COPITO DE NIEVE, or SNOWFLAKE, was captured by Benito Mañé in the dense jungle of Ntmen, in Equatorial Guinea. At the time of his capture SNOWFLAKE weighed 8.75 kg and he was subsequently sold to the Ikunde Acclimatisation Centre, a subsidiary of our zoo under the responsibility of Dr. Jordy Sabater Pi. He was later transported to Barcelona, arriving at the zoo on the 1st of november 1966. Originally called "Nfumo" by the natives due to his albinism, when he arrived in the city of Barcelona his name was changed to SNOWFLAKE. COPITO DE NIEVE is the only known albino gorilla in existence and has become a true centre of attraction in the zoo, as well as one of the most well-known symbols of the city of Barcelona. He shares his facilities with two adult females and six of his offspring have survived to date.
