The Dirty Pair

Background: Kei and Yuri work for an organization called the Worlds Welfare Works Association (3WA or Three Double-u A). With mankind's rapid expansion into the galaxy his ability to deal with problems has lagged behind. The 3WA exists to provide Trouble Consultants to help solve problems when a planet's local authorities are incapable of handling the situation themselves. The 3WA provides TCs for just about any problem that can come up, from farming and terraforming to computer glitches and accounting to criminal investigations. Kei and Yuri, Trouble Consultant team code name Lovely Angels are criminal Trouble Consultants.

The nickname "Dirty Pair" is a rather unfortunate nom de guerre for the Lovely Angels, based upon their reputation. When a planetary government petitions the 3WA for help, the Association's central computer reviews all available information and selects the TC team most suited to the task; the petitioning government has no say in what team is assigned to them. It happens that every case the Angels have been sent on has turned into a major disaster, in addition to a solution to the case. In every instance the central computer has cleared the Angels of any culpability, lending credence to the duo's frequent cries, "it's not our fault!" Their cases would turn into disasters regardless of the team sent, otherwise the central computer would have pulled their IDs long ago, right? Of course this has no bearing on their public reputation.

Note: after checking numerous different sources, I've discovered that even the Japanese can't agree on Kei and Yuri's "vital measurements," so I've used the information that's presented in the Dirty Pair Mook, which matches what's displayed in the first episode of the TV series.

In the Takachiho novellas and Affair of Nolandia, Kei and Yuri together possess a clairvoyant talent that makes them indespensible to the 3WA as criminal Trouble Consultants. When close to a crime scene, they can pick up brief flashes of information about the crime. The information is often very sketchy, just brief images of potential clues that the local law enforcement agencies would never guess. But the information is never wrong.

Most of the animation, with the exception of Affair of Nolandia, simply ignores this aspect of their character. The Smith/Warren comic turns it into a joke, a stunt pulled by the Pair in an attempt to land cushy jobs in the 3WA.

Mughi
Mughi is an interesting compliment to the Lovely Angels. In Takachiho's original version and the Smith/Warren comic, Mughi is a sleek, vicious, cat-like killing machine. His claws can slice through hull metal, he has antennae that can manipulate electromagnetic radiation, and tentacles which give him manipulation equal to any human. He's also the last of a nearly extinct species, so there aren't any more where he came from.

The Pair is very glad they have Mughi. More than once he has flown in with the Lovely Angel to save their butts, dropping off vital equipment and providing air support.

The TV and OAV version is radically different. He's a genetic experiment made specifically for the Lovely Angels. He's just as intelligent, but instead of sleek and vicious, he's a lazy, cute ball of fur that provides technical support and comic relief, as well as being one very comfortable couch. He also has a total phobia of rats.

Shasti
Shasti was the 3WA's attempt to make a superhuman field agent. After they genetically engineered her, they equipped her with WarDrug gland implants, hardwired martial arts, and all the latest cyber-gear. Her personality was divided into four facets: Detective, Inquisitor, Combat, and Social. Created as a full grown woman in her early 20s, she was treated as a guinea pig half the time. Shasti began to grow sick of her life.

Her partner was Deidre, and they occasionally worked with the Dirty... uh, Lovely Angels on assignments. Even then, the Pair noticed she seemed a bit flaky. Her personality facets weren't switching correctly.

Finally, as part of a mission, she had to jack into a criminal's psychological profile in order to gain insight on how to catch him. She learned how to become free of her programming, and her personality facets finally fractured. She escaped, killing Deidre and critically injured the Pair. Now, she is a renegade, highly dangerous and with her own agenda.

When the Dirty Pair encountered her again after their fateful last meeting in 3WA, Shasti was manipulating two different terrorist groups aboard a new space pleasure cruiser. Shasti failed to warp out with the experimental warp drive and was left in the void of space. Her words after being picked up by the group who wanted the warp drive stolen: "38 seconds in hard vacuum..." cough up blood here "Those two need to DIE!"
