If You Love Something...> chapters 15-16

“How did it go with Ashley?” asked Shane to Bryan who was sitting behind him.

“Fantastic,” replied Bryan beaming from ear to ear as he told their account of the previous day. Nicky on the other hand, in front of Shane, was reading a newspaper and listening to the music. There were not many people in this flight so each of them could have two seats to themselves.

“Earth to Mark,” said Kian who was hovering above him.

“What?” he asked annoyed. He was in no mood to talk. All he wanted was to go home and be in a familiar surrounding. The band was on their way back to Dublin. From there Mark, Shane and Kian are going to next connecting flight to Sligo. Maybe the band should have a private jet soon as it would make it easier for them. This thought shocked Mark. He and Samantha just broke up and he was thinking of private planes!

“I asked you how was your day with Sam?” asked Kian.

            “Fine,” he replied, irritated.

“How’s she doing?” Kian continued asking.

“Fine, alright,” snapped Mark. This startled Kian and got the other lads attention.

            “You alright mate?” asked Shane.

“Yeah, yeah,” he mumbled. Sometimes he wished Shane would not be so considerate, it makes Mark think twice before lashing out at him. From the corner of his eye he saw Shane shrugging his shoulders to Kian.

“He’s just grumpy he couldn’t be with Sam longer,” offered Nicky. Yeah right! If only he knew. Nicky however, was looking forward to see Georgina ever since the moment they left Ireland. Mark didn’t want to tell them that it’s over between him and Samantha. Absence makes the heart grow absent he thought. They’ll find out soon from Bryan anyway. Though he knows that the rest off the lads are just concerned, he didn’t want them butting in, not until he himself processed what has happened.

After he left her, he went straight back to the hotel and stayed in his room until it was time to leave. The rest thought that he spent the night at Sam’s. He couldn’t feel a thing. No guilt. No sadness. No happiness. No relief. No anger. No hate. They had an unique friendship maybe they shouldn’t have spoilt it by wanting something more. It was a mistake. Samantha and Mark, they were not meant to be.

It was just too much was happening in such short time. He expected the band to start slow but they just exploded in the music scene and everything had been a whirlwind ever since. Most of the time he loses track of the date and time and where they were. He felt like he was losing control.

How is it that Bryan and Ashley and Nicky and Georgina did it? What was their secret? Mark looked out the plane window. He knew he over reacted, if she said the guy from the cafe was her friend, then it’s her friend. The big question was what made him behave the way he did?

CHAPTER 16

            “Please?” asked Ashley.

            “No,” replied Samantha.

“Please? Pretty please?” Ashley was practically begging, “You’ll have fun.”

“I really don’t feel like it. I’m sorry,” she replied. Ashley gave up. Ashley was persuading Sam to go with her to a friend’s birthday party. The fact was she was worried about Samantha. She rarely goes out of the flat unless it was for classes. Most of the time she sits at home and looks out the window. She even began losing so much weight. Ashley sat beside her looking at her concerned.

“Why don’t you go ahead without me. I’ll be fine,” Samantha said. But Ashley knew better, she had caught Samantha crying more than once, which was a surprise since Samantha never cries, no matter how much things get tough. Her staying at home only gives her all the reason to cry. Ashley sighed and turned on the TV, she was finding for a channel to watch. One of the channels had an interview with Westlife. Ashley switched to another channel quickly hoping Samantha hadn’t noticed.

“Turn it back,” said Samantha. Ashley gave her an are-you-sure look. “I really want to see it.” Hesitantly Ashley turned back the channel. Samantha knew she shouldn’t be doing this. She should be doing everything she could to forget him not remember him. All of them looked well. She saw Mark smile straight to the camera and it pierced her heart. The interviewer asked some routine questions about the band she had heard numerous times but one question had her undivided attention.

Interviewer : There’s a rumor going around that you have a special girl in you life.

                     Care to elaborate?

Mark : (Smiling) Yeah, well we have been going out for a month now. Nothing very

serious, but who knows, sometime in the future, maybe…”

Samantha thought her heart stopped beating.

“Huh?” she couldn’t comprehend what Ashley was saying to her.

“Sam! Girl, are you Ok?” asked Ashley as she waved her hand in front of her eyes.

“Yeah,…I’m—“ Samantha managed to say, “I’m fine.”

“You’re unusually pale. Do you want to go to the doctors?” Ashley asked kneeling in front of her.

“No. No,” she said, “Can you get me some water?” She nodded and went to the kitchen.

“Look, Sam, I’m really sorry,” said Ashley trying to comfort Samantha as she handed her the water. Tears were flowing so fast from Samantha’s eyes.

“Did you know?” she asked softly through her tears after awhile.

“Yeah. Bry told me,” Ashley knew better than to lie to Samantha.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she barely whispered. She knew all too well. Ashley didn’t want to add the pain. Did Ashley think she wouldn’t have found of sooner or later? Samantha was probably the last person on earth to know about this.

“I thought if you didn’t know it would make it easier.” Hearing this she nodded and went to her room. She leaned against the door, hoping what she heard was a dream, no a nightmare. She caught a glance of herself in the mirror and saw how horrible she looked. Her eyes were bloodshot, hair dried and messy and her lips dry and cracked. They broke up for 38 days. For 38 days they had not spoken to each other.

She stood in front of the mirror and looked straight into her own eyes, “Get a grip Samantha. You have your life ahead of you. Start living it. He may be your friend for years but he broke your heart. He’s out partying with his new found love. Obviously you meant nothing to him. Don’t give Mark the satisfaction. You WILL NOT shed another tear for him, Samantha Micah you WILL carry on and you WILL get over him.” she said to herself with conviction. With this she felt a new resolve within her and she felt better than she had in days.

“Hey Ash,” called out Samantha from the open doorway, “which do you think I should wear for the party tonight?” as she held up two dresses against her.
