LATELY

by Lajla

-     Have you ever felt

A breeze hit your heart

Like the wind was

Blowing it apart

Had you spinning

Like a merry-go-round

She was awaken by sun lights hitting her eyelids and birds singing. It wasn’t everyday you had sun shining in Ireland.

As she opened her eyes and looked around the room, her eyes fell on an empty spot next to her. She spent yet another night alone in a big bed, in a bed she used to share with her loved one.

She ignored all the birds singing outside and children’s laughter in the park across the street, as she closed her eyes again. Everyone seemed to be happy that day……everyone but her. She knew this was going to be yet another lonely and cold day for her.

I wish that I could
Weather any storm

But I guess it was heartbreak

From the norm

It was a day

That I will always remember

The saddest day

In November

All the memories came to her once again. His smiling face, his beautiful hazel eyes, his strong muscular arms, his lips, lips which she used to kiss every day…… It all came back to her.

As she was lying in the bed, she remembered all the good times they had, all countless hours they spent together enjoying each other’s touch……and then that day. The day she couldn’t forget, no matter how much she tried. It was a day in November. It always brought sadness to her beautiful, big brown eyes. Tears were, once again, falling down her cheeks, as she remembered his words that day……

*flashback*

-          “I’m sorry, sweetie, it’s not you, it’s me. I need some time on my own. And I think you need some time to

think it all through.”

-           “But Shane, honey, I don’t have anything to think about. I love you, and you love me too. And that’s the

only thing that matters. You……you do love me, don’t you?” – Christina asked carefully.

-          “Chris, baby, of course I love you. But my feelings for you have changed. They’re not what they’re used to

be. I’m sorry, I don’t want to hurt you.” – he said taking her little, fragile hands in his strong ones.

-          “But you are hurting me. By breaking up with me.” – tears in her eyes threatened to fall any second.

-          “Baby, you deserve someone better than me. I can’t give you all you need.”

-          “The only thing I need is you to be here with me. Nothing else, just you. That’s all I need.” – she said,

tears now falling down her cheeks.

-          “Chris, I’m sorry, I just can’t.” – he said getting up and walking over to the window.

-          “There’s someone else, isn’t there?” – she said suddenly.

-          “I don’t think it makes any difference.” – he simply said, not even looking at her.

-          “It does. I think I deserve to know the truth. Shane?” – he looked at her. – “Is there someone else?” – he

looked away. He couldn’t do that to her. But she was right, she deserved more than lies.

Lately, I’ve been watching you

Been thinking ‘bout you, baby

And everything you do

Just sittin’ away

Watching the days go by

-          “Yes.” – was all he said.

Christina started crying, she sank down on the floor. She couldn’t help it anymore as she broke down. She was losing her one and only true love over someone else. What did she do to deserve that?

-          “Who is she?” – she said after few minutes of her crying, and Shane doing absolutely nothing to comfort

her. It hurt him seeing her like that, but he made a choice, and couldn’t go back anymore. His heart made a choice.

-          “Chris, it doesn’t matter.”

-          “It does to me. Just tell me, please.” – she said desperately.

Shane turned away to look out the window. He couldn’t stand watching her face when he tells her. But he knew he has to. After a year of them being together, after a year of Shane telling Christina his love for her is forever, she deserved to know the truth, no matter how painful it was.

I’m on my knees

Praying God help me please

Bring my baby back

Bring him right back to me

If loving you is right

I don’t ever want to be wrong

-          “It’s Nicola.” – he said quietly. He could hear Christina gasping and then her sobs.

-          “How could she……how could you??” – she screamed suddenly getting up and going over to Shane. She just

stood there behind him with disbelief in her eyes, waiting for an answer.

-          “I don’t know……it just happened……” – he quietly said, still not turning around to face her. He didn’t have

the courage to see the girl he once loved with all his heart in all that pain.

-          “Things like that don’t just happen! You gotta want it, for God’s sake!” – she said sarcastically. Tears just

wouldn’t stop falling. – “She……my best friend, Shane. My best friend! How could you??”

-          “I’m sorry, baby, I……I don’t know, I can’t explain it. Just…… I’m sorry.” – he finally turned around and

looked at her. His heart broke in million little pieces when he saw all that pain in her eyes. He knew he hurt her deeply. And he felt like crying with her, he couldn’t stand watching his once lover, best friend and the girl he was prepared to give it all up for, hurting so much.

-          “Go……just go……please……” – she said not even looking at him, as she sank down on the floor, leaning

against the wall and burying her head in her hands.

He didn’t say a thing, he just went over to the front door, and just as he was about to step out, he stopped. He turned around, took one last look at Chris, his Chris, and said his final words……

-          “I’m sorry……”

*flashback ends*

Christina turned her head to look at the picture frame placed on the night table next to the bed. It was her and Shane, on their one year anniversary. They looked so in love, as if nothing could ever break their love. She laughed bitterly. How wrong can one be? She couldn’t take it anymore, the memories were too painful. She couldn’t stand the thought of him being in her arms. And she? How could she do that to her? Her best friend since they were 2 years old. Well, now she knew what friendship meant to Nicola. And what love meant to Shane.

Instead I drown myself with tears

Sittin’ here singing another love song

Lately, I’ve been torn apart

I wish you wouldn’t have broke my heart

-          “Why, Shane? Why?” – she whispered, as tears made way down her cheeks, already wet of all those tears.

She knew Shane would never come back to her, she knew that, but still. It hurt her deeply knowing he was with her somewhere, happy, while she was crying over him……

-          “Why did you break my heart, Shane?”
