Manager... you name it, I've probably done it. The thing that finally pushed me over the edge and made me start Custom WoodCrafts as a full time business occured when I was an Instructor for a Captains Licensing School. The owners son came out of a rehab facility and needed a job... so the owner gave him mine. I decided not to work for anyone else ever again. Now, I sink or swim totally on my own merits... and that's the way I like it!
I was born and raised in Southern California, in the Orange County area. I married (my second marriage) a wonderful southern gal from Georgia, and we spent 2 years in So Cal, a couple of years in Florida, and then we moved "home" to Georgia in April 2002. You know.... if Mama ain't happy, NOBODY'S happy!
So, here I am in the heart of Georgia working my wood, doin the best I can with what I got, and hoping to keep making a living doing what I love.... Mangling that wood!
