Fibromyalgia patients suffer from a lack of deep restorative sleep, regardless of whether the sufferer is getting a full nights sleep or not. Typically, during the deep phase of sleep, immune functions and serotonin production occur to levels that allow us to function during our waking hours. Thus, those with Fibromyalgia, suffer from reduced serotonin and impared immune function. Persons with Fibromyalgia generally suffer from cognitive problems known as Fibrofog. This includes: short term memory problems, attention issues, inability to remain focused and more. SPECT scan research on fibromyalgia patients has shown decreased blood flow in the portions of the brain including the thalamus (one of the hormone control centers in the brain). As pain symptoms become acute, disrupting sleep, fibrofog becomes greater. Patients with fibromyalgia have been found to have three times the normal level of Substance P in the spinal fluid. This is the neurochemical that determines how much pain a person is experiencing. Growth hormones are instrumental in the repair of muscle tissue, and have been found to be low in patients with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is frequently defined as primary or secondary Fibromyalgia. Primary Fibromylagia occurs in the absence of any other diagnosable condition. Secondary Fibromyalgia occurs as a result of, or in conjuction with conditions such as Lupus, Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis and many other chronic conditions. Keep in mind that a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia does not mean that you have one of these conditions, But, if you have been diagnosed with one of these chronic conditions, you may have Secondary Fibromyalgia. |

Fibromyalgia runs an uneven course. During good days, you may tend to overexert and weaken an already compromised energy and immune system. Fibromyalgia is frequently treated with prescriptions for muscle relaxants, analgesics, antidepressants and/or sleep aids. Additionally, people suffering with Fibromyalgia are often referred for Massage Therapy, acupuncture, yoga, biofeedback and other alternative therapies. |
