I have found  a petition called Pennies for Pele.  This is an effort to convince NASA to fund remote sensing during a Galileo flyby of Io in January 2002.  This flyby provides an opportunity to view a side of Io that has never been imaged close up before.  The other 5 flybys of Io have concentrated on Io's anti-jovian hemisphere.  This flyby could also be used to look for changes since Voyager in this area.  Currently, of the 5 satellite encounters in Galileo's new extension mission, Galileo Millennium Mission Part 2, only remote sensing in those flybys that take place in 2001 (one of Callisto and two of Io) have been funded.  That means that Galileo's "eyes" (SSI, NIMS, and PPR) will be closed during the January 2002 pass ("I33").

If you have not signed the petition, located at http://members.fortunecity.com/volcanopele/penniesforpele/ , I encourage you to do so.  No spacecraft will arrive in the Jupiter system until at the very least 2009, and that craft, Europa Orbiter, won't come within 200,000 km of Io.  So I believe it is important that we image as much of it at close range as we can because who knows when another spaceprobe will pass close to it again.
