REVELATIONS
Naked Companions
(& Doctors!)
Being a family show, Doctor Who could hardly be expected to have its actors running around exposing themselves left, right and centre (despite what some TV critics claimed). Away from Doctor Who, however, actors and actresses frequently had to undress whenever the piece they were appearing in at the time required. Not all of them did, just as not every member of the acting profession has exposed themselves for their art, but there were more than a few, and not just the women either! No doubt many of the hundreds of actors and actresses to have appeared in Doctor Who during its 26 year run did reveal bits of their more intimate parts for the camera, Ingrid Pitt and Kate O'Mara leap to mind for instance, but, for the sake of brevity, this concentrates on those who were Doctor Who regulars.
Even though Doctor Who was supposed to remain respectable, the show did have its moments. Maureen O'Brien was an early starter in The Romans, leaning forward too quickly in a loose-necked toga, whilst Wendy Padbury and Katy Manning flashed their knickers on several occasions, proving how impractical mini skirts are when fighting space monsters. Lis Sladen had her M&S frillies revealed for all in The Ark in Space, courtesy of Tom Baker, who was at it again in Underworld, severely embarrassing one young extra whose bum was inadvertently exposed when her costume rode up (it's near the end of Episode 4 - just look how flustered she is). Louise Jameson's Leela costumes, particularly the pale one, gave her cause for concern on a number of occasions, and we all remember the scene in The Talons of Weng-Chiang! Sarah Sutton's finale in Terminus is remembered more for her low-cut top and underwear flashing scenes than the drama of Steve Gallagher's narrative, whilst Nicola Bryant's bikini-clad debut in Planet of Fire remains a prominent part of Doctor Who legend.

Maureen O'Brien (Vicki 1965) briefly bared her boobs in a bedroom scene as Joan in She'll be Wearing Pink Pyjamas (1984), a film about eight middle-aged women who decide to tackle a tough survival course. She also showed more than she bargained for as bra-less Ruth Millar in the Forbidden Fruit episode of Taggart (1994), emerging from the sea with her blouse soaked and transparent. |
Anneke Wills (Polly 1966-67) was topless under a bedsheet as Angela in The Pleasure Girls (1965), a film about a group of city girls sharing a house in Swinging Sixties London.
| Deborah Watling (Victoria 1967-68), the previously demure Miss Waterfield, became a serial stripper. She appeared as Nurse Emma Livingstone in two episodes of LWT's Doctor in Charge (1972), performing a striptease in her first episode, though keeping her back to the camera and wearing pasties. In the film That'll Be The Day (1973), she played David Essex's character's first sexual conquest, Sandra, having her right breast exposed before discreetly removing her knickers. As nurse Norma Baker in the LWT series Danger UXB (1979), she appeared topless on several occasions. | |

Wendy Padbury (Zoe 1968-69) briefly exposed her breasts during a ritual rape scene in Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), at the end of which she was stabbed! |
| Katy Manning (Jo 1971-73) made several half-naked appearances in the Thames drama series Man At The Top (1970) as one of the regular conquests of the lead character Joe Lampton. In the Big Elephant episode of Graham Williams' detective series Target (1977), she appeared topless for a few seconds during a bedroom scene. Ironically, she was practically the only female cast member not to remove her clothes in either 1974 films Eskimo Nell or Don't Just Lie There, Say Something! She is also "remembered" for appearing nude in Girl Illustrated magazine in 1977 (mainly by men who would have been too young to buy the mag at the time), but less remembered for her nude set in Penthouse seven years later, probably because it didn't feature any Daleks! | |
Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah-Jane 1973-76) briefly (accidentally?) exposed her left boob whilst climbing out of a window in Send in the Girls (1978), a Granada TV series about a group of sales promotion girls.
 |
Louise Jameson (Leela 1977-78) appeared topless in Disciple of Death (1972), a film she'd rather forget about, in which she played a young virgin who is ritually sacrificed. As Blanche Simmons in the BBC wartime drama Tenko (1981), she appeared topless in a shower scene with most of the rest of the cast. |
| Mary Tamm (Romana 1978-79) twice appeared naked in film shower scenes. As Ginny Pageant in the horror-comedy Tales that Witness Madness (1973), her naked back and bum is seen shortly before she is stabbed to death. As Sigi in The Odessa File (1974), she is obscured by a frosted glass door. In the Lick of Paint episode of The Bill (2001), a nude painting of her character Moira Sutherland was exhibited and eventually vandalised. It's highly unlikely though that Ms.Tamm actually posed for the painting. Pictures from the film Sweeney 2 (1978) claiming to be of Mary are in fact of another, similar looking, actress. | |
 | Lalla Ward (Romana 1979-81) bared her breasts during a sex scene as Tessa Carmichael in the film Got It Made (1974). In 1978, this was re-edited and released as a low-budget porn film entitled Sweet Virgin. Extra scenes which appear to show Lalla totally naked actually feature another "actress". When stills of these extra scenes appeared in Club International magazine claiming to be of her, she successfully sued. As Margaret in Rosebud (1975), her naked back is seen. A photo frequently touted as being of a bare breasted Lalla in the film Vampire Circus is in fact another actress with long blonde hair - and a bigger bust! Although Lalla did appear in Vampire Circus, the only things she exposed were her teeth! |
| Janet Fielding (Tegan 1981-84) appeared topless in the stageplay The Warp in 1979, and posed for publicity photos wearing a transparent plastic basque. | |
 |
Nicola Bryant (Peri 1984-86) actually had most of her most revealing scenes in Doctor Who - Planet of Fire. As call-girl Beverley in the black comedy Parting Shots, she almost removed her bra but was stopped by Chris Rea's character! She also posed in various stages of undress for numerous publicity photos but never revealed anything untoward. |
NUDE DOCTORS!
Tom Baker (The Doctor 1974-81) did a full-frontal nude scene in the 1971 Franco-Italian film adaptation of Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" entitled I Racconti di Canterbury as Jenkin, standing up in a tin bath and being spied on by two obviously titillated women.
Sylvester McCoy (The Doctor 1987-89) appeared tackle-out in the stageplay Having a Ball, pictures from which were plastered across the tabloid press after his appointment as the 7th Doctor.
