The Trainee
Name: FaithBorn: Boston, MA. Fall 1980 Occupation: Student at Sunnydale High. Trainee Slayer. Hair: Brown Eyes: Brown Soundbite: "If it comes to it, we'll take 'em all on together. You an' me." [Restoration] Description: The best friend of the Slayer, Faith is one of those girls with the potential to become Slayers, born with the specific genetic predisposition, but not yet Chosen. She is in training, though, just in case it should happen. But that would mean the death of Cordelia, and Faith would rather that not happen. Faith has had a troubled life. Never really knowing her father, she grew up under the care of her mother. However, Mom died when Faith was not yet ten years old, and she was taken under the wing of a British stranger she would later learn was a Watcher. This woman continued to raise Faith, teaching her about her destiny, and her duty. Faith grew very fond of her Watcher, but the woman was killed in a random vampire attack and the not-yet-Slayer was left alone yet again. But the Watchers' Council had another tutor in mind, one Rupert Giles currently assigned to Sunnydale, California, to guard against the Mouth of Hell. Faith moved across the country to the west coast to be trained there, along with the current Slayer. The Council evidently believed that a group environment would be more suitable - and perhaps that their forces should concentrate at the Hellmouth, since that's what the enemy was doing. Since Giles' rebellion (Altered to Fit) she has had to share Wesley as a Watcher - a man whose talents she is at first dubious of. She apparently has an uncle in the area whom she is acquainted with, although this may or may not be an actual blood relative. The house provided for Faith is a low rent place, arranged by her Watcher, Rupert Giles. She has in the past been very close to him, although after he beat her nearly to death (Altered to Fit) this naturally changed - though she finds herself unable to hurt him still.
One young man has challenged this however, a guy by the name of Fame Nelson. Despite his ridiculous moniker (though Faith claims to think it's cute) when she saved his life in Fallen Angel, they seemed to be instantly attracted to one another. This only increased with time as they continued to associate with each other, Fame eventually being absorbed into the Slayer Squad. She made no move towards a relationship with him, but Xander's (irrational?) jealousy and accusations drove her to break up with her boyfriend (The Blood-Dimmed Tide) thus leaving her the option of dating Fame. In a quite unusual situation, this trainee Slayer is sent out occasionally on missions, and patrols and the like, against the forces of evil. She is competent enough, and the need is dire enough, that the Watchers permit (and even encourage) this, despite the dangers inherent. Faith may not have the immense strength or skill possessed by a Slayer, but her raw talent and rage (and love for the kill) make her effective nonetheless. Although the non-Slayer had been in Sunnydale only about three months or so at the beginning of the series (at least seven by the end), she has fast worked her way into the hearts of the residents of the Hellmouth. She is close with Cordelia, although not being in the popular group at school lessens the amount of free time they spend together. Her boyfriend, Xander Harris, is the main reason she is outcast by society in general, although she doesn't appear to mind. Those two were very close, and believed themselves to be in love for some time - though admittedly many youths believe this.
