Two 7-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were running around in the park, laughing. It was a sunny afternoon, and the park was full of children running around, screaming, hiding, some crying, some laughing. The two 7-year-olds didn’t seem to notice anyone else, the two of them played with each other, not taking any notice to what was going on around them. They seemed like they were friends……best of friends……

…… 14 years later ……

Kian was sitting in his room in his parents’ house in Sligo. He just came back from a 3 months long and tiring tour round the world, and all he wanted to do was relax, see his family, catch up with his friends, watch some video……but most of all he wanted to see her. Marielle. His best friend since they were 5-year-old, the only person he could tell everything to……well, almost everything. He was keeping something a secret from her, from everybody. He still wasn’t used to the fact that secret is true, let alone that he tells her. But he knew he had to, sooner or later.

He was sitting on his bed, looking at the picture frames placed on his desk, and remembering when they were kids, how much fun they used to have. They didn’t have to care about a single thing in the world. When did all that change? How did they grow up so fast?

They were still phoning each other every day, they never lost contact, even though Kian was a part of a world-wide known band Westlife. They still remained best friends. He was always telling her which countries they have visited, new jokes Bryan played on other lads, how many girls has Shane pulled in one night and stuff like that. And she was telling him what was going on in Sligo, how was she doing, and about her love life. Every time she told him some guy broke up with her, Kian’s heart broke in thousand pieces, cos he couldn’t stand seeing her sad. But it gave him hope, hope that maybe, just maybe, one day he would be the one beside Marielle. Not all those guys who didn’t deserved her if they didn’t treat her right.

“Knock knock.“

I hear your voice

And I start to tremble

Brings back the child that I resemble

He didn’t even have to look up, he knew it was her. Marielle.

“Mind if I come in?” – she continued with that beautiful smile of hers.

“How could I mind?” – he said, getting up, with a big grin on his face.

“Oooh, I missed ya, big guy!” – she said hugging him tightly.

“I missed you too, Ellie.” – he said inhaling the smell of her hair.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” – she asked when they drew apart.

“I wanted to surprise you!” – he said with that cheeky grin of his.

“Ah, you!” – she laughed, playfully hitting him on the arm.

They sat down on his bed and started talking and catching up.

Kian was taking in her every word, thinking how beautiful she was, and how fast his feelings for her changed. He never expected this to happen. He wondered what did make him fall in love with her? Was it something she said? Or the way she acted? He didn’t know that, but one thing he knew for sure. He was falling for her. And fast.

“And then he said……Ki, are you listening to me?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I am listening.” – he said realizing he didn’t hear one thing she said.

“Kian, are you alright? You seem like you’re miles away.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. I’m just tired and all.” – he lied, looking at the ground.

“You can’t fool me, big guy! It’s me, Ellie!” – she smiled. Kian looked at her. ‘God, she’s gorgeous!’ was all he

could think of. – “Hello? Earth to Kian, earth to Kian! Come in, Kian!” – she said laughing, and waving her little hand in front of his face.

“What? Oh, sorry! You were saying?”

“Gosh, Kian, you’re such a deutz!” – she laughed – “Didn’t change one bit!”

“Oh, I changed.” – he mumbled.

“Kian, I’m getting worried now. What’s going on?” – she asked with a serious look on her face.

Kian looked at her. This was it, this was the moment he was gonna tell her, the moment he was gonna reveal his true feelings for her. ‘Here comes nothing, Egan!’ he told himself before taking a deep breath.

“The truth is, Ellie, there is something I didn’t tell you. But before I tell you know what is it, I want you

to know that I didn’t plan this to happen, and I don’t have the slightest idea how it happened.”

“Ki, you know you can tell me anything. Go on.” – she gave him an encouraging smile.

He looked at her. ‘God, this is gonna be hard.’ He sighted.

“Marielle, I……I fell in love with you.” – he said quickly.

Marielle backed away slightly with surprised look on her face.

“You……you what?”

“I fell in love with you. Look, I dunno how it happened, it just……it just did.” – he asked scared of her

reaction. He was looking at her, trying to find some clues on her face, trying to find out what was she thinking. But she was just sitting there, staring at him blankly, not really knowing what to say. – “Say something, please. Anything.”

“Kian, I……I honestly don’t know what to say……This is……it’s……”

“Out of the blue?” – he filled in.

“Yeah, totally.” – she agreed.

“So? What do you think of it?” – he asked carefully.

“If you mean if I feel the same……” – Kian’s eyes light up. – “I’m sorry, sweetie, but I don’t.” – she said

softly, taking his hand in hers, which looked so fragile in his strong ones. Kian looked away, looking hurt.

“It’s alright. I don’t know what I expected anyway.” – he said getting up and walking over to the window.

He stood there, staring out, looking at nothing in particular. Then he felt somebody’s hands around his waist.

I don’t want to live this life

The rest of my life

“I honestly don’t know what to say, Kian.” – she said quietly.

“You don’t have to say anything, I understand. I can’t have it all, can I?” – he said sarcastically. – “But you

know what’s ironical? I would give it all up, all this fame, all my money, I would give up on all of my friends, hell, perhaps even my family……just to have you in my arms. For you to love me back.”

“Oh, Kian.” – she said and hugged him. Then she whispered into her ear. – “You know I’ll always be here for

you. Maybe not the way you want me to, but as a friend, a best friend, I’m always here. Remember that, sweetie, alright?”

He nodded.

“Marielle, would you mind leaving me alone for a few minutes? I need some time alone.” – he said after few

minutes.

“Of course, sweetie. If you need me, you know where you can find me.” – she smiled at him, gave him a kiss

on the cheek, and went out of his room.

He continued looking out the window and saw her crossing the street and looking up. He smiled at her and she smiled back.

“How did I fall in love with you?” – he said quietly as two tears made their way down his face……
