In the year After Colony 180, the Wing Zero project had been abandoned strictly due to the overwhelming amount of power and destructiveness it would possess. Despite this, the 5 later Gundams had been constructed based upon the Wing Zero since the original developers of the Wing Zero were the same 5 Gundam scientists. Hence, the Wing Zero could be considered as an ancestor of the 5 Gundams.
However, 15 years later, the data for the Wing Zero was rediscovered by Quatre Raberba Winner. This occurred as Quatre fell upon this information while examining the database where his Gundam Sandrock had been built. With the use of his family's vast resources, he was able to resurrect and bring the Wing Zero to life.

Showing a strong resemblance to the Wing Gundam, the Wing Zero also stresses the idea of versatility but has the resources to push all of its capabilities to a much higher level. First, its primary weapon is a Twin Buster Rifle which is more than twice as powerful as the Wing Gundam's and can also be split into two to be fired simultaneously in each hand. Added to this, the Twin Buster Rifle can fire a large number of shots as compared to the three shots for the Wing Gundam's. For back up fire, the Wing Zero can depend on its head-mounted Machine Cannons as well as its shoulder-mounted Vulcans. When the time comes to fight up close and personal, the Wing Zero can often rely on the beam sabers stored in its left shoulder. Like the Wing Gundam, Wing Zero can also transform into a "neo bird mode" to protect itself during re-entry into the earth's atmosphere and allowing it to travel vast distances over land and space in a shorter amount of time.

One major key feature of the Wing Zero, though, is its cockpit system called the "Zero System." This system enables its pilot to experience heightened senses and strategic input according to the various battle situations around him. As a result of this oneness between suit and pilot, the pilot receives a loss of fear for death which further enhances their abilities to the limit. However, a major downside of the system is that the pilot may become overwhelmed by the confusion of battle and, in turn, lose control of him/herself. This usually then results in a force which is a threat to all those around him including his own friends and family. After passing through the hands of all the Gundam pilots, including Zechs Merquise, the only pilot who had been capable of fully mastering this system and ultimately became its final owner was Heero Yuy.
