THE Island of Sri Lanka situated in the Indian Ocean has one of the highest specie densities of snakes in the world. Over 90 species from nine families are represented within the diverse habitats found within the borders of Sri Lanka. Many of these species are found nowhere else in the world.

Snakes have been the innocent victims of millenia of prejudice. It is true certain species are venomous but species with venom potent enough to kill a human being number less than 300 out of the 2500 or so known species of snakes. In Sri Lanka only around ten terrestrial snakes possess venom capable of killing a human being.

However the myth that every snake is a ruthless killer is still prevailant in many parts of the world. This has led to the wanton killing of many inoffensive snake species. Those species with an inoffensive reputation have been overexploited for the pet trade while the skin trade along with habitat destruction continue to tip the scales of balance of many species towards extinction.

This site is dedicated to promote understanding, research and preservation of Sri Lankan snake species and other snakes of the world.
