Crash and Burn> chapters 7-8

Dorothy suddenly felt very happy that I wasn't able to dance with Bryan anymore.

- Hey Bryan, can I take Kate's place?- she smiled at him cheekily.

- Of course you can, sweet cheeks!- Bryan said in his charming, Irish accent and smiled back at her. She gave me the 'I-love-when-he-calls-me-that' look and then they were off to the dance floor again.

As I turned around I noticed that Kian was no longer at the table- he was chatting up a nice looking girl at the bar and I could see that there was chemistry between them. Shane was still sitting at his place, looking very lonely and sad... It was such a depressing view!

Then there was Mark... 'How lucky can a girl get to have a guy like him?' I thought and smiled at him.

- Maybe we should step out? It's far too loud in here- I suggested and he just nodded.

As we went out, a warm summer breeze hit our faces. Although it was around midnight, it was still quite warm, as the last days in Poland were usually sunny and very hot.

We could still hear loud music coming out of the club while we started to walk, enjoying a warm, gentle wind for a few minutes. Surprisingly, I didn't feel uncomfortable at all, being there beside Mark in complete silence. I guess it was a good sign, because I've heard somewhere, that when you can just spend a few minutes in someone's presence in silence without feeling awkward, then you and this person have very big chances of becoming friends...

But still, Mark hasn't said a thing since we came out and I began to wonder if he really was going to speak to me. Just then I've heard "When You Say Nothing At All" coming out of the club. I smiled to myself and then laughed a little.

- What's the matter?- Mark snapped back to reality, looking at me in surprise.

- It's this song...- I made him stop and listen for a moment.

- Oh- he smiled – Ronan.

- Yes- I laughed again - You know Mark... maybe Ronan's right, but I don't think I can read your thoughts. It's not like 'you say it best when you say nothing at all'... at least not this time! You HAVE TO speak to me!

He let out a little laugh. - You know how to cheer me up, don't you?

- I'm trying- I smiled - I just can't believe that when I finally meet the famous Westlife lads, they all have love problems and are so depressed. I thought you were a bunch of unstoppable trouble makers!

- Usually we are...- Mark agreed and looked at me - but being in a band is not all about fun, you know? It's a very hard work first of all.

- I can imagine- I nodded and suddenly added -...and it makes relationships harder, doesn't it?

He didn't seem surprised that I hit the point. He just whispered - Yes, it does- and fell silent again.

I rolled my eyes. - MARK!!

- What?!

- Are you going to tell me what is it all about or not?!- he looked so helpless and frightened that I almost started to laugh.

- Oh yeah, sorry- he smiled shyly - It's just that...

- Go on...- I tried to encourage him to speak but he just sighed

- Nothing...

I wanted to shake him and finally make him speak, but just then he started again...

- Well, you know, it's all about...- and trailed off.

I swear, I began to have thoughts of killing him. If it wasn't for these few people passing us from time to time...

- Spit it out, for God's sake!- I almost shouted, but it actually worked. He began to talk and this time I was thinking, if he was ever going to stop...

- It's about Rae... Rachel... We've been together for five months now and I think she's the best thing that ever happened to me. I've never been so happy in my life...

We've met on some party in America... the moment I saw her I felt that we've got something in common.

I saw her for the first time in my life and I felt right there and then that I somehow already knew her.. It was an amazing feeling, you know? Like meeting your other half. I walked up to her, we started to chat and a week later we were already a couple. The next 4 months were like a dream becoming reality- we were inseparable, she went on the promo tour with us and we never had to miss each other. But then she said she had to live her own life, she wanted to start a job and continue her studies... I couldn't say no, it'd be unfair 'cause I knew she had her own dreams and they definitely weren't becoming reality while she was travelling with us all the time... Of course I missed her, all the time. But it was okay- we were calling each other every day and talking for hours... But three weeks ago she called me and said that it wasn't working for her anymore... I didn't know what she meant, I thought she just was in a lousy mood or something so I just said 'don't worry, I'm coming to see you in a week'...  and when I came to her it wasn't as it used to be- she hardly spoke to me, we hardly kissed...

I knew something was wrong, but we never talked about it, I think we just pretended that everything was all right... but it wasn't. It's still like that: we're still a couple, but when we talk on the phone, it's not as it used to be, we don't talk as we used to... I don't know what to do...- he stopped and looked me in the eyes.

Hearing all of this, said so honestly, I just didn't know what to say. I had a million thoughts in my head. First, I felt very sorry for him- I could imagine that loosing your 'other half' must have been painful and unbearable. But there was also this little sting of jealousy in me, that made me feel very low. 'You're just so pathetic, Kate' I thought to myself 'he's hurting and all you can think about is finding a way to be with him!'

Mark was still looking at me like he was hoping to find answers to his questions in the expression on my face. I said the first thing that came to me at this moment.

- Maybe I'm not very original, but I think the only way to work this out is to talk to her. Honestly.

He just nodded, looking at the ground - Yeah, I know we should have done that straight away, but somehow... well, we just haven't.

- You see Mark, as far as I'm concerned, if you are so close with someone, as you say you were...erm.. are with Rachel, an honest talk should fix everything. You can't hide it inside, that way it could go on for months, with you both suffering...- I stopped and looked at him with a strange expression on my face - Am I making any sense?

He laughed. - Yes, you are- then he looked straight into my eyes and said seriously -You helped me A LOT. You can't even imagine how much it means to me to tell someone about it. Even none of the guys knows what is it really all about...- he leaned towards me and gave me a big hug.

- Thank you- he whispered in my ear.

- It wasn't so hard, was it?- I smiled at him when we let go.

- No, not at all. You're a good listener- he smiled back and began staring at the ground. Suddenly he looked back at me and I could see the horror in his eyes.

I almost choked as he asked: - You're not going to use it in your article, are you?!?

Chapter 8

Almost an hour passed before me and Mark finally got back into the club, both smiling.

We noticed Dorothy and Bryan already sitting at the table, and you could see that they were out of breath, but extremely happy. And Shane... well, he didn't look any better! There was about eight empty glasses in front of him but drinking obviously didn't help him at all.

- Hey!- I said sitting down - What's up?

Dorothy noticed us and smiled.

- Where were you two, huh?

- Around...- Mark replied with a huge grin, sitting down beside me.

Suddenly Shane lifted his head up and look at us with his sad, sad eyes...

- You look better, mate...- he glanced at Mark.

- Well, I feel better as well...- Mark nodded and smiled at me. - Kate here helped me a lot!

I could just melt under his look right then and there...

- Well, yeah...um...glad to help!- I finally said and quickly changed the subject, feeling I'll blush any minute now, with Mark constantly looking at me - Where's Kian?

Just as I asked, Dorothy's face dropped. She was no longer smiling, she had a disgusted look on her face.

- Right there...- she said, pointing at the dance floor. I followed her gaze and noticed Kian- he was dancing with some girl. I think it was the one he was earlier speaking to, Agata. You could tell they were very much into each other, because Ki was all over her and she didn't seem to mind.

- Wow, he's pretty fast!- I said with a surprised look on my face.

- Yeah! And they've only just met!- Dorothy exclaimed angrily.

- What's wrong with you?- I asked her, a little puzzled.

- I just don't like her, that's all!- she exclaimed, but I wasn't satisfied with that answer- Dorothy never hated anyone before even meeting them. She looked so angry that I decided to just drop the subject.

But then I saw Kian and Agata approaching us.

- Uh oh- I said wondering, if this evening is going to end as nice as it begun...

- Hey everyone!- Kian exclaimed with a huge grin. He had his arm around Agata's waist and she looked very happy- she also had a big smile spread all over her face.

- This is Agata- Kian continued looking at us.

- Hi- she said and we all shook hands with her.

- Nice to meet you- I said with a smile, but then I got this evil look from Dorothy and I decided not to say anything else. I still haven't figured out what was wrong with my friend, though.

Agata looked very friendly, she was about 17 years old, she had blonde hair and blue eyes. No wonder Kian fell for her. They both sat down and we begun a nice chat, but Dorothy didn't say a single word.

I decided to ignore her bad mood and talk to Agata as everybody else did, 'cause I was sure that we could become good friends.

After a while Bry decided that him and the rest of the guys should already get back to the hotel.

- We got some interviews to do tomorrow- he said glancing at his watch. - and it's already 2 am.

- Yeah, we should be going- Mark nodded.

Kian's face dropped, it was obvious he wanted to stay a little longer with Agata, but he finally decided that the guys were right. There was only a tiny little problem with Shane... Not that he wanted to stay, but he was so drunk that someone had to carry him...

When Kian finally said goodbye to his new girl, Bryan placed Shane's hand on his shoulder and we all headed to the exit. Shane kept on mumbling something, but all I could understand was a name- 'Anya', which he said probably over a hundred times on our way out.

Finally Bryan managed to put Shane into the cab and Kian decided that he could have an eye on him during their ride to the hotel, so he put himself just beside the poor little fella...

Then there was just me, Mark, Dorothy and Bryan standing in front of the open door of the cab, trying to say goodbye.

- We've got some free time tomorrow evening as well...- Bryan said hesitantly, looking at Dorothy and me - - Wanna join us?- he asked with hope in his eyes.

- Yeah, that'd be nice if you girls could..!- Mark nodded and looked at us with the same expression in his eyes as Bryan.

- Oh, I dunno...- I pretended to hesitate - I'd have to check my agenda...

Dorothy pushed me playfully.

- Of course we want to, no problem- she said and smiled at Bryan.

- Great! It's a date then!- he smiled back at her. - How about 8 p.m. at the hotel?

- Oh yeah, and we have to pick you up...- I rolled my eyes.

- That's just because we don't know our way around here... Please?- Bry asked with puppy dog eyes and I knew Dorothy just couldn't resist when he was looking at her like that.

- She was just kidding- she shot me a look and smiled at him - 8 PM’s great.

- See you tomorrow then...- Bryan leant forward, gave her a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek. Her face was glowing.

Mark looked at me and smiled - I already can't wait..!

- Yeah, me either- I smiled back and closed my eyes as he was hugging me. It felt so nice... and when he kissed me on the cheek... well, it felt even better..!

They were about to get into the cab when Bryan remembered something.

- Can you give us your numbers, please? In case you wouldn't show up....- he smiled cheekily.

I think he knew just as well as I did that there was no such reason in the whole world, why we wouldn't show up. Especially Dorothy... there was no way she'd miss the chance of seeing Bryan again!

- Sure we can- I reached into my purse and found a pen and a piece of paper. I wrote down mine and Dorothy's phone numbers and handed the paper to Bryan.

- Now we know how to find you in case you'd decide to do something else instead of hanging out with us!

Bryan grinned and put the numbers in his pocket.

- Damn it!- I said - just when I thought we can get rid of you guys!

We all laughed, but finally Bryan and Mark had to get into the cab.

- See you tomorrow!- they both shouted and the car drove away.

- How about that..!- I sighed and glanced at Dorothy. She had an unreadable look at her face.

- What's wrong with you?

She snapped back to reality and gave me a weak smile.

- I think I'm falling for Bryan...- she whispered.

- Jeez, even a blind man would see that!- I laughed. But I suddenly stopped when she asked:

- And you?

- What about me?- I tried to look everywhere else but Dorothy. A cab pulled over in front of us and we got in.

- Oh, come on Kate, I know that you're totally into Mark!- she said still looking at me.

I tried to watch the city behind the glass and ignore her, but she wouldn't give up. - Kate?

- So what even if I am?- I finally looked at her - he has a girlfriend!

- But it seems that they're not doing too well... so you still have a chance, right?

I knew she wanted to cheer me up, but it just wouldn't work. After hearing what Mark had to say I knew that sooner or later he'd get back with Rachel and everything will be back to normal.

- Even if they broke up... I don't think he'd get over her that quickly...- I started to write something on the glass with my finger. Maybe Mark was feeling better now, but now I felt like I have taken the weight of his problems on my shoulders.

- But maybe...- Dorothy started, but I cut her off.

- Come on, Dorothy, do you really think they would remember us after flying back home or wherever they're going from here?- I said angrily. She didn't say a word after that, all the way to my house.

I felt so low as I got out of the cab, leaving Dorothy inside- she still had a few minutes' ride home from here. Maybe I shouldn't have said that, but I thought that high hopes wouldn't do us any good.

I rather tried to think about it as a nice meeting with a few nice lads- a great memory, but nothing else.

I couldn't admit to Dorothy that I was so stupid, that I fell in love with a guy I won't meet ever again and even if I do, he won't probably even remember my name... Could I..?
