History

When Axel Asher was seven years old, he wandered into his parents' bedroom and found his kid sister playing with his father's gun. He scolded her, grabbed it away, and then heard a loud noise. He was very surprised when he looked down at his pants leg and saw it soaked with his blood. As he collapsed, the gravity of his situation eluded him. Instead he was glaring at his sister for having gotten him into trouble, and she at him for taking away the "toy". Since then Axel has had a slight limp, but he carried the anger and pain within him. It was the most traumatic thing that ever happened to him, until the Brothers appeared in his consciousness, with an emnity that made his sister's and his pale in comparison.

There have been any number of times when Axel has felt the need to move on, to roam, to continue his search for that goal he cannot even name. In the past, it's always been a more subtle feeling.

"Whoa. What'd you do to me?" asked Axel.

"Unleashed what's inside you," the bum replied. "Each of us chooses the guise best suited to who we are. This is mine," he said, indicating his guise as a bum. "That's yours. I told you I'm a shard of the brothers, just like you. I've been the keeper of the gateway between the two universes."

The bum showed Axel a box. "You see it as a box because that's what I want it to be. It might be something different for you, because you're next in the long succession of keepers. My time is almost up. You have to keep up the mantle. You have to become the Access."

After learning that he is the "gatekeeper" responsible for keeping the DC and Marvel Universes separate, Axel Asher is unable to accept the responsibility thrust upon him. Thus, the DC and Marvel Universes begin to cross over and eventually merge into the Amalgam Universe. Access is the only person to remain totally unchanged in the Amalgam Universe, and he remembers that there were once two distinct universes. Doctor Strangefate, the only other being who knows that the Amalgam Universe is not right, unsuccessfully attempts to prevent Access from sepearating the two universes.

After Access escapes from the clutches of Doctor Strangefate, he permanently separates the two universes (with the help of Captain America and Batman), thus bringing the Amalgam Universe to an abrupt end. Access resides in New York City in the Marvel Universe and has the ability to transport to any location and to other dimensions.

In Unlimited Access, Access is told by a future version of himself (Dark Access) that he is immortal and able to travel through time as well. Later, he finds that he also has the power to amalgamate characters from the DC and Marvel universes at will.

Appearances: DC Vs. Marvel #1-4, Dr Strangefate #1-2, Unlimited Access #1-4, All Access #1-4.

One with the Time stream

Waverider's Time Travel Power stems from his being composed of tachyons and is at one with the time stream. In addition to allowing Time Travel, this Power makes Ryder an energy being, with no need to eat, sleep, or breathe. He can survive indefinitely in any style environment including space, and is totally immune to gas and poison attacks. He can also use the power rank of Time Travel to resist any time-based attack.

Limitations: Cosmic Awareness can only be used to detect disturbances in the time stream.

Waverider cannot take other people or objects with him when he time travels, unless he is wearing the Linear Men Bracelet.

Postcognition and Precognition may only be used to view the past and future "histories" of other people, and Waverider must touch his target to use one of these powers.

The Linear Men

After his first encounter with the self-styled time monitors known as the Linear Men, Waverider was able to steal a time control bracelet from one of them. This bracelet gives the wearer-limited control over time, including the ability to put others in stasis.

Equipment: Linear Men Bracelet
EX material strength
Suspension SH-X (150)
Time Travel CL. 5000

The bracelet allows instantaneous communication with any other bracelet wearer, even across time and space.

Suspension can be used to put people and objects in stasis or stop time altogether. Waverider uses the rank of Suspension and must make a power feat roll against the Psyche of the target. If the target makes a Psyche feat roll, they are held in stasis for a number of rounds equal to the difference between his Psyche and the Suspension power rank. If the Psyche feat is failed, Waverider can put the target in stasis for as long as he likes, breaking the stasis at any time.

The bracelet can also be used to stop time; effectively putting the entire world on "hold" while some important task is completed. It is not known how long this effect can be maintained, but presumably it puts great strain on the energy reserves of the Vanishing Point. Waverider himself is immune to this effect, as are the other Linear Men.

The combination of the bracelet's Powers and Waverider's produces some unusual effects. While he is wearing the bracelet, Waverider can carry other objects and persons with him through the time stream. He can also absorb energy used for time effects (such as stasis beams) and use it to augment his own Powers.

In game terms, Waverider gains the Nemesis when any time-related attack is used against him. The rank for Nemesis is equal to the time-related power that attacked him. The new power can only be used once, and must have an effect somehow related to time manipulation. For instance, Waverider can use this energy to pull a person out of the past, by mimicking the Dimension Travel (Summoning) Power. After several more encounters with the Linear Men, Waverider decided that their mission was so close to his own that he should join them.

Bracelet Limitations: Time Travel only allows travel to and from locations of existing time disturbances or the Vanishing Point.

Drawbacks: Exile (voluntary, from his own time); Guilt; Married.

Talents: Quantum Physics, Super heroes.
Contacts: Linear Men, JLA, Superman.

Occupation: Guardian of the Time stream
Motivation: Responsibility of Power
Former Occupation: Scientist
Group Affiliation: Linear Men
Base of Operations: Vanishing Point
First Appearance: Armageddon 2001 #1 (May 1991)
Known Relatives: Janet (wife), Alex (son), Karen (daughter)
Appearances: Armageddon 2001 (May-October 1991); "Time and Time Again Again" - Superman #61 (November 1991); "Time Ryders" - Superman #73 (November 1992).

Powers/Abilities

Monarch's experiment turned Matthew Ryder into Waverider, a being of pure energy, constructed of faster-than-light particles called tachyons. This transformation also merged Ryder with the time stream, granting him a number of time-related Powers as well.

As an energy being, Waverider can become intangible, and can easily pass through solid objects (Dispersal). He can alter his electromagnetic emissions to appear as another person (Chameleon) or become totally Invisible. Waverider can also generate Energy Blasts powerful enough to demolish a steel wall, and can propel himself across interstellar distances at twice the speed of light (Flight).

Waverider can ride the time stream, granting him access to the past and future (Time Travel). The limits of this Power are not known, but he has traveled back to the days of the dinosaurs, forward to his own time of 2030, and "sideways" to the Vanishing Point, home of the Linear Men (see "The Linear Men" below).

His connection to the time stream gives Waverider the ability to look into a person's past history or most probable future merely by touching him (Postcognition, Precognition). This connection also makes him very sensitive to disturbances in the space-time continuum (Awareness).

Matthew Ryder is an accomplished Scientist, specializing in the field of quantum physics (Scholar).

History

Ten years from now, Earth's heroes were fated to die, betrayed and murdered by one of their own, who would then cement control over the Earth under the enigmatic name "Monarch."

As a child, Matthew Ryder had been saved from the rubble of a collapsed building by a superhero - but blinded by the sudden light, he had been unable to recognize who it was. Decades later, inspired by this pre-Monarch memory, and driven to desperation in the rigid, authoritarian world of Monarch's reign, Ryder tricked his way into a time-travel experiment which changed him into Waverider, able both to travel through time and to see into a person's probable future with a touch. Arriving in our time, he searched for the one who would eventually become the Monarch (see Armageddon 2001).

Once the crisis was averted, and Waverider had rescued his younger self from a collapsed building, he found a group of "time police" who called themselves the Linear Men, originally led by the Matthew Ryder from the new, free timeline. They clashed a number of times over goals; the Linear Men were devoted to protecting history, whereas Waverider was willing to alter history for the sake of the people within it. Eventually they came to an agreement, and Waverider joined the team.

During the Zero Hour crisis, Monarch discovered he had absorbed the essence of his former partner, and used this knowledge to become Extant. Extant subsequently battled and absorbed Waverider. In order to resolve the crisis, the alternate Matthew Ryder became the new Waverider in his alter ego's place.

Personality/Role-playing

Matthew Ryder is a strong and independent person, determined to help others regardless of personal sacrifice. His life in Monarch's dark future taught him that freedom is something you have to fight for, and this lesson drives him onward.

Although he managed to prevent the future of his adult life, Waverider still suffers from tremendous feelings of guilt. His attempt to stop Monarch resulted in untold chronal damage, including the loss of thousands of potential lives that will never be.

Waverider still does not know the full extent of his powers, but does not let this lack of knowledge stop his crusade against injustice. He tends to come off as hasty and reckless as a result of his inexperience. Presumably, Waverider will become more cautious as he spends time with the Linear Men, gaining insight into the time stream's "big picture."

Using Waverider in Adventures

Although Waverider is clearly too powerful to be used as a Player Character, he can be a gateway to adventures through time. He might encounter the PCs in connection with a disturbance in time that he needs help to correct. Such an adventure can be a cosmic-scale conflict involving many heroes, or a one-on-one covert effort.

Another interesting possibility is to use Waverider to show Player Heroes their possible futures. This might even develop into a game or mini-campaign reflecting an alternate future timeline, where the Players play old versions of their Characters or their children.

Subplots

Waverider is involved in an ongoing Enemies Subplot with Monarch, the ruthless dictator of his alternate future. Waverider is currently unaware of Monarch's whereabouts in time.
