Harry Kim was born in 2349. He graduated form Starfleet Academy in 2370, was assigned to the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 ass operations officer in 2371, and dies in the line of duty in 2372 far from home in the Delta Quadrant. Kim's career is not finished yet, however as he is quickly replaced by an alternate 'twin' who continues to serve on board Voyager.
This pivotal incident in Harry's life occurs when the ship is concealed from the organ-harvesting Vidiians in a large plasma drift. Upon exiting this phenomenon, Voyager encounters a spatial scission that duplicates the ship and its crew.
The original voyager is then severely damaged by continual polaron bursts - just as the crew are about to use these same bursts to stabilize their vessel's warp core. The invisible copy of Voyager has beaten them to it.
Ensign Kim is assigned to help Chief Engineer B'Elanna Torres implement a force field to seal a hull breach. However, and explosion causes the breach to widen, and the young ensign is swept out into the vacuum of space condemned to a swift and silent death.

As the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 continues her journey back to the Alpha Quadrant Harry Kim has proved himself to be and excellent Starfleet officer and has more then fulfilled the early promise he showed at Starfleet Academy.
Harry Kim is born in 2349 on Earth, and is his parents' only son. He joined Starfleet Academy when he was just 18. While there, he made it a point to call his parents every week even when on training missions and the separation that occurs later is particularly difficult for him.
At the Academy, the record shows that Harry excels in both analytical and engineering operations. These roles require someone who stands firm under pressure and acts with a clear mind, Harry is very much an optimist and a forward thinker.
While at the academy, he edits the school newspaper for a year, and his articles on the expanding Maquis problem generate much debate among the cadets.
Harry also manages to find time for the simpler pleasures in life. He plays clarinet in the Julliard Youth Symphony, and is in a serious relationship with a young woman, Libby.

When Ensign Harry Kim is assigned to the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 on a deep space mission in 2371, he somehow forgets to pack his precious clarinet. Under normal circumstances, this would not be a problem; Harry could easily pick up another clarinet in the Alpha Quadrant, or use the Intrepid-class vessel's replicators to create a new musical instrument. Due to an unexpected turn of events, however, the U.S.S. Voyager and its crew become stranded in the Delta Quadrant some 70000 light years away from Earth. The young Ensign can no longer simply send home for his clarinet, and the replicator rations of all surviving personnel are now considered valuable commodities. The situation proves to be extremely frustrating for such a dedicated musician as Harry, a former member of Earth's Julliard Youth Symphony Orchestra. He eventually decides to sacrifice a week's worth of replicator rations and live off chef Neelix's own experimental concoctions - most of which area considered to be inedible - just so that he can gain a new clarinet.

As the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656's operations officer Harry Kim has many duties that overlap with the engineering department. For example, he assists Chief Engineer B'Elanna Torres with diagnostic reports and plasma relay maintenance, and keeps Captain Janeway informed about the status of the ship's systems.
At Starfleet Academy, Harry showed and aptitude for engineering, and had he not been assigned to Voyager it seems very likely that he would have accepted a post with the Starfleet Engineering Corps, working on the design of a new class of Runabout.
Harry is a serious and studious presence aboard Voyager, his highly trained mind constantly thinking about the technical and operational well being of the ship. Responsible and reliable though Harry is, he can also be a stubborn and defiant engineer, the kind who, once he makes up his mid to do something cannot be kept from going ahead with it.
