Here are a couple ideas for the overall background of your gaming universe. One uses the pre-Crisis DC idea of a multiverse of infinite earths.
The other gives a possible world history if the Marvel and DC universes were meshed into one. Not an amalgamation of characters like in the comics, but as if all of the Marvel universe and all of the DC universe lived in the same universe.

For something different, here's a background I worked on to convert from Palladium to MSH. It took quite awhile to do. I found this writeup on the web and did the conversion. The race is called The Syrax, and I'm sure there's any number of ways to use them in your campaign.
