VICTORIA'S GOTHIC MAKE UP PAGE.
SKIN.
Always begin with clean skin. Use a soap specifically for your face, if you haven't washed then the oils in your skin will soak up any makeup you put on, causing it to look uneven and heavy. after you wash, exfoliate with some facial scrub, do not use if you're badly broken out. you'll just get worse. go to the doctor and get it treated!
Now that you're fresh and scrubbed ( a good mud pack every so often is a great idea, try to set aside a whole afternoon and really pamper yourself! wine, candles and haunting/soothing music followed by a hot bath works for me.) (Do this with a close friend and it's even better!!), slap on moisturizer where needed. if you have oily skin, this isn't really going to help you. you'll need something oil free, and use it sparingly, or your makeup will slide right off your face. if you have combination skin you'll just need a little dab here and there. let it sink in for a second. People with dry skin will need to get out the family size jar.
Now look in the mirror, no closer, closer still. Scary or what! Cover any blotches or marks with a concealer that matches your real skin tone, pluck or shave any unwanted stray hairs. (If you're male you should have already had a good close shave, otherwise the finished result will resemble a badly Artexed bathroom ceiling!) (For our American readers, Artex is a white lumpy paint which the British paint onto uneven walls and ceilings, this is then scraped into jagged peaks and furrows. Apparently this is meant to improve the decor' No one knows why.)
White face cream (the stuff you get from joke shops with a happy clown on the front!) is very hard to get even, and usually looks blotchy (back to the Artex look again) unless you really know what you're doing, forget it. Going too white looks silly if you're very dark or olive skinned, anyway. Get some foundation that matches your skin colour and pour some into the palm of your hand that you won't be using to apply it with (you'll have to guesstimate and practice as to how much you need to use); now mix in a little white (it doesn't take much). the foundation makes it very smooth and it blends easily. start on your nose and work out to the hair line. don't forget your neck.. (I vont to bite your neck!) and the top of the bust area, I see a lot of people who look like they're wearing masks because they stop at their chins. Instead of putting on one thick coat, put on a thin coat all over, then go back over with another thin coat in the spots where you really need it, usually the nose and cheek area. To set it, you'll need some loose powder and a brush. apply powder all over face liberally, then brush off excess. It's easier if you can find white foundation, (Stargazer cosmetics make a very good one.) But if all you can get a hold of is creme makeup, you can still achieve a gorgeous pallor. :)
If you do get a hold of some white foundation, take care when applying it. it usually is more difficult to get even than foundation with colour in it. if you're not dead set on looking paper white and would rather go with a shade that just looks like you are really damn pale naturally, put on some regular pale foundation (L'oreal makes some pretty light foundations) and use stark white powder over it, either pressed or loose (I find loose powder is better as it does not seem to clog like pressed powder does). when you're applying powder, don't forget to brush up and into your hairline; it really makes a difference in your appearance. if you're face seems to be lacking depth, suck in your cheeks and brush a little grey eye shadow under the bones (or blue eyeliner but smooth in well so it does not show).

EYE MAKE UP.
I'm a devil for eye shadow, but unless you really want to walk around like Harry the happy panda just put black or grey liner following the lash line on the top lid and follow with a little shadow on top of it to keep it in place longer. Now for the creative bit, swirls, blocks of colour, anything goes, it really depends on the shape of your eye as to what will look good on you. Watch a few films, look at pictures, anything from Egyptian princess to demented clown (Yes we've all seen the Crow.) (there is even a computer program on the market now, you can try lots of different looks without spending loads of money), tailor your eyes to the crowd you're with. (If people start making the sign against the 'evil eyeshadow' you may have overdone it.) If you put eye shadow on the bottom lid, your eyes will look really small. if you have droopy or 'bedroom' eyes, don't line from end to end of your eyelid. start your line at the centre and go to the outside edge. this will make your eyes look slightly larger. mascara is a must! (too much is never enough!) the blacker the better. apply one thin coat and let it dry. throw out mascara after three months (maybe more frequently). it gets really gross from touching your eyes, and when it starts drying out, it becomes increasingly more difficult to keep your lashes from sticking together. don't ever share mascara or anything that touches your eyes. the whole point of eyelashes it to trap beasties and dust to keep them from getting into your eyes, so just imagine what your mascara catches.

LIPSTICK.
It really helps if you're completely dressed before you put on lipstick (well, if its something that has to be pulled on over your head). after all that business with the foundation and powder, your lips are probably kinda dried out by now. makeup experts say that having foundation and powder on your lips makes your lipstick stay longer, try it to see if it works for you. You can put on a little chapstick right before the lipstick to make sure it goes on evenly and smoothly. it's all personal preference, however. If you can't find black lipstick (most aren't that great anyway), black eyeliner will work, it just takes a steady hand. and please don't dismiss other colours of lipstick. red especially can be extremely dramatic but purple right through to green can work depending on your outfit. The whole point is to experiment and see what suits you.

NAILS.
The sheer range of colours available is mind boggeling. What with nail 'tattoos' and special pens to paint on your own design there is enough choice for even the most avid nailaholic.
If you are using a dark polish, use clear polish first and only paint on the top colour when thats completely dry. This way when you come to take it off your nails SHOULD be stain free. (Going to work with carmine nails can be very off putting for your boss, especialy if you're male.)Thre are now 'nail rings' available which are basicly like ear rings that go through little holes drilled in your nails. If you've ever caught up your spiked wristband/collar in your/ or someone elses fishnets you can probably see why these may be a dumb idea! (Gothic twister anyone?)
