Hawaiian Quilt Block-for crochet or cross stitch
Ti©1999RDS
The Ti plant may be one of the most versatile plants found here in the islands. It's uses are many and can be seen through out Hawaii and Hawaiian culture past and present. Gifts to the Hawaiian fire goddess Pele were wrapped in the Ti leaf and placed at the site of an active volcano. Several hula halau's, (hula schools), still practice this tradition as a form of respect to their culture. Other uses include wrapping different foods for cooking in underground pits which are lined in the ti leaves as well.
