FOOL AGAIN

by Lucia

Kat and myself walked through Dublin town centre, stopping every now and then, to allow myself to be dragged into yet another shop.

“ Whose idea was it to go shopping?” I asked, as Kat searched frantically through the rack of clothes she was looking at.

“ Mine.” Kat replied.

“ And why may I ask?”

“ I had to get you out of the house, for a couple of hours, you’ve been moping around ever since, well you know since you found them together, and I couldn’t let you sit on the sofa, stuffing your face with popcorn while pretending to watch ‘Titanic‘ again, so the girls and I thought it would be good if I took you out shopping, and find us some new clothes, so we can go to that new club their opening tonight, Kat said, pulling a black and white top of the rack and holding it up to herself, “ What do you think?” she asked.

“ Lovely, it really suits you.” I replied not really taking any notice of anyone else, as memories came flooding back…

~* FLASHBACK*~

Mark had been away on tour with the rest of the lads, for several months, and he was due back any day now.

I’d been shopping in town with Kat for some things for this party she was having to celebrate her 21st birthday.

The first thing I noticed as we pulled up outside my house (which I shared with Mark) was that Mark’s car was parked in the drive-way.

“ What’s Mark doing back so early?” asked Kat.

“ I don’t know!”

“ Maybe he was going to surprise you or something” suggested Kat.

“ And park his car outside where anyone can see it, he’s not that dense Kat!” I said, staring intently at the house.

“ Are you gonna go in or what?” asked Kat, getting out of the car.

“ Yeah, just hang on a second.” I replied, gathering my various shopping bags, from the backseat. Kat started to walk up to the path to the front door, as I locked the car.

“ Kat, I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.” I said as I unlocked the front door,  and we both walked in.

“ Don’t worry, he’s probably hiding somewhere with a huge bouquet of flowers, and an engagement ring, to prove his undying love for you.” Kat joked walking into the kitchen, to put the kettle on. I walked through the kitchen into the living room, and into the study to see if Mark was there, which he wasn’t. I walked back to the kitchen, to find Kat, looking uncertainly at the stairs.

“ He might be upstairs.” She suggested.

“ Yeah, he might be, I’ll just go and check..” I said starting to climb the stairs. When I reached the first floor, I walked straight to our bedroom, and as I opened the door, I felt my heart shatter into tiny pieces as I witnessed the scene before me. Mark was in bed with Shane’s fiancée Mary. I was fixed to the spot, I couldn’t move but I knew I had to when Mark started to stir and woke from his sleep.

“ CK? It’s not what it looks like…” said Mark, hurriedly getting up and pulling his clothes on.

“ Oh so what were you doing in bed with one of my best mates ….. one of your best mates fiancée?” I asked sarcastically, the tears streaming down my face, before running downstairs out of the front door. Mark following close behind me.

“ CK, where are you going? We need to talk about this.” Mark said following me out to my car.

“ No Mark, we don’t need to talk about this, because I’m leaving, it’s over and that’s all I have to say to you.” I said, getting into my car, and driving away, ignoring all of Mark’s protests.

“ Earth to CK! Can you hear me?” asked Kat, waving her hands in front of my face.

“ What? Sorry Kat I was thinking about stuff..” I said, embarrassed that I hadn’t heard a single word she’d said!

“ Let me guess, does it begin with M, end with K and have AR in the middle?” She asked giggling.

“ What are you on about Kat?” I asked beginning to lose my patience.

“ M…A...R...K!” Kat said slowly, smiling happily to herself as I began to blush.

“ It just came back to me, when I found them…” I said, the tears threatening to fall, “ It’s really hot in here, I’m gonna wait outside.” I walked outside, and leant against the wall sighing with relief, that I’d managed to grab a few moments of quiet to myself, not that it lasted for long.

“ CK!?” I heard someone shouting my name, and cursed them silently. I looked up and saw Shane walking towards me. He’d coped with it all pretty well, considering him and Mary were engaged, not any more though.

“ Shay! How are you?” I asked, pulling him into a hug when he reached me.

“ Fine thanks, how about you?” He asked, smiling as we pulled away.

“ I’m coping, I suppose!” I replied, “ Except Kat wants to drag me to this new club tonight and I really, really don’t want to go.” I added, feeling slightly depressed at the thought of watching everyone else have a nice time, while I just sit in a corner being well you guessed it… depressed.

“ Oh, well how about I come round to yours tonight, and we can watch a video or something. Tell her you promised me ages ago, and you can’t back out of it now, even if it’s only a video with Shane!”  he said, pleased with his ‘great’ plan.

“ yeah, that’s a great plan.” I said, really pleased I’d found a way out of going.

“ Hi Shane! How are you?” cried Kat, as she saw Shane.

“ I’m fine thanks, you?” replied Shane.

“ Great. Apart from her moping around the house all the time, she really needs a night out, which is why we’re taking her out tonight to that new club in the City Centre.” Kat said, which made Shane smile.

“ Oh Kat, I can’t make it tonight, I made plans with Shane ages ago, and I can’t back out of it now..” I said sincerely, trying hard not to laugh with the look of disappointment on Kat’s face, and the huge grin on Shane’s.

“Oh.. well never mind, we’ll do it some other time then!” said Kat, regaining her usual permanent grin.  Shane smiled and ran his fingers through his hair.

“ Well I guess I’ll see you later then, say around 7?” he asked me.

“ Yeah that’ll be great, but do you have to go now?” I asked, hoping he’d stay, to protect me from the torture of being dragged around another 50,000 shops.

“ I have to be at the studio in about an hour, with the rest of the lads..” he said.

“ How about a coffee first?” I asked, then added under my breath,

“ Please don’t leave me alone with her, she’s gone major shopaholic today!” Shane laughed at this and agreed to a coffee.

10 minutes later, we were all sitting in a small café, nursing hot cups of coffee, laughing about this and that.

“ So how are the rest of the lads doing?” asked Kat.

“ Bryan, well you know Bryan, he’s trying to keep everyone’s spirits up at the moment being the joker he is, Kian and Nicky are doing great with everything, especially Georgina and Cassy! And Mark is really down and depressed at the moment, he’s only got his mind on one thing and one thing only…” said Shane, smiling at me, “ He really wants to make things up with you CK, why don’t you just speak to him!?” asked Shane.

“ You weren’t there, you didn’t find them, it makes me sick thinking about it..” I said, the tears welling up.

“ I know CK, but he really regrets what he did, he was drunk, Mary wasn’t but he was, he didn’t know what he was doing, you don’t when your drunk!”

“ I know Shane, I’m sorry but I’m gonna go home, see you guys later!” I said getting up, and flashing them both smiles, before leaving the café.

When I arrived home, I found a single red rose, lying on the door step, without a note or anything. I picked it up, and smiled. I knew it was from Mark, but I didn’t care, it was still a sweet gesture. I walked through the front door, and bent down to pick up the mail, that was lying on the floor.

“ Bills… more bills… junk… and more junk, what an exciting life I lead” I muttered to myself. I placed the mail on the side table in the hall, and walked through into the kitchen. The house usually was alive and happy, but today it seemed miserable and silent. I tried to push this thought to the back of my head by turning on the radio, and singing along to it.  I was shocked when I heard what the DJ was saying..

“ This is a first ladies and gentlemen, we have Mark from Westlife on the line, because he wants to say something to a very special lady in his life, take it away Mark…”

“ CK, I just wanted to say I’m really sorry for everything that’s happened, please forgive me, the guys are here with me and we’re gonna sing to you CK, I know it’s one of your favourites, here’s Fool Again…” said Mark.

“ 1, 2, 3…” I heard Bryan counting in, in the background.

Baby I know the story,

I’ve seen the picture,

It’s written all over your face,

Tell me what’s the secret,

That you’ve been hiding,

And who’s gonna take my place

Shane’s voice sang down the line.

 I should’ve seen it coming,

I should’ve read the signs,

Anyway, I guess it’s over

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

I thought this love would never end,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

And I who thought you were my friend,

How was I to know,

You never told me

It sounded really good, I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. Were they tears of happiness or sadness? Both I think.

 Baby you should’ve told me,

When you were lonely,

When you needed me to be there,

Sadly you never gave me,

Too many chances,

To show you how much I care

I should’ve seen it coming,

I should’ve read the signs.

Anyway, I guess it’s over

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

I thought this love would never end,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

And I who thought you were my friend,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

About the pain and the tears,

Oooohhhhh, If I could I would,

Turn back the time,

Oh yeah,

I should’ve seen it coming,

I should’ve read the signs,

Anyway, I guess it’s over,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

I thought this love would never end,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

And I who thought you were my friend,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

I thought this love would never end,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

Can’t believe that I’m the fool again,

And I who thought you were my friend,

How was I to know,

You never told me,

As the song finished Mark spoke again..

“ CK, I love you from the bottom of my heart, I always will, no matter what happens! All I want to know is if you’ll forgive me, please ring in, I’ll be listening…”

“ That was Westlife ladies and gentlemen, singing live for CK, you lucky lady, it’s not everyday you get one of the world’s largest boy bands serenading you over the air! And CK, make sure you call in with your answer, cos’ we here want to know how it turns out!” The DJ babbled on about how lucky I was, but all I could do was cry my eyes out. I walked into the living room and curled up on the sofa and fell asleep, almost as soon as my head hit the cushiony surface.

I was woken up by the sound of the doorbell. I glanced at the clock on the mantelpiece, it read 7:30. I realised it must be Shane, and got up quickly and ran to answer the door. As I opened the door, I saw a very worried looking Shane, with a huge bunch of flowers, popcorn and a video.

“ I’m really sorry Shane! I was asleep! How long have you been waiting?” I asked, taking the popcorn and the video from him, and walking through into the kitchen.

“ About 15 minutes, it doesn’t matter though, I was just worried about you, cos’ you weren’t answering the door, and you didn’t ring in earlier…” he said trailing off, “ You did hear us on the radio, didn’t you?” he asked.

“ Of course I did, I was going to phone, but I fell asleep.” I said, tipping the popcorn into a huge bowl.

“ oh, Mark was devastated when you didn’t phone in.” Shane said grabbing a handful of popcorn and shoving it in his mouth.

“ Was he?” I asked, feeling really depressed that I’d upset him.

“ yeah… he… was” said Shane through the mouthful of popcorn, “ These flowers are for you, by the way!” said Shane, handing them to me.

“ who are they from?” I asked.

“ my guess is Mark, they were on the doorstep when I arrived.”

“ there lovely, I’ll just go and put them in water” I said, moving into the living room to find a vase. When I walked back into the kitchen, Shane was still busy eating the popcorn, which made me smile. As I filled the vase with water, the doorbell rang.

“ Shane can you get that?” I asked, as I arranged the flowers in the vase. Shane walked to the door, and answered it. I could hear him whispering to the other person.

“ Shane, who is it?” I shouted. I became a bit anxious when there wasn’t a reply, so I walked out into the hall. I was quite surprised to see Bryan and Nicky, standing on my doorstep.

“ What are you guys doing here?” I asked.

“ We are here to whisk you away from this guy here to a secret location!” said Bryan.

“ For a surprise!” said Nicky.

“ No way are you guys taking me anywhere!” I said laughing, at the ‘hurt’ look on Bryan’s face.

“ Well, your coming with us no matter what, so if you won’t walk, we’ll have to find another way, won’t we guys!?” said Bryan. Shane and Nicky nodded in agreement.

“ Sure you will!” I said

“ Fine I’ll carry you then!” said Bryan

“ You do that!” I said laughing, not thinking Bryan was serious. But Bryan was true to his word, and picked me up and carried me out to the car.

“ Bryan, put me down!” I said as we reached the car.

“ Ok, ok! My arms are about to break anyway!”

“ Oi!” I said thumping him on his arm. I got in the back of the car and was closely followed by Shane, whilst Nicky got in the front with Bryan.

“ Are you guys gonna tell me where your taking me?” I asked.

“ ummmmm… nope!” said Nicky. Bryan started the car, and pulled out onto the road.

Bryan had been driving for about half an hour, when he came to a stop outside an empty looking pub. We all got out of the car. Bryan and Nicky led me into the pub. It was almost pitch black, except for a light in the far corner of the pub, which was above a small stage. Kian and Mark were standing on the stage, waiting for the others to join them. I caught Mark’s eye and he smiled at me, probably happy that I hadn’t refused to come. I sat at a small table, next to the stage, right in front of Mark.

Bryan, Nicky and Shane, joined Kian and Mark on the stage.

Mark took his mike and spoke. “ CK, the guys brought you here tonight, so I could tell you how much I love you face-to-face and hope that you can forgive me for what I did. But first we’re going to sing to you again, here it is, it’s Everybody Knows..”

It's never too hard to find the words
The words to say to you
You make it so easy just to talk
The way we talk things through
You're never too tired to care
You're never too busy
Just to be there
And when I smile my feelings show
So everybody, everybody knows

And everybody knows this love's for sure
There's no searching anymore
And no one ever doubts you're mine, I'm yours
It's the one thing that's for sure
And everyone we know says all the time
They wish they had a love like yours and mine
And everybody knows

Even people in love said I'm a fool
For loving you too much
But we were the exception to the rule
For us it's not enough
They used to say we're out of touch
Now everyone wants to be like us
Not afraid to let it show
So everybody, everybody knows

And everybody knows this love's for sure
There's no searching anymore
And no one ever doubts you're mine, I'm yours
It's the one thing that's for sure
And everyone we know says all the time
They wish they had a love like yours and mine
And everybody knows

Like yours and mine
That bridges all divides
A love to conquer time
When everybody knows

And everybody knows this love's for sure
There's no searching anymore
And no one ever doubts you're mine, I'm yours
It's the one thing that's for sure
And everyone we know says all the time
They wish they had a love like yours and mine
And everybody knows

And everybody knows this love's for sure
There's no searching anymore
And no one ever doubts you're mine, I'm yours
It's the one thing that's for sure
And everyone we know says all the time
They wish they had a love like yours and mine
And everybody knows

And everybody knows this love's for sure
There's no searching anymore
And no one ever doubts you're mine, I'm yours
It's the one thing that's for sure
And everyone we know says all the time
They wish they had a love like yours and mine
And everybody knows

As they sung the last line I felt fresh tears fall silently down my face. Mark stepped down from the stage, and kneeled down on one knee in front of me.

“ CK, I love you so much, what I did was a mistake and I regret it so much, all I want to know is will you forgive me?” he asked.

“ Of course I’ll forgive you stupid, I love you!” I replied. Mark grinned and pulled me into a deep kiss.  When we pulled away, the other lads were grinning at me and Mark.

“ And I have one more question to ask you…” said Mark reaching into his back pocket, and pulling out a small box, “ Will you make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?” he asked opening the ring box to reveal a diamond engagement ring. I looked at Mark, for a couple of seconds, which seemed to me like an eternity.

“ Yes!” I said. Mark grinned, and pulled me into another kiss whilst the lads swamped us in a group hug.
