The Psyche processor plays an understated but enabling role in the series. Part of it's charm, I think, is that this mod chip does something unusual to a computer to bring its real world user closer to the Wired world. Nobody actually knows *the full extent* of its ability. It's also a device rumored about on the Wired, rarely seen by the public, and is thought to be the work of a shadowy group called the Knights.

It was difficult to get understandable reference images of the Psyche, as there were variations of its top's appearance in the series. My guess is that either the animators didn't fully understand the Psyche's shape, it was drawn by several people, the animators wanted to save time when it was shown at different distances and angles... or they got sloppy. Anyhow, this is my best guess on how the series creator wanted it to really look like.

One general question about the Psyche is if this is the processor's top or bottom. Also, just what are those resistor-like things?!? Unlike resistors, they are connected only on one end. Surprisingly, these things are connected to a wire which *goes through a hole in the processor's housing* to some unknown part!

This alternate version has a darker and more hip feel.

Like the dark Advanced Portable Navi 2 desktop below, I created a fractal image using MandelBrowser 3.0. Yup, the basic shape is a fractal--it's the fractal's outer region using the "decomposition" process. The patterns and lines were from Photoshop's glowing edges filter (built-in) and radioAntartica filter (Kang's filter set). I reused the Wired pattern from my Advanced Portable Navi desktop and placed it within the word "Psyche".

Throughout Serial Experiments Lain, several people are shown using a portable "Navi", which is a handheld device used to read e-mail (among other things.) This portable navi, which is an advanced version, is seen in the series.

Similar to the Advanced Portable Navi 1 desktop, this version has a different background with some interesting and subtle elements--they're on the left side and can't really be seen in the preview. And yes, it goes with the show's "hidden themes."

Throughout Serial Experiments Lain, several people use a desktop "Navi", which is a computer specially designed to access the Wired (which is like the Internet), read e-mail, play network games, and more.

This desktop Navi is used by a character in the series, and it's presented here in the format of an ad for Tachibana Labs (a maker of computers, as seen in the series.) It's actually a parody on Apple--which itself is parodied (or glorified) in the series.

The creators of Lain are Apple Computer fans, and have incorporated various tidbits of Apple history throughout the show--even basing its computers and software on those created by Apple.

Apple's marketing slogan, "think different", has been used to promote the Macintosh as a computer suited to creative people--its users, by association, share characteristics of famous people (seen in Apple ads and posters) who have changed the world by "thinking different."
