SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES

Live in Chicago @ The Vic Theatre April 22nd 2002

A Pseudo Review by Edward Herrerias

 About 8:10 pm- 8:40 pm

The opening act for the Banshees were X-Girl, and to be honest I really did not care who opened for them. But I was pleasantly surprised. Three Japanese women (drummer, bassist, lead guitar) came out on stage, as a remixed version of the 80s song Pop Music played. Each one was wearing a plastic, spongy wig and when they took them off, that’s when the fun started. They played for about 30 minutes and the music ranged from pop-inspired songs to a Japanese- English acappella piece. And they rocked! Overall they were entertaining and really sought to engage the audience by speaking directly to them and asking them questions. I would definitely see them again if they came back to Chicago.

 About 9:10 pm- 11:00 pm

It took awhile for the Banshees to come out- sound checks and the like. And just before they came out, a roadie came out and taped incense to the speakers on either side of the stage and in the center. It gave the theatre a solemn, religious feel and it smelled good. I think it was vanilla? Regardless, it was cool! Then the lights dimmed and out came Siouxsie and the Banshees! Siouxsie looked great in a grey semi-shiny suit with shirt and tie and her hair was a shortened version of the way her hair looked in the Candyman video. At about a half-hour into the set, I think (I totally lost track of time I was entranced by Siouxsie!) she took off her jacket, shirt and tie to reveal her black bra top with sequins! Unfortunately she didn’t throw her clothes into the audience- I definitely would have been part of that fray!

At one point Siouxsie addressed the audience in the balconies and said, “ What? You’re just going to sit there like you’re watching telly?” Siouxsie’s voice was great, Steve was bassin’ up a storm, Budgie looked gleeful as he pounded away at his drums and Knox was doing a pretty good job. Near the end of the concert Siouxsie went and put her arm around him and brought him to center stage as if to present him to the audience. The lights were great and the sound was loud! The band came back for two encores- the first song they played was Nicotrne Stain, the first song they played for the second encore was Cities In Dust. At the end of the concert someone from the audience gave Siouxsie a big thick book on Salvador Dali and Budgie reached out to the audience on both sides of the stage as he exited.

I am a relatively new Siouxsie fan and I was not familiar with the majority of the songs, but the Banshees delivered a great show! One thing that I love (and one of the reasons, besides great music, that I think a lot of people love the band) is that Siouxsie has such a strong stage presence. She fills the stage and owns it when she is up there!  She really gets into the music and all her moves are not predetermined and she just goes wherever the music takes her. It was my first time seeing her and the band and I was not disappointed! Long live Siouxsie and the Banshees!!!
