In Old Hawaii ,before the islands were united by Kamehameha, a young Kamehameha ventured out with the idea of hurting innocent people. Two fishermen were out that night and saw the future ruler of Hawaii, not knowing who he was used a canoe paddle and struck him once on the head. With the one blow, the paddle splinted. The two fishermen ran and left the unconcious Kamehameha. Now if it was he who was in the fishermen's place he would not have spared their lives, but since they did , he declared that no one may harm an innocent at all, espically at night, if they did the punishment would be death. So the canoe paddle has become a sign of safe passage, espically thru the darkness of night.
