BUT I WILL

by Lajla

Remember when I said

The next time would be

The last time

That time came this morning

When you came in

You always had a line

To change my mind

So I guess you thought

I’d let you break my heart again

She was sitting in her favourite armchair by the window, thinking of everything that has happened to her the past few months.

*flashback*

-          “Where have you been last night?” – Rebecca asked Bryan the next morning. She spent yet another night

alone in bed.

-          “I was at Mike’s, I spent the night at his place.” – he said sitting down to have some breakfast.

-          “Oh. Well, why didn’t you call me?”

-          “I must’ve forgot. I’m sorry, baby.” – he said not even looking at Rebecca. She turned around so he

couldn’t see the tears slowly filling her eyes. She just couldn’t take it anymore. Almost every night, Bryan wasn’t sleeping at home. And every time he had some other excuse.

-          “You can’t keep doing this anymore, Bryan.” – she suddenly said, not turning around.

-          “Doing what, baby?” – he said, taking a gulp of coffee.

-          “Not coming home at night, and not letting me know where you are. I always worry that something

happened to you, Bryan.” – she said turning around to look at him.

-          “I’m sorry, it won’t happen again, Bekki. I promise.”

-          “That’s what you said the last time.” – she said quietly.

-          “This time I mean it.” – he looked at her. – “Come here.” – he patted his leg. She went over to him and sat

in his lap, as he kissed her. – “Don’t worry about it, babe. Alright?” – she nodded.

She got up and went to the living room. She knew exactly where he was last night. She called Mike the night before to see where he is, but Mike said he hasn’t seen him in a week. He was cheating on her again. A tear slowly made its way down her cheek, leaving a wet trace behind it.

She promised herself this would be the last time. If he doesn’t come home one more night, it’s over. She looked out the window and sighted. She knew very well it would happen again. It was just a matter of time.

*flashback ends*

Rebecca looked at her watch, when she heard a door opening and then footsteps. She took a deep breath at the thought of who it was.

I don’t want to stop loving you

But I will

I don’t like wakin’ up alone

But I will

You’re the only one

Who can make my heart stand still

I don’t want to let you go

But I will

-          “Bekki, baby, you’re up already.” – he said hugging her from behind and kissing her neck. Rebecca’s heart

was slowly starting to break into thousand little pieces. When she didn’t react to his touch, Bryan knelt down in front of her and asked her-

-          “What’s wrong, baby?”

She looked at him. ‘He still has the face to ask what’s wrong?’, she thought.

-          “Where were you, Bryan?” – she asked, not showing any emotion.

-          “Oh, Kian called me, he needed to tell me something.” – he lied, looking everywhere except at Rebecca.

-          “No, he didn’t.”

-          “What do you mean? I think I know where I was last night!” – he got up, suddenly feeling annoyed.

I could write a book

On the innocent looks

You’re giving me

You’ve got one for

Every story you tell

I’ve seen it all

And I’m not gonna fall

For those make believe tears

So darlin’, I will try to make it dear

-          “I called him, Bryan. You weren’t there. Where were you?”

-          “You were checking on me?” – he raised his voice a bit.

-          “Well, what do you expect me to do? Just sit in the house, wondering where you are?”

-          “Well, you can trust me for one!”

-          “Trust you? You want me to trust you, Bryan?” – she got up from the armchair, and faced Bryan. – “Maybe

I would trust you. If you have been telling me the truth!”

-          “What do you mean? I always tell you the truth!” – he turned his back to her.

-          “Oh, give me a break! A moron could see you’re cheating on me! Why, Bryan? Why? What did I do to you?”

– tears started falling from her eyes, and she didn’t even try to wipe them off. – “Why do you enjoy hurting me so much?”

He turned around to look at her. His heart tore when he saw her fragile like that. At that moment, he saw all the hurt and all the pain in her eyes. He knew he hurt her deeply.

-          “I. . . .I didn’t. . . .” – he sighted. – “How did you find out?” – he finally gave in. He saw there was no point in

lying anymore, she knew everything.

-          “Does it matter? The point is, that you’re cheating on me after all these years we spent together. I

thought I meant something to you, Bryan. I honestly did.” – the tears just wouldn’t stop falling.

-          “You did mean something to me. You still do. I just. . . .I don’t know. I was never a-one-woman person.” – he

looked at her.

-          “And that should make it all better? You know, I don’t know what hurts more. The fact that you didn’t

love me enough so you had to cheat on me. Or the fact the you’re been lying to me. Or maybe the fact that you led me to believe you actually love me. I don’t know, Bryan. I dunno. . . .”

-          “I’m sorry, Rebecca, I honestly am.”

-          “No, you’re not sorry! And you know it! So stop lying, for God’s sake!!” – she started yelling. – “You never

cared for me one bit! Why did you have to ruin my life, Bryan? Why? I loved you with all my heart, and you betrayed me. Why?” – she simply said as she made her way out of their house, picking up a suitcase she left at the front door. She knew this is the end of their love when he didn’t come home last night, so she packed some things. - “I’ll send someone to get the rest of my stuff.” – she said quietly, her voice still trembling from all the crying, as she closed the door behind her leaving Bryan standing there. He knew this was it, he knew he blew it big time and there was nothing he could say or do to make it right again.

He slowly went over to the window. He saw Rebecca putting her suitcase in her sister’s car. She was just standing there for few seconds, when her sister went out of the car and gave her a hug. Bryan could see Rebecca was wiping away the tears, and he felt so miserable. He knew he was the reason of her tears, and he couldn’t help but feel like the biggest jerk in the world.

I don’t want to stop loving you

But I will

I don’t like wakin’ up alone

But I will

You’re the only one

Who can make my heart stand still

I don’t want to let you go

But I will

He watched her sitting in the car and then slowly looking up at Bryan. When he saw that look in her eyes, his heart broke. He watched the car, until he couldn’t see it no more. He sank on the floor and stared at the empty space in front of him, as a single tear slowly made its way down his cheek. . . . He finally realized how much she meant to him. . . . But it was too late now, and he knew it. He suddenly felt all this pain in his heart, in his soul. It was the same kind of pain Rebecca was feeling every night he didn’t come home. He could finally feel what has he done to her. . . .
