SUSAN
Played by:- Carole Ann Ford
Appeared in:- An Unearthly Child, 100,000 B.C., The Mutants, Inside the Spaceship, Marco Polo, The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Sensorites, The Reign of Terror, Planet of Giants, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Five Doctors (52 episodes)
The Doctor's original travelling companion who he claimed was his granddaughter. Well you would, wouldn't you? A seasoned time traveller and probably not of this Earth - if she was she must have left when very young. Eventually met a guy she wanted to stay with and tearfully gave up her itinerant lifestyle...only for it to be rudely interrupted twenty years later by Borusa.
IAN CHESTERTON
Played by:- William Russell
and
BARBARA WRIGHT
Played by: Jacqueline Hill
Appeared in:- An Unearthly Child, 100,000 B.C., The Mutants, Inside the Spaceship, Marco Polo, The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Sensorites, The Reign of Terror, Planet of Giants, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Rescue, The Romans, The Web Planet, The Crusades, The Space Museum, The Chase (77 episodes (Ian), 75 episodes (Barbara))
Two of Susan's teachers from Coal Hill School who, demonstrating an extraordinary interest in one of their pupils, tracked her down to an old junkyard from where they were whisked off into a series of amazing adventures. Despite seeming to enjoy the experience, both seized the chance to return home at the first opportunity, although they would then have had to explain where they'd spent the intervening two years! Most education authorities would have given them the boot as soon as they dared return to work.
VICKI
Played by:- Maureen O'Brien
Appeared in:- The Rescue, The Romans, The Web Planet, The Crusades, The Space Museum, The Chase, The Time Meddler, Galaxy Four, The Myth Makers (38 episodes)
Stranded on the planet Dido after the ship that was taking her and her father to a new life on Astra crashed, and her sole surviving fellow passenger was exposed as a mass murderer, Vicki jumped at the chance of joing the Tardis crew. It was either that or a long wait for the rescue ship. Like her predecessor Susan, she eventually gave it all up for the love of a decent bloke, although she could have found better circumstances in which to do it!
STEVEN TAYLOR
Played by:- Peter Purves
Appeared in:- The Chase, The Time Meddler, Galaxy Four, The Myth Makers, The Dalek Masterplan, The Massacre, The Ark, The Celestial Toymaker, The Gunfighters, The Savages (45 episodes)
Stranded on Mechanus after his spaceship crashed, Steven suddenly found himself homeless when the city he had been imprisoned in was destroyed by the Daleks. Seeking refuge in the Tardis, he found himself the sometimes unwilling hired-hand of a man who couldn't seem to stay out of trouble. After enjoying the company of no less than four female travelling companions, he unexpectedly found himself chosen to lead a united society of Elders and Savages on a distant planet in the distant future.
DODO CHAPLET
Played by:- Jackie Lane
Appeared in:- The Massacre, The Ark, The Celestial Toymaker, The Gunfighters, The Savages, The War Machines (19 episodes)
Probably a direct descendent of a girl the Doctor and Steven had met in 16th Century Paris, Dodo made the classic mistake of thinking the Tardis was a police callbox after witnessing a road accident on Wimbledon Common (those Wombles never could get the hang of driving!). Straight away she almost managed to wipe out the entire human race by infecting the crew of the Ark with her cold, then demonstrated an amazing inability to stick to one accent before being taken over by a megalomaniac computer and sent to the country to recover.
POLLY
Played by:- Anneke Wills
and
BEN JACKSON
Played by:- Michael Craze
Appeared in:- The War Machines, The Smugglers, The Tenth Planet, The Power of the Daleks, The Highlanders, The Underwater Menace, The Moonbase, The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones (36 episodes)
Young couple from the so-called "Swinging Sixties" who barged into the Tardis to return Dodo's key and found themselves whisked off to 17th Century Cornwall. Like the earlier duo of Ian and Barbara, Ben and Polly seemed to relish the experience of travel through time and space, well, mostly, but jumped at the chance to jump ship and return to their mundane previous existences as soon as it came along.
JAMIE McCRIMMON
Played by:- Frazer Hines (& Hamish Wilson in 2 episodes of The Mind Robber)
Appeared in:- The Highlanders, The Underwater Menace, The Moonbase, The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones, The Evil of the Daleks, The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Abominable Snowmen, The Ice Warriors, The Enemy of the World, The Web of Fear, Fury from the Deep, The Wheel in Space, The Dominators, The Mind Robber, The Invasion, The Krotons, The Seeds of Death, The Space Pirates, The War Games, The Two Doctors (116 episodes)
Invited to accompany the Doctor, Ben and Polly after his friends and family had either been massacred or fled into exile. Although a little thick even by 18th Century standards (apparently), he coped admirably well with his unimaginable lifestyle and would probably have still been with the Doctor at the end had the Time Lords not stepped in and kindly sent him back home - to a land where his friends and family had either been massacred or fled into exile...! Accompanied three of the tastiest birds to set foot in the Tardis.
VICTORIA WATERFIELD
Played by:- Deborah Watling
Appeared in:- The Evil of the Daleks, The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Abominable Snowmen, The Ice Warriors, The Enemy of the World, The Web of Fear, Fury from the Deep (41 episodes)
Daughter of a 19th Century scientist and part-time antiques dealer. Became the Doctor's ward after the death of her father and proceeded to be frightened witless almost constantly until she decided she'd had enough and opted to settle down with the Harrises in late 20th Century England. Imagine the confusion that would have caused. "Born?" "1850"!
ZOE HERIOT
Played by:- Wendy Padbury
Appeared in:- The Wheel in Space, The Dominators, The Mind Robber, The Invasion, The Krotons, The Seeds of Death, The Space Pirates, The War Games (48 episodes)
Astro-physicist working as a librarian on board the Wheel space station. One of a handful of survivors of the Cyberman attack, she stowed away onboard the Tardis in a quest for adventure. Wearer of probably the trendiest outfits found in the Tardis wardrobe, she was eventually returned to the Wheel with all her memories of her adventures with Jamie and the Doctor wiped by the Time Lords. Evil sods!
LIZ SHAW
Played by:- Caroline John
Appeared in:- Spearhead from Space, Doctor Who and the Silurians, The Ambassadors of Death, Inferno (25 episodes)
Unceremoniously drafted into UNIT as their Scientific Advisor, then just as unceremoniously demoted to assistant scientific advisor by the Doctor's arrival. Technically the Doctor's first assistant as opposed to companion, Liz never set foot inside the Tardis and left after a handful of present-day Earthbound adventures, presumably to return to Cambridge University.
JO GRANT
Played by:- Katy Manning
Appeared in:- Terror of the Autons, The Mind of Evil, The Claws of Axos, Colony in Space, The Dæmons, Day of the Daleks, The Curse of Peladon, The Sea Devils, The Mutants, The Time Monster, The Three Doctors, Carnival of Monsters, Frontier in Space, Planet of the Daleks, The Green Death (77 episodes)
The Doctor's second official assistant who soon became a time-travelling companion. Got the job as PA to UNIT's scientific advisor despite being woefully underqualified thanks to an uncle with influence in these matters. Managed to be propositioned by a king and a young soldier before deciding she wanted to settle down with an eccentric Welsh scientist, only the third companion ever to dive into wedlock straight from the Tardis.
SARAH-JANE SMITH
Played by:- Elisabeth Sladen
Appeared in:- The Time Warrior, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Death to the Daleks, The Monster of Peladon, Planet of the Spiders, Robot, The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment, Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen, Terror of the Zygons, Planet of Evil, Pyramids of Mars, The Android Invasion, The Brain of Morbius, The Seeds of Doom, Masque of Mandragora, The Hand of Fear, The Five Doctors (81 episodes)
Freelance journalist with a nose for a story who nevertheless got entirely the wrong idea about the Doctor and stowed away on board the Tardis to prove it. Enjoyed a fairly lengthy stint with the Doctor through two incarnations, despite occasionally threatening to leave. Finally her bluff was called when the Doctor was recalled to Gallifrey and he dumped her in a quiet residential street probably miles from home with no bus fare. Having got used to living in one place in one time zone again, she was rudely kidnapped by Borusa and reunited with her original Doctor.
HARRY SULLIVAN
Played by:- Ian Marter
Appeared in:- Robot, The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment, Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen, Terror of the Zygons, The Android Invasion (27 episodes)
Surgeon-Lieutenant of the Royal Navy, seconded to UNIT. Refused to believe the Doctor and Sarah's claims about the Tardis's abilities until he was deposited in a deserted space station thousands of years in the future. Ironically accident-prone despite his vocation, Harry was used more to inflict physical damage than patch it up. Another who was more than satisfied to give up time travelling when the opportunity arose.
LEELA
Played by:- Louise Jameson
Appeared in:- The Face of Evil, The Robots of Death, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, Horror of Fang Rock, The Invisible Enemy, Image of the Fendahl, The Sun Makers, Underworld, The Invasion of Time (40 episodes)
Sneaked on board the Tardis after the Doctor had managed to resolve the problems that had plagued her tribe for centuries, and thus probably caused more problems for her tribe as she appeared to be the only female! The Doctor obviously saw her as a challenge, an exercise in civilising the savage so to speak, although she jumped ship before he'd had a chance to eradicate her barbarian ways to get married to a Gallifreyan soldier.
ROMANADVORATRELUNDAR
Played by:- Mary Tamm & Lalla Ward
Appeared in:- The Ribos Operation, The Pirate Planet, The Stones of Blood, The Androids of Tara, The Power of Kroll, The Armageddon Factor, Destiny of the Daleks, City of Death, The Creature from the Pit, Nightmare of Eden, The Horns of Nimon, The Leisure Hive, Meglos, Full Circle, State of Decay, Warrior's Gate, The Five Doctors (67 episodes)
Newly graduated Time Lady placed on board the Tardis by the White Guardian to assist the Doctor in his search for the Key to Time. With that task completed, she immediately changed her physical appearance several times, eventually sticking with a copy of Princess Astra of Atrios, probably in a bid to avoid being recognised by the Time Lords. When they eventually managed to track her down, she opted to stay at the Gateway between E- and N-Space to help the Tharils fight slavery. She also got custody of K9 (Mark 2).
ADRIC
Played by:- Matthew Waterhouse
Appeared in:- Full Circle, State of Decay, Warrior's Gate, The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Four to Doomsday, Kinda, The Visitation, Black Orchid, Earthshock (42 episodes)
Helped the Doctor overturn centuries of Alzarian ignorance over their heritage, then stowed away onboard the Tardis to avoid returning to Teradon with his people. A rather obnoxious little twerp who could probably have done with a good slap every now-and-again, he ended his life spectacularly after refusing to be defeated by a mathematical problem, and inadvertently ended the lives of several million innocent dinosaurs.
NYSSA
Played by:- Sarah Sutton
Appeared in:- The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Four to Doomsday, Kinda, The Visitation, Black Orchid, Earthshock, Time Flight, Arc of Infinity, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead, Terminus (43 episodes)
Privileged daughter of one of the Consuls of the Traken Union. After being left orphaned by the Master, she was mysteriously transported to Logopolis to become the sensible member of the Doctor's entourage. Having remained faithful to the Doctor through several adventures, she suddenly developed a flair for fashion before throwing it all away to research a cure for Lazar's Disease on an ancient space station manned by an all male crew. Who said she was innocent!
TEGAN JOVANKA
Played by:- Janet Fielding
Appeared in:- Logopolis, Castrovalva, Four to Doomsday, Kinda, The Visitation, Black Orchid, Earthshock, Time Flight, Arc of Infinity, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead, Terminus, Enlightenment, The King's Demons, The Five Doctors, Warriors from the Deep, The Awakening, Frontios, Resurrection of the Daleks (62 episodes)
Gobby Australian air hostess who unexpectedly became a member of the Tardis crew after doing a Dodo. After spending several adventures whinging about having to get to Heathrow in time for her first flight, she actually managed to get home only to find herself unemployed shortly after. As luck would have it, her path crossed that of the Doctor's fairly soon and she was able to forget about life on the dole for a while longer. Eventually, the sight of several humans and Daleks being killed by a mutant virus persuaded her that maybe a life of signing-on was preferable.
VISLOR TURLOUGH
Played by:- Mark Strickson
Appeared in:- Mawdryn Undead, Terminus, Enlightenment, The King's Demons, The Five Doctors, Warriors from the Deep, The Awakening, Frontios, Resurrection of the Daleks, Planet of Fire (31 episodes)
Exiled to Earth after a coup on his home planet and suffering the lifestyle of an English public schoolboy, Turlough was recruited by a vengeful Black Guardian to kill the Doctor. Luckily, he was utterly inept at the task in hand and became a willing, if slightly strange, member of the Tardis crew. A chance encounter with his long lost brother led to him returning home having found his exile had been rescinded.
PERI BROWN
Played by:- Nicola Bryant
Appeared in:- Planet of Fire, The Caves of Androzani, The Twin Dilemma, Attack of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos, The Mark of the Rani, The Two Doctors, Timelash, Revelation of the Daleks, The Trial of a Time Lord (33 episodes)
Saved from drowning by an uncharacteristically heroic Turlough, Peri was rudely snatched from her privileged American background to become the object of desire for countless slavvering aliens. Sadly, unlike most of her predecessors, her departure from the Doctor's company was far from happy, although she did end up as King Yrcanos' Queen. Whether this was back on Yrcanos' home planet (as believed by Doctor Who Magazine), or as his wrestling manager in California (as stated in the novel) we don't know. Nothing was ever specified on screen.
MEL BUSH
Played by:- Bonnie Langford
Appeared in:- The Trial of a Time Lord, Time and the Rani, Paradise Towers, Delta and the Bannermen, Dragonfire (20 episodes)
Probably the most irritating companion the Doctor ever took under his wing. An obsession with keeping fit and the most grating scream ever heard belied the fact that she was supposed to be a computer programmer from a quiet village in south-east England. Maybe it was the thought of returning to that which persuaded her to throw in her lot with the utterly unscrupulous Sabalom Glitz in a far distant future.
ACE
Played by:- Sophie Aldred
Appeared in:- Dragonfire, Remembrance of the Daleks, The Happiness Patrol, Silver Nemesis, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Battlefield, Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric, Survival (31 episodes)
Problem child who mysteriously managed to conjure up a one-way ticket to the distant future with a home-made explosive. Continued to demonstrate an early version of girl-power throughout her stint with the Doctor and undoubtedly inspired the current trend of ladette-ishness which has young women drinking heavily in pubs, getting into fights and throwing up on the pavement. Mind you, she could always blame her background...
