Detailed History
Six Bristol KSW5G's with ECW bodywork and five-cylinder Gardner diesel engines were bought new by Southern Vectis during 1952 which entered service in Tilling Green & Cream livery. They were the first eight-feet wide double-decker buses delivered to the company but were otherwise similar to the Bristol KS5G's delivered earlier in 1952 and were fitted with three-aperture type F destination blinds front and rear.

A further nine Bristol KSW5G's with ECW bodywork and five-cylinder Gardner diesel engines were bought new by Southern Vectis during 1953 which entered service in Tilling Green & Cream livery. JDL719 [769] / JDL720 [770] / JDL721 [771] / JDL722 [772] & JDL723 [773] featured staggered seating in the upper-deck - those of JDL721 [771] / JDL722 [772] & JDL723 [773] were set at an angle - otherwise they were identical to the batch delivered in 1952.

In the same way that the earlier Bristol KS was so designated, the Bristol KSW was designated type LB by Southern Vectis.

During 1954 one of the batch - and probably JDL35 [761] - was involved in an overturning accident at Gatcombe. It was subsequently repaired and returned to service. [per Dave Jolliffe]

Between September 1956 and 1960 the "VIA" destination screens were disused and phased-out, being set to display "SOUTHERN VECTIS".

During 1961/1962 Clayton underseat heaters were fitted to both decks of the batch.

In March 1967 JDL719 [769] collided with a tree whilst on driver training duties.

They were withdrawn in:
1968: JDL35 [761]
May 1969: JDL33 [759] / JDL34 [760] / JDL36 [762] / JDL37 [763] & JDL38 [764]
May 1970: JDL39 [765] / JDL40 [766] & JDL720 [770]
August 1970: JDL41 [767] / JDL42 [768] / JDL719 [769] / JDL721 [771] & JDL722 [772]
September 1970: JDL723 [773]
