Detailed History
Nine Ford Transit minibuses with Carlyle bodywork and diesel engines were purchased new by Southern Vectis during the first half of 1985. The Ford Transit minibus was based on conversion of the walk-through van available at the time, hence they are known throughout the bus industry as Bread Vans.

B250LDL / B251LDL & B252LDL were new in January 1985 with B254MDL / B256MDL / B257MDL & B258MDL being new in May 1985 and entered service as [250] / [251] / [252] / [254] / [256] / [257] & [258] respectively in the "Wanderer" livery of Caribbean Blue, French Blue and Diamond White with a black skirt.

B259MDL / B260MDL & B261MDL were new in May 1985 and entered service as [259] / [260] & [261] respectively in the "Hydrobus" livery of Sunburst Red, Monarch Red and Diamond White with a black skirt.

In January 1987 B260MDL [260] went on loan to Pilgram Coaches of Southampton.

Between February 1988 to 26 March 1988 B250LDL [250] / B251LDL [251] were transferred to Badger Vectis - B250LDL [250] was repainted in White with Green & Yellow Stripes (ie. standard Badger Vectis livery) and operated as number [33].

They were withdrawn from service in:
July 1988: B250LDL [250] & B251LDL [251]
October 1988: B252LDL [252]
November 1990: B254MDL [254] / B259MDL [259] / B260MDL [260] & B261MDL [261]
1992: B256MDL [256] & B258MDL [258]
1993: B257MDL [257]

Subsequent History

B250LDL [250]:

  • In July 1988 it was sold to Hampshire Bus and operated as their number [9].
  • In December 1988 it was sold to Devon General and operated as their number [586]. They subsequently used it as a publicity vehicle.

B251LDL [251]:

  • In July 1988 it was sold to Hampshire Bus and operated as their number [10].
  • In December 1988 it was sold to Devon General and operated as their number [587]. They subsequently used it as a recovery vehicle.

B252LDL [252]:

  • In October 1988 it went on loan to Solent Blue Line.
  • In November 1988 it was transferred to Solent Blue Line and operated as their number [252].
    In July 1989 it was temporarily withdrawn, and then reinstated.
    In December 1989 it was finally withdrawn by Solent Blue Line.
  • In November 1990 it was sold to Watts Travel (RJ & M Watts) of Farlington.
  • By February 1998 it had passed to Cudlipp Coaches, now known as Linco Travel, of Sturminster Newton.

B254MDL [254]:

  • In March 1991 it was sold to Needles Pleasure Park of Alum Bay as a staff bus.
  • In January 1993 it was sold to Wightline Coaches of Newport whom operated it in a Cream & Green livery.
  • It subsequently passed to Ganges Coaches of Cowes.
  • Since at least the end of 1998 it has been parked disused in Ganges depot at Cowes. [per Gavin Rowney]

B256MDL [256]:

  • In June 1992 it was sold to Willtax of Shanklin.
  • It subsequently passed to a private owner on the Isle of Wight.
    It was noted in use by an unknown band in the Freshwater area during June 2002.
    In February 2003 it was noted partially dismantled in a drive in Carisbrooke.

B257MDL [257]:

  • Subsequent history unknown.

B258MDL [258]:

  • In September 1992 it was sold to Haylands Farm Project of Ryde. [per Dave Shaw]
  • In October 1995 it was sold to The Halifax Bus Company t/a T.J. Walsh of Halifax. [per Dave Shaw]
    It was reregistered to TJI9148 operating as their number [TJ8]. It was withdrawn by May 2003. [per Gavin Rowney]

B259MDL [259]:

  • In April 1991 it was sold to Redbeam Ltd. t/a M-Travel of Newport - it was withdrawn in February 1998.
  • In February 1998 it was sold to a private owner on the Isle of Wight for preservation.

B260MDL [260]:

  • In April 1991 it was sold to Redbeam Ltd. t/a M-Travel of Newport.
  • In January 1998 it was sold to Island Motor Salvage of Rookley, IW, (dealer) and scrapped.

B261MDL [261]:

  • In April 1991 it was sold to Redbeam Ltd. t/a M-Travel of Newport.
    In May 1995 - still with M-Travel - it was converted to open-top and was fitted with a public address system. It was used in this guise as a summer only guided tour of Ventnor.
  • In May 1997 it was sold to The Halifax Bus Company t/a T.J. Walsh Minibus Services of Halifax. It was reregistered to B20TJW operating as their number [TJ20] also being named [Benjamin].

In February 1988 B250LDL was transferred to the short-lived Badger Vectis operation in Bournemouth. When operations ceased in March 1988 it was stored at Barton Park, Eastleigh. A nearside-front view in Badger Vectis livery prior to being sold to Hampshire Bus.
