SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES Live in
Chicago @ The Vic Theatre
April 21st 2002 |
|
This is Trents personal review of the first Chicago show. Pure I was very very
excited to learn that Siouxsie and The Banshees were feeling the itch
after 7 years to take their show in the road again. As soon as the
dates were announced plans began to take shape for me to make the 4 hour
drive to Chicago, Illinois (as I am from Detroit, Michigan). I
arrived at the Vic Theatre at about 7:10 c.s.t. and waited outside with
the other faithful to be let into the venue....in a t-shirt and
shorts....in 30 degree rainy, windy weather!
Once we were let
in I was *very pleasantly* surprised that we were allowed to bring in
small cameras! Had I known this I would have brought rolls of
film. The opening band, eX-girl, put on a very entertaining
show......I'm sure Budgie and Sioux are big fans as Budgie was wearing a
baby-doll eX-girl sleeveless shirt.
Then it was time
for the Banshees to come out. The lights went down, the music to
'Pure' played and the place went wild! Sioux looked
amazing! Her red glitter eyelashes and bloodred lipstick made her
look like the goddess that she is. I don't care what *anyone* says,
her hair was beautifully stylish.......the woman can do no
wrong.
The set played on
and it struck me that this could have been a SATB show in 1985......it was
like being back in time. I was too young to see SATB when they were
in their prime (throughout the 80's) and felt very fortunate to be able to
witness these songs live. 'Metal Postcard' and
'Christine' sent me into mild hysterics......had they played
'Red Light', 'Overground' or 'Psychic' I would
have died on the spot! The highlight of the show, for me, was
'Drop Dead/Celebration'. I never dreamed in my lifetime I
would get to hear this song performed live. 'Cities In
Dust' had the whole place singing along with the
band.
There has been a
lot of talk about what happened with the security guard and I was right up
front and the whole incident happened right in front of me and
here's how it went:
[I was left of
stage in full view of the whole incident, much to my pleasure]
Siouxsie made it very clear
that she didn't want the security guards to walk in front of the
stage. After 'Icon' she
stopped the show to tell the security guards that the front of the stage
(between the stage and the barricades) was "not a fucking Catwalk" and if
they continued to walk back and forth she was going to take off one
of their heads with her mic stand. She said she needed practice
for her golf swing anyway (then she made a golf swinging
motion). She told us the best way was to use heads.
During the second encore, approx. 20 secs. into
'Spellbound', one of
the dip-fucks, did indeed, walk across the stage and she just got pissed. The music played on but she stopped
singing, walked over to where he was (far left of stage) and
kicked him in the back twice with the very sharp-looking heel of her very
stylish shoe (she never hit him with her hands or her microphone). He kept
glowering at her and she said "What? What? Do you want to take
this outside?"
Severin threw down his bass but not because of the
security guard (it was previously reported
that he too was upset with the actions of the security crew. I
believe he got upset because the guitar tech did not tune his bass
correctly). He *did* see the security guard in question
talking to other security guards and walked over to him and put his foot
on his shoulder while continuing to play (I
believe still during 'Spellbound'). This seemed to
piss him off even further.
After the show was
over, Sioux's "people" came over to the guard and were talking in his ear
(apparently trying to smooth things over) to which he replied out loud "I
don't care I want her arrested!"
After that we were
pushed out and away from the front near the stage and that's all I heard
there.
While waiting
outside for Sioux to come out (which she didn't) I saw the security guard
and his other security guard friends walking out of the venue and I heard
one of the others say to him "I can't believe you let it go....I would
have pressed charges." And that's about how the whole drama thing
came to an end.
The show was an amazing one! Siouxsie and each of the
Banshees were in fine form (though Knox did look like he was having a
little trouble) and I hope they continue to tour. It was
a very special night
indeed! |
