WAS IT SOMETHING I DIDN'T SAY

by Lajla

Spending another night alone

Wondering when I’m gonna ever see you again

Thinking what I would give to get you back, baby

He was sitting behind a small table in the corner of a Dublin pub, holding a glass of Whiskey in his left hand. He was remembering the things that happened to him in the last year. Just a little over a month ago he had it all. He was famous, he made his dream of singing come true, he had his friends beside him, he had money, people loved him, but most of all, she loved him. She. His one and only true love, his Michelle. And he blew it all, but the thing he regretted losing most was Michelle. He loved her more than anything, but he was just the kind of guy who didn’t let his feelings show. He knew now that was his biggest mistake.

I should have told you how I felt then

Instead I kept it to myself, yeah

I let my love go unexpressed

Till it was too late

It wasn’t that he didn’t love her, he did. He just never showed it that much. He thought she knew, he thought he doesn’t have to prove his love for her. But that wasn’t enough to Michelle. She couldn’t take it anymore. She did love him, but he pushed her away. So one day, she just left without a word. Just like that. Her leaving broke his heart in thousand little pieces and shattered all of his dreams and hopes. He quit Westlife, he couldn’t live one more day pretending everything was alright, when he knew nothing was alright. He couldn’t stand fake smiles around him anymore, it made him sick. He locked himself in his house, didn’t even let his friends or family get near him. The only time he left the house, was to go to the nearby pub, to drown his sorrows in booze. It didn’t help much though, the image of her kept coming in front of his eyes. Her beautiful smile, a smile that could light up the room. And her eyes……her beautiful green eyes that no-one could help falling in love with. Those green eyes were the main reason why he fell in love with her. And her personality……well, she was the greatest person he ever met. And once, he had all that. It was his. But not anymore, he lost it all because of his stupid pride. Hell, it wasn’t even a pride, it was just a fear of letting his emotions show.

Was it something I didn’t say

When I didn’t say ‘I love you’

Was it the words you never heard

All those words I should have told you

All those times, all those nights

When I had the chance to

Was it something I didn’t say

Bryan looked up when he heard a door of the pub opening. His eyes grew bigger by the sight. It was her, his Michelle.

She noticed him, but quickly looked away startled and she was about to go out, when he got up.

-          “Michelle, wait, please!”

-          “What it is, Bryan? I have nothing to say to you anymore.” – she said, still not looking at him.

-          “Please, look at me. I still need you, baby.” – he said softly once they were facing each other.

-          “Don’t, Bryan, please. Just don’t.” – she said sadly, knowing nothing he says or does will change her mind.

-          “Just give me 5 minutes, that’s all I’m asking.” – he pleaded.

-          “It won’t change anything, Bryan.”

-          “Then you have nothing to lose, have you? Please, just 5 minutes.”

She sat down hesitating. She didn’t think that was such a good idea, but she was still weak on Bryan, she still loved him. He just looked at her, without saying a word.

-          “I’m sorry……” – he finally broke down.

-          “It’s too late, I’m sorry……” – she said, tears rolling down her cheeks. It tore her apart seeing Bryan like

this.

-          “It’s not too late! Please, give me another try. I promise I will……”

-          “Don’t, Bryan.” – she said softly putting her finger on his lips. – “Don’t do this to me now. I’m sorry, but

you should’ve thought about it sooner.” – she said getting up.

Bryan broke down in tears, he couldn’t take it anymore. Michelle started going towards the door, she couldn’t stand watching her only love in such pain. But she knew what she had to do.

Suddenly, Bryan looked up.

-          “Michelle!”

She looked at him, not sure if it was such a smart thing to do.

-          “Just tell me one thing.” – he started. – “Was it something I didn’t say?”

Always assumed that you’d be there

Couldn’t forsee the day you’d ever be leaving me

How could I let my world slip through my hands, baby

-          “You still don’t get it, do you?” – she said sympathetically. – “If you didn’t understand it then, how can you

now?” – she turned around and was just about to step out of the pub when she heard his deep voice saying-

-          “Please, Michelle, tell me!” – she stopped. – “Just tell me what did make you walk away?”

She looked at him. She felt so sorry for him, he looked like a little baby, crying. She walked over to him, sat down, and sighted.

-          “All it took was three words, three little words. I love you. That was all. I needed to hear that once in a

while, Bryan. I wasn’t sure what you were feeling, and I couldn’t take any more nights thinking do you love me, or am I just a phase to you.”

I took for granted that you knew, yeah

All of the love I had for you, yeah

I guess you never had a clue

Till it was too late

You walked away

-          “I’m sorry, baby. I didn’t know……”

-          “I know, honey, it’s not your fault.” – she said softly, putting her hand on his. – “But I can’t pretend

everything’s OK. I have someone else now. Someone who loves me, and who shows his feelings to me. That’s what I need, Bryan.” – she said crying.

He looked at her sadly, tears making their way down his cheeks.

-          “Baby, just tell me one more thing. Did I push you into his arms?” – he said looking at her, trying to find

an answer in her eyes.

She looked down. What was she supposed to do? She knew that if Bryan told her more he loved her, this would never happened. Yes, Bryan pushed her into Jason’s arms. But she couldn’t hurt him anymore. She looked up, he looked so fragile. She forced a smile, taking his big hands into her little, and softly said-

-          “No, honey, it wasn’t your fault. It was me, I needed something different.”

Bryan looked down. He knew she was lying. She had such a good soul, never wanting to hurt anyone. How could he have been such an idiot to give up on her? How could he hurt her like that? How?

-          “I better go now. We’ll meet again, maybe.” – she said getting up. – “I still care about you, Bryan. I

honestly do.”

All the words were in my heart

They went unspoken
Baby, now my silent heart is a heart that’s broken
I shoulda said so many things
Shoulda let you know you’re the one I needed near me

But I never let you hear me

-          “Michelle, please remember, no matter what happens……I did love you, even though I didn’t show it. I still

do. And to be honest, I think I always will.”

He was crying, she was crying. She hugged him tightly, kissed him on the cheek, and whispered into his ear-

-          “I know baby, I forgive you.”

That was all he needed to hear. To hear that his true love doesn’t hate him. If he couldn’t have her, that was enough for him.

He watched her walk away from him. Walk out of his life, forever.

He knew now what those people were saying was true…… You never know what you have until you lose it…… He knew that now……
