Brigade was first assembled by Battlestone, the former leader of Youngblood, as a team of mercenaries doing jobs for people around the world. Originally the team consisted of Boone, Lethal, and Kayo but after a failure to recover the Orb for Jacob Marlowe (this is the same Orb that the WildCATs were after in issues 1-4) Battlestone dissolved the team.
After a while Stone and Kayo decided to put the team back together and make it what Stone had wanted to make Youngblood. So they recruited five newly emerged superhumans named Seahawk, Coldsnap, Atlas, Stasis and Thermal and began training them. However, only a few weeks later they found them transported to an alien world fighting for their life against the evil prince Genocide. This battle eventually ended in death for both Genocide and Atlas.
Returning to Earth after several months in space, Brigade was ambushed by Bloodstrike in their Malibu headquarters. This eventually became known as the Blood Brothers incident when it was learned that Bloodstrikes leader Cabbot was Battlestone's brother. Casualties include Stasis who was killed, Coldsnap who was forever changed into an " ice giant," and Kayo who quit the team to repay a debt of honor in Japan. It was during this incident that Boone rejoined the team.
Following this incident Brigade relocated to an island base in the Caribbean and became involved in a war between Nuport, an undersea city, and the evil technomancer Worlock. It was also at this time that Seahawk and Coldsnap were reunited with their father, a famous oceanographer who had spent his life searching for Nuport, and learned the origin of their powers.
After Worlock's defeat the team returned to their base only to encounter Battlestone's father, the nearly omnipotent Quantum. He tried to recruit Stone for his crusade against humans on behalf of nu-gens (a fancy term for mutants) But were eventually stopped by the combined forces of Brigade, Bloodstrike, Youngblood's away team, and the mysterious New Men.

Bloodstone's superhuman strength is enough for him to support the full weight of a bus, and he's extremely difficult to kill as well as able to tolerate huge amounts of pain. In his 1st appearance in Brigade #1 he survives an explosion capable of bringing down an entire skyscraper, as well as the resultant impact of the building's crashing to the ground.
History:
Colonels John Helix Stone's past before his involvement in the Project: Born Again program is relatively unknown. What is known is that a young John Stone had a relatively blissful
youth raised by his father in a refuge for superhuman's. Eventually the utopian ideal that was said refuge came under attack from an unknown source, and the result was the death of John's mother, possibly at the hand of his father.
It is assumed that this is what lead John to enlist in the military which lead to his death at the hands of the man that would be known as Dutch, and his being brought back to life as one of the 1st metahumans' revived by the government program "Project: Born Again". Stone (under the name Battlestone) became a leader of Youngblood, and during a mission in 1988 to Kuwaiti, Battlestone killed a subordinate who disobeyed orders, possibly accidentally.
This lead to Stone's dismissal from Youngblood, his return to civilian life, and his discovery of the atrocities the government body in control of the Youngblood program were committing. Battlestone became a solo operative occasionally enlisting the aid of Lethal and Kayo for mission's of a mercenary type, but found it unfulfilling in face of the Youngblood program's constant publicity when he was aware of the operatives having their memories tampered with, and new recruits being brought into a program that used Genetic altering, and mind control techniques on unwilling (and unaware) operatives.
From this bore the forming of Brigade a superteam brought about upon the discovery of the Barros brothers (Coldsnap, and Seahawk) when their gaining of superhuman powers became public news. Stone wanted to keep the brothers away from the manipulations of the government, and their fortune helped make Brigade a functional team that eventually grew to include Thermal, Atlas, and Stasis.
The teams 1st big tragedy was the death of Atlas on the alien planet of D'Vor. This lead to Battlestone withdrawing from the team, and when Brigade returned to earth the new operations team of Project: Born Again, Bloodstrike was sent to put an end to Battlestones operations resulting in the death of Stasis, and the physical transformation of Coldsnap.
Given a new purpose for leading his team Battlestone brought his team victory in part by enlisting the aid of Boone. Brigade went on to become a successful team, but again tragedy struck in the form of betrayal from within the team. Boone turned out to be a spy sent to destroy Battlestone , and Thermal who had been in the team initially as a reporter looking to expose Stone had just come to believe in his cause enough to erase her files on Stone was attacked by the traitor Boone.
The resulting battle Led the team to believe that Stone was dead, killed by a massive suicide bomb by Boone when in fact it was a teleportation device that was accompanied by an explosion. Brigade continued on under the guidance of Seahawk, and Battlestone went on to bringing down the evil in the youngblood program.
Getting his military status reinstated Battlestone became the Director of Youngblood's operations which brought him into conflict with Shaft on many occasions even though Battlestone greatly respected Shaft's role on the team. His usual misdirected ideas lead to his directing Diehard as team leader and although he directed the team through many successful missions the team was eventually let go by the government during the trial of Knightsabre over the death of Riptide.
Battlestone's current whereabouts' and activities are unknown, but he's undoubtedly working for the government still. Battlestone is not connected with the new Brigade team.
Description:
See illustration. Battlestone is a large grimacing figure with stark white hair usually kept in a pony tail with a miniature skull at the tip of his widow's peak. His skim has a yellow jaundiced appearance as he's been brought back from the dead. His costume is white and blue
with the center line being white, and his arms and out side of his abdomen and legs being a navy blue.
Personality:
Stone has an abrasive manner, but is still quite charismatic as he's been able to win over many a persons faith in his cause. Battlestone is often described as misguided, and rightfully so. He is a bit of a ruthless ass.
