Typical or Good = 2 stones.
-- old system this is up to 400 lbs, new system is 250. These don't specify press or lift or HOW you lift it however, so they are roughly equivalent.
Excellent = 3 stones.
-- 800 lbs old system, 1000 new. This is PEAK human performance for all things except Intelligence.
Remarkable = 4 stones.
-- old system is max 1 ton, and the new one is 2 tons. here we start to see a shift.
Incredible = 6 stones.
-- old syste and new both list this as max 10 tons. as you can see, there is a gap between 4 and 6 the older system misses. The new system is LESS detailed on the feeble ranks, bu MORE detailed on the higher end. This allows more variance in heroes.
Amazing = 8 stones.
-- again old and new both top out at 50 tons, but the new system allows for more detail between these levels. More linear progression and less bell curve.
Monstrous = 9 stones.
-- 80 tons old system, and 75 tons new. Close enough to call.
Unearthly = 10 stones.
-- 100 tons on each.
So as you can see, the variance with some writeups is that the new system breaks down individual strengths a bit more accurrately than the old system did. You could say your character had Incredible strength, but could only lift 5 tons... but who would.
This is why we have the spidey debate... comics say 5 tons, but in the old system this takes incredible... which tops out at 10 tons. So which i right? New stats are actually MORE accurrate for spidey in this situation, and the 5 stones matches the 5 tons casual strength he is attributed in mst storylines.
This scale holds true for intelligence also... but is not capped at 3 stones like most physical stats are. Also note, treat each column shift as an equal number of bonus or penalty stones.
How does this help? A talent might give +2 CS with ranged weapons. This is the same as +2 stones. For modelling talents/skills... you factor the total rank attainable in old system, then match that in the new by the raw action itself.... if the action automatically gains an ability bonus make sure the combined total at least matches the old.
And remember... wing it! This ain't exact Reed Richards science people....
The problem with conversion of characters is that not all the statistics are on the same scale...they're close, but not quite. The main difference is that Strength uses a slightly different scale than all the rest of the MURPG stats.
I used this:
| TSR MSH | MURPG STR | MURPG OTHER |
|---|---|---|
| Shift-0 | 0 | 0 |
| Feeble | 1 | 1 |
| Poor | 1 | 2 |
| Typical | 2 | 2 |
| Good | 2 | 3 |
| Excellent | 3 | 3 |
| Remarkable | 3 | 7 |
| Incredible | 6 | 7 |
| Amazing | 8 | 7 |
| Monstrous | 9 | 8 |
| Unearthly | 10 | 8 |
| Shift X | 12 | 9 |
| Shift Y | 14 | 10 |
| Shift Z | 18 | 14 |
| Class 1000 | 20 | 16 |
| Class 3000 | 40 | 18 |
| Class 5000 | 60 | 20 |
There is the unfortunate jump from 3 to 6 or 3 to 7 (depending on the stat). This was arrived at comparing a random sampling of TSR MSH characters to the known (at that time) MURPG characters. It's the only way to do it, really, with any consistancy. You can view my whole chart at
Converting the stats themselves was pretty straightforward:
TSR MSH: MURPG:
Fighting - Clost Combat
Agility - Agility
Strength - Strength
Endurance - Durability
Reason - Intelligence/General Knowledge/Tech
Intuition - Intelligence
Psyche - Mental and/or Magical Defense
(Psy/Pop) - Leadership and/or Social Skills
Actions, of course, represent the meta-human powers the character has. Some aren't even needing to be translated, such as the Hulk's leaping--which in MURPG is a function of Strength. It's an educated guess method on some others--and some are just plain simple, such as with Cyclops' eye-blast.
More important to the bare statistics, the feel and character of the character needs to come through. By so doing, we also eliminate the unfortunate listing of Hercules' 8 Agility--is there a single person who read that and agreed? (Certainly not me.)
Converting characters from the Classic Marvel Superheroes RPG to the Marvel Universe RPG is pretty simple. The numerical range for most characters directly mappable into the other game with a minimal amount of trouble.
First we start off with the chart below. It is where all values are derived from in the conversion. Pretty straightforward.
MURPG Marvel Superheroes RPG
1 Feeble
2 Poor
3 Typical
4 Good
5 Excellent
6 Remarkable
7 Incredible
8 Amazing
9 Monstrous
10 Unearthly
Intelligence (Reason + Intuition + Psyche)/3
Strength-Strength
Agility-(Fighting + Agility)/2
Speed-Endurance
Durability-Endurance
Wealth-Resources
For Powers, compare to sample Actions and Modifiers.
Talents are rather tricky. Safest bet is to make the Action they translate to equal to the character's Intelligence.
