ON BENDED KNEE

by Lajla

Darlin' I can't explain
Where did we lose our way
Girl it's drivin' me insane
And I know I just need

One more chance
To prove my love to you
If you come back to me
I'll guarantee
That I'll never let you go

-          “Kian, please, stop calling me! I already told you it’s over between us! You should get on with your life, just

like I got on with mine.” – Claire was telling for the second time that day to her ex-boyfriend, Kian, over the phone.

-          “Well, I’m sorry, Claire, but I just can’t except the fact that our love meant nothing to you!”

-          “I never said that, Kian. It meant a lot to me. And that’s why I want us to go our separate now, while we

still care for each other. Otherwise we’ll just end up hating each other, and then I wouldn’t want to remember these 2 years of our love. And I don’t want that, Kian.” – she said gently.

There was an uncomfortable silence between the two of them, and Claire thought Kian finally gave up.

-          “Claire, you can say whatever you want, but I won’t change my mind. We both know that’s not the real

reason why you broke up with me.”

-          “Kian. . .” – she interrupted him.

-          “No, wait, let me finish! No matter what you say, no matter what you do, the hope that’s in my heart that

something will happen between us again in the future, will never die. You just remember that, Claire. Cos you won’t get rid of me that easily. And you know why? Cos I love you. And I know you love me too. That’s why I won’t let you ruin both of our lives by ending our relationship.”

Can we go back to the days

Our love was strong
Can you tell me how
A perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me

How you get things back
The way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again
Until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

-          “Are you done?” – she asked when Kian stopped talking. She had to admit, she never thought Kian would

say such a thing. And she felt special, because he cared for her so much, that he was willing to do anything it takes for them to be together again. She felt flattered. But she didn’t let it show. She still thought it would be best if they break up before the problems start coming. Or at least that’s what she was trying to convince herself to think.

-          “Yes, I’m done.” – he said a little offended, cos the tone of Claire’s voice was telling him she wasn’t really

impressed by his speech. Even though he meant every word of it.

-          “Good, cos now I want to say something.” – she sighted. She didn’t know any easier way to say it. –

“Look, Kian. I don’t love you anymore. I still care for you, I always will, you can be sure in that. But I don’t love you anymore. At least not the way I used to. Why can’t you respect that? Why can’t you respect my wishes, Kian?” – she started to get a bit mad.

-          “Well, now you’re being ironic. You say you want me to respect your wishes, but what about you respecting

MY wishes? Don’t my wishes mean anything to you?” – he was feeling good, cos he knew she wouldn’t be able to say anything on his last comment. And he was right.

-          “Kian!!” – she yelled, with her teeth clenched. He was starting to seriously irritate her. He was acting like

a 4-year-old. Claire sighted, not really knowing what to say anymore. – “Look, let’s just drop it, alright? I have to go now, I’m already late. And please, Kian, don’t call me anymore! Do us both a favour, and forget my number. Trust me, it would be better for both you and me.”

-          “Whatever, Claire!” – he said as he hung up. Kian knew Claire would think about his words, he knew her too

well by now.

So many nights I dream of you
Holding my pillow tight
I know I don't need to be alone
When I open up my eyes
To face reality
Every moment without you
It seems like eternity
I'm begging you

Begging you come back to me

That night, Kian was lying in his bed, remembering what it was like when Claire was beside him. He took the pillow in his arms, hugged it tightly and smelled the pillow-case. It still smelled like Claire, her favourite perfume, the scent of her hair, her body. Kian soon drifted to sleep, dreaming of the day when he and Claire would be back together.

…… the next morning ……

-          “C’mon, Kian! Get up!!” – Shane was yelling that morning cos they had to go to do an interview and Kian

wasn’t up yet.

-          “Just a few more minutes.” – a muffled voice could be heard underneath the sheets.

-          “No, you can’t! Get up!” – Kian didn’t react to Shane’s words, so Shane yelled - “NOW, Kian!!! Anto is going

crazy! C’mon, we’ll be late!”

-          “Oh, alright!” – Kian said stubbornly.

-          “Y’know, Kian, you don’t need a pillow to keep you company at night! I’m sure you can find a girl who is

willing to go to bed with Mr Kian Egan!” - Shane looked at him and laughed.

-          “Oh, shut up, will ya?? – Kian said, not really being the morning person. – “I only want Claire, and I’ll get

her back, you’ll see!”

-          “Whatever you say, mate! I’m behind you all the way, but be careful that you don’t get burned. . . .again!” –

he said as he walked out of their hotel room, leaving Kian to get ready.

Can we go back to the days

Until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

-          “God, that guy is never gonna give up!” – Claire moaned when she saw another message from Kian on her

answering machine. She pushed play, as his famous voice filled the room. . . .

“Claire, it’s me. Listen, I have something to tell you. I was doing some thinking and I actually realized something. But before you get your hopes up, I’m not gonna give up on you!” – Claire sighted. She failed again! –“Anyway, I have to go now, but give me a call, alright? Actually, who am I kidding, we both know you won’t call me.” – Claire laughed. ‘You got that right, Kino!’, she thought. – “So, I guess I’m gonna call you later. Bye now, sweetie! Love you!”

-          “What’s he up to now?” – Claire thought out loud as she made her way to the bedroom. She soon fell

asleep.

-          “C’mon, pick up, Claire!” – Kian said hopefully that evening when he finally had some free time to call her.

-          “What??” – an angry voice on the other line could be heard. Claire really hated when somebody woke her

up.

-          “Jeez, you don’t have to bite my head off, y’know!” – he laughed.

-          “Oh, it’s you.”

-          “Well, don’t be so happy to hear my voice!” – he joked.

-          “What do you want, Kian? I want to go back to sleep.”

-          “Well, I was gonna tell you what I came to realize about.”

-          “Quite frankly, I don’t give a shit. But since you already woke me up. . . .”

-          “OK. Well, first I’m gonna say how sorry I am for whatever I’ve done to you that you felt you needed to

break up with me.”

-          “Kian. . . .”

Gonna swallow my pride
Say I'm sorry
Stop pointing fingers ð

The blame is on me
I want a new life
And I want it with you
If you feel the same
Don't ever let it go
You gotta believe

In the spirit of love
It can heal all things
We won't hurt any more
No I don't believe

Our love's terminal
I'm down on my knees

Begging you please
Come home

-          “No, let me finish. I know the real reason why you dumped me. You told me that a million times while we

were together, but I never realized how serious you really were. Until you broke up with me. I know that you hate being away from me so much, and I hate it too. I dunno, maybe you thought it’d be easier on you if we weren’t together anymore, rather than seeing each other once a month, if that. And I can fully understand that. Frankly, I feel the same way. And I can actually say that I’m glad you dumped me, cos it made me think about us and about our relationship, and I realized how much I care for you. And how devastated I was when I lost you.” – he said gently and paused. He laughed slightly. – “The lads said they might as well stick your picture on the pillow, cos I hug it every night, and I fall asleep like that, imagining it was you.” – he could hear a soft laughter on the other line. – “So, I guess what I’m trying to tell you is that I’m sorry if I ever made you feel neglected or unloved, because believe me, that was never my intention. And if you give me just one more chance, I promise you you will never feel like that again.” – he finished. For a few seconds there was a silence on the other line. Claire didn’t know what to say. She didn’t even realized tears had been falling down her cheeks.

-          “Kian, that’s the most beautiful thing anyone had ever said to me.” – she said, her voice trembling.

-          “So, is that a yes? Will you give me another chance?” – Kian’s voice was full of hope.

-          “Yes, Kian. Let’s try again!” – she smiled to herself. She felt better.

-          “Oh, thank you, baby!! You won’t regret it, you’ll see!! Hey Shane, she said yes!!!” – Kian yelled to Shane,

who was watching TV. Claire laughed at them, as she heard voices of other 4 guys yelling.

-          “You silly thing!”

-          “I love you, baby. I honestly do.” – Kian said gently. Lots of ‘awwwwww’s’ could be heard behind Kian’s back.

– “Shut up, you guys!” – Kian laughed.

-          “I love you too. I can’t wait to see you!” – Claire said honestly.

-          “Me too. Listen, I’m sorry, I have to go now, but I promise you, you’ll see me sooner than you expect!” – he

said cheekily, which made Claire laugh.

-          “Alright, I’ll see you then. Bye, honey!”

-          “Bye-bye!”

-          “Who is it?” – Claire yelled when her door-bell rang few hours later.

-          “Pizza boy!”

-          “I didn’t order any pizz. . . .KIIIAAAN!!!” – she screamed and jumped on Kian when she opened the door.

-          “Ouch! I think you seriously damaged my hearing!” – he laughed and hugged her tightly.

-          “Ah, shut up!” – she hit him playfully and looked at him seriously. – “I missed you, Ki.”

-          “I missed you too, baby.” – he looked deep into her eyes and kissed her gently. – “Well, aren’t you gonna

invite me in?” – he said smiling when they drew apart.

They were catching up on the time they lost, just sitting in front of the TV, hugging each other, and filling each other in on what they were up to lately, when Kian suddenly got up and knelt down in front of Claire. She was just looking at him confused.

-          “Claire, I know this is kinda out of the blue, but I thought a lot about it, and I’m positive I wanna do this.

I love you, baby. More than I ever loved anyone in my entire life. I’m willing to give it all up for you.” – he took a deep breath and looked deep into Claire’s beautiful eyes. – “Claire, would you do me the honour of being my wife?”

Tears started coming to Claire’s eyes, and she didn’t do a thing to stop it. Kian was getting nervous, he was starting to think she was gonna say no, when her lips formed into a beautiful smile.

-          “Yes, Kian, I’ll marry you.” – she said, kneeling down in front of him and kissing him.

Kian couldn’t hide his happiness. A single tear rolled down his face. . . .

Wanna build a new life
Just you and me
Gonna make you my wife
Raise a family
