Description: Rupert Giles is a Watcher, sent to Sunnydale to keep an eye on the Hellmouth, along with fellow Watcher Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, who is currently overseeing the Slayer's training. Not long after his assignment there, Giles found himself with a charge of his own, not yet Chosen Slayer-hopeful Faith. Using personal contacts, he arranged a low-rent house in a quiet part of town for the girl.

He finds himself often at odds with Wesley, due for the most part to their similarities, though neither one would admit this, if they acknowledge it at all. They are both British, and close-lipped, and overly attentive to detail. These are typical character traits for a Watcher.

What is not typical is that Rupert Giles dropped out of Oxford many years ago to join a small occult group who would dabble in dangerous spells, and by his violent tendencies earned himself the nickname 'Ripper'. Eventually, they took to raising the demon Eyghon, which caused much trouble - including loss of life to some of the group. This trauma eventually showed Giles back to the right path, and he regained his more stodgy attitudes once more.

But sadly this was not to last. He fell in love with local technopagan Jenny Calendar (also known to her people, the Kalderash, as Janna) and when she died and was made into a vampire, he could not break off the relationship. He hid this from his associates, carrying on a secret tryst with the vampiress. Her new abilities from the demon blood cast some kind of spell (whether mystical, mental or physical) over him, and he became her informant, giving her sensitive information from meetings with the Slayer Squad. Eventually, he was discovered by Wesley and Cordelia, and fled to join the vampires fully (Altered to Fit).

At one time, he had a very close relationship with Faith. He cared for her, training her and looking after her well-being, but when he made the final decision to leave the good guys behind, he lost what was left of his humanity. For weeks he had been growing farther and farther from her emotionally, trying to distance himself so she would not be hurt when the inevitable final betrayal occurred. But it was sooner than he thought, and she was devastated when she found out what he had done. This did not stop him from beating her so severely that Faith barely made it out alive. Truly the man that was once Rupert Giles is gone, though who can say for how long?

Being a Watcher runs in Giles' family, as it does with most in the line of Watchers. His father was a Watcher, and his paternal grandmother. Despite early aspirations towards the exciting career of fighter pilot (or grocer) he was destined to become a Watcher, and by choice, a librarian also. Now his choices seem to have abandoned his destiny once again, though he recovered it once before. Maybe there is still hope.

But, for now, the Ripper is back and there's no holds barred. Vampires can be dangerous opponents, but a man who was once your friend is worse. Who will stand up to the G-man now?

Technical: Rupert Giles created by Joss Whedon, played by Anthony Stewart Head.
